I can see Russia leasing out areas of the RFE to exploit the natural resources given that they can’t pay enough money to get their own to do it.

It’s probably why China isn’t directly opposing Russia over Ukraine- Like good capitalists they’re probably waiting for Russia to be so short of cash that they’ll be able to drive a good deal in their favour.

It hadn’t occurred to me before but now someone’s said it, it obviously makes perfect sense. The Ukrainian government has refused to let the army withdraw from Donbass precisely because they can use the Donbass population and infrastructure as shields. Once the pro-Russian regions are taken, the dynamic changes completely, the Ukrainian forces won’t be hiding behind people they consider to be outsiders anymore they’ll be hiding behind their own people and if Ukraine doesn’t surrender or Russia doesn’t stop there, their problems will be compounded, since the Russians will surely start acting with even less restraint.
