šŸ“¹ VAR - what's going on?

Simplest solution?
A time limit.
Eg offside? They have a set number of seconds to check it.
Clear & obvious is still too subjective foul yes/no

Uhm… not is sure… lots has been said about a toe being offside etc… which on first thought seems ridiculous, because is this really an advantage? of course not, BUT therules state you need to be behind or level, so many teams who have well drilled defences with play for an off side trap, its part of the tactic, so why should the defending side be penalised simply because the margin by which it has worked was not detected by the ref or linesman? All VAR is doing there is increasing the accuracy of the decision and ā€˜removing’ the subjective view etc.

Its also mostly impossible to tell if any player gained an advantage from an ā€˜accidental’ hand ball or even if it really was accidental, so again rules have been adjusted to try and remove the ambiguity of subjectivity so that VAR can make a black or white decision.

So I would say again its not VAR or tech that is really the issue, but whether we should be changing the rules to make it usable or not in certain situations.

Personally, I never believed that things evened themselves out over a season - there really was a ā€˜home’ advantage, and managers like Ferguson in effect ā€˜cheated’ by pacing undue pressure on refs before games given that they carried a lot of weight in the match assessment… yet we all laughed at ā€˜Fergie time’ yet how was it that this was notable?

If we are playing in the park or sunday league, its doesn’t matter , but at the highest level, when championships or relegation can come down to goal difference etc and all that goes with that, the more correct decisions are made, the better imho

Agree with most of what you say.

What VAR needs, and what football needs, is a bit of tolerance - tolerance that can now be backed up with evidence.

Offside rule is a top example. I’ve mentioned this before, but the present rule, any part of the player making a player offside, could be improved with VAR. Blessed are not the bignoses nor someone receiving the ball while his back heel is past the last defender who tries to make a spinning turn.

We’ve got to remember why offside was invented. It was a reaction to goalhanging. VAR can sort that out better than a strict line rule, itself a limitation of humans, ever could.

I’m actually a fan of VAR (as it is used by everyone except EPL)
But that was a shocking decision to disallow the Chelsea goal. Way worse than any dubious penalties we could have had this year.
Let alone the Maguire Red Card

In fairness disallowing Girouds’ goal was the right decision

I think there’s little doubt in the minds of neutrals that incorrect VAR judgements won that game for United. Shit decisions.

Unusually.

Polish National TV News.
Sports.
Opened with Blah blah blah DIABOLICAL VAR then ran a full 5 minute slot slagging off VAR officials, some talking head showing a Polish Ref using the monitor etc.

Basically EPL Referees are
becoming an International laughing stock

VAR making headlines again today. This time for not sending off Lo Celso.

EDIT: New clip. Last one was taken for copyright reasons.

Initially the VAR officials said there was nowhere else for him to put his foot.

They have subsequently apologised and admitted that they made a mistake and Lo Celso should have been sent off.

Fuck me.

This might surprise you. It absolutely amazed me, but apparently Mourinho didn’t see the incident at all!!! :open_mouth::open_mouth::open_mouth::open_mouth:

What are the chances of that? He doesn’t miss a millisecond when a decision goes against him, I guess it must just be one of those inexplicable flukes that he wasn’t watching that one.

See the problem with all this is everyone anti-VAR is attacking the wrong thing. It’s not the principle of VAR that is wrong but way in which it is used and as always in football, the way the cunts in charge of it refuse to accept any responsibility when they get it wrong… FFS We should NOT expect VAR to there to get it right 100% of the time, as we see in Rugby or Cricket, it’s never always correct… but it’s significantly reduced the times when decisions have been wrong… problem is with football culture in that it wants controversy when it fucks the other side… same as most fans don’t slag their own cheating diving cunts off, only the ones on the opposition… football fans dont seem to give a fuck about how a positive result was achieved from dodgy Russian linesmen onwards… or insipid negative tactics, or cheating players…

… and whilst that might be ā€˜football fan culture’ it’s not a sporting one. How often do we cheer when the opposition don’t get a penalty which we would have expected had it be one of ours felled in the box?

Personally I want to be fucking entertained, by skill and flair… not cunts falling over and cheating our way to a win.

VAR is in principle about improving fairness… the only reason that many in football hate it is because they never really gave a shit about fairness when they are winning…

It should be a simple 4th official at the ground as with other sports - not a fucking panel of numpties all not willing to make a decision and the ref should use monitor

Prices should be simple— red makes decision. VAR official notifies ref if he thinks there is anything dodgy. Ref then looms at monitor and has chance to change his mind… simple
