Did you mean Russia about figures, or the more general “a few places”?
I have seen the figures for Russia, but would have to find where, as it was a while ago. Other places will be available from places like the UN, WHO and the like.
We could have a long hard debate about this but the fact is what is paid into NI contributions is not enough to cover the extra number of people that are living longer these days.
NI is also used to fund the NHS. There are numerous solutions including :-
increase NI contributions
private pensions for those that can afford it
start delaying when the state pension is paid
make the state pension means tested (controversial/true socialism)
As with everything it is complex and there are many factors at fault. Yes it has been mismanaged but that is not just the fault of this government, it is something that has been going on for years.
Currently life expectancy is 81 year, state pension is paid at 67 (??), so that’s (on average) 24 years of £190 a week to pay per person…how many people are of a pensionable age at the moment. In my mind that is a fuck load of money that has to come from somewhere
Yes multiple governments are at fault, but they all followed the American path and you only have to look at that hell hole to know it’s wrong.
It is indeed a fuck load of money, but easily affordable if dealt with correctly and this needs a long discussion with outlined goals from the start(it’s amazing what can be achieved when you start with certain obligatory goals). This would take time as the mindset in this country has been “self” for far too long. Until we face up to where this leads, we don’t have a whole lot of hope.
Well put.
Has there been much in the press about the “defence” review?
We’re going to be chucking a lot more money at defending our right to murder all over the world.
Imagine the amount of council house’s a single years worth could build.
Murder all over the non white world, or house or own? Tough choice
It’s one of those problems that everyone recognises needs addressing but when the rubber hits the road, people don’t want to do anything about it particularly if it affects them
As for the 75 yr old fireman, that obviously won’t be the case. Part of the problem is that us gen x types expected to be in the same / similar career for life. Because of the pace of change, Today’s nippers are expected to have many jobs in many different industries, so maybe career changing for them won’t be so daunting.
So for those who say we should leave well alone, how are you going to fund it? And don’t say tax google, that money’s been spent twenty times over if we ever get it
The proposals would leave us with the highest retirement age in the world. How does the rest of the world manage to pitch lower than that?
Simple fact is that it is a political choice. Just raising corporation tax to a reasonable level would help shitloads, as would taking profit motive out of key industries, or at least funnelling that profit into the exchequer.
I just don’t understand how you can sit there and treat an abhorrent policy as an inevitability. It’s fucking shit policy, and if I didn’t know better, I’d say they’re trying to lose an election on purpose. Maybe Boris isn’t as anti-EU as he makes out.
Shittiest pension in Europe too. It’s all part of the work till you die policy. Soon to be complimented by the when you’re dead we’ll have your house policy. Cunts.
Other countries aren’t coping, The pension issue is a world wide one- everyone is kicking can down the road, because governments are only interested in getting re-elected and therefore fucking about with something that is needed but will not be welcome is never high on the agenda. It’s the same reason why the NHS is in such a muddle, because every govt is too terrified to take the necessary steps to reform it. Christ, they were talking about the need to reform that 30years ago when I was studying
Should have given them British citizenship day one. Would have done absolutely no harm if we’d ended up staying in. Would also have put the EU on the back-foot morally.
Instead, they have a shitty “settled” status, were used as potential bargaining chips and have no certainty whatsoever.
You can be for Brexit yet highly critical of the implementation. That is where I stand.
