šŸ¦‡ The sci-fi, fantasy and capeshit thread

Why is it that you can have a sex-flipped Ghostbusters but my idea Gash Gordon vs Minge the Merciless is rejected by Hollywood?

Yep.
The Peripheral finished S1 by frying my brain, which in SciFi show is rare.
Very good, very unusual

I’ve reached the end of S1 of Manifest - Netflix
It is a slow burner drama almost soap so can see why it isnt for everyone.
There is an early Lost vibe to it but it stays more grounded in real New York while answers are searched for as to how a plane could disappear for 5 years then land and nobody on board knew the time had lapsed.
It deals with the implications of that on families, adds a conspiracy and something else.
While not gripping, it is watchable and is now a story I want to ā€œreadā€ to the end
In the world of streaming and no normal TV it’s a good filler when nothing else is around.
I’m enjoying it

Big news in the world of DC this past couple of weeks. James Gunn has been given the keys to the kingdom, and one of the first things he wants to do is tear the current universe down and start anew.

I don’t blame him. Some of the films have been good but overall, DC’s attempts to get a universe on screen have not been great.

In a sense, it’s something of a shame that some people who fit the roles really well are getting shipped. However, I’m amazed that they had those characters and did so poorly, especially as it had all already been done.

DC’s animated universe was superb, pitched to both kids and the parents who’d watch along with them. The beginning of the Superman cartoon is the best origin the character has got, placing Braniac at the centre of Krypton’s destruction and setting up stories for later on.

I think one of the biggest problems with the DC movies is that many of the directors involved really haven’t wanted to engage with the source material, like it’s a bit dirty, so they try to ground it as much as possible in reality.

I can remember a time when Burton’s Batman was seen as the serious one. Those movies are joyfully silly and comic book by comparison but they still had their own internal integrity that the Kilmer and Clooney films did.

There is a balance to get right. I don’t think Gunn can have the universe he wants with the universe that has been established. I don’t think they’ll be wiped out. Fully expecting the Flash movie to do all sorts of multiversal shit that retains some link while simultaneously severing it properly.

It’s been fun reading the rage of The Witcher fans after Cavill quit so he could come back as Superman and then got dumped, only to then get the Warhammer gig.

Thing is DC Movies are just not MCU Movies. And then they cast the wrong Flash (both from a not being from the TV version and being a headcase.

I’m all in favour of a Universe, but, the Batman Comics aren’t dark & intense so why did they feel the need to extend the Movie darkness in each new release. They are great films but is such a dark place even possible to meld into a Universe? Surely the Sun has to shine somewhere other than (the probably fired) Wonder Woman’s world

Have you seen the new Suicide Squad?

That’ll be the tone theyre going for and that is very much like a Marvel film. Better in a lot of ways.

It’s on the list. But means I have to watch the 1st one as well

Yes Suicide Squad was not shit.
1st Film was typical ā€œDarkā€ - FFS DCU stop it, they do know there is a thing called the Sun right?
2nd was better more humour, but still not close to any of the MCU classics.
More light, less seriousness then I see they have a plan.
But atm with MCU hitting a wall as well could be strange days for Superhero Franchises

Finally watching Andor. Only three episodes in but I don’t mind the slow start, especially as the show is so visual

You can’t tablet watch this and expect to keep up with what’s going on.

I also love the use of a British cast throughout. Heard the first ever Scouse accent in Star Wars.

They get everywhere.

(Dey do dho, don’t dey do)

Next level shit for the franchise.
Glad you’re catching up lots of SM posts that it has changed the game

It is, and it accidentally (or not) stumbles onto a certain formula.

Twelve episode season in name. Basically four Star Wars movies in execution.

Happened loads of times already in comic book form and not just with DC/MCU either.

I say this as someone who thoroughly enjoyed Aliens vs Predator vs Terminator.

JUNG_E is almost shit, with possibly the world’s worst overacting by
Oh wait.
Actually, there is a story in there, and not what the introduction really set up.
So yeah, get past the oh wait overacting and it’s not shit.
Netflix

My God that was powerful

Wakanda Forever.
Marvelous

That all sounds very fandom based.
MCU allowed non fans to enjoy the shows.
I give it a Hmmm

The Ark.
Long awaited from the Stargate stable.
Hmm.
It starts with a cataclysmic event on an Ark heading into space.
Everything is going wrong and so much happens and then they add in human drama and stresses and even more.
Look Ep1 is a mess. Action packed but too much drama but too much.

Hopefully the actual premise will overcome the fit everything into one episode madness because the concept is really good.

I’ll keep watching.
For a bit

SyFy USA or VPN streaming atm
