šŸ¦‡ The sci-fi, fantasy and capeshit thread

IF you watched Westworld to the end you will know it asked some questions about Reality.
The Peripheral (from the same team) appears to be taking this further.
The core material is a William Gibson book so the DNA is there.
Without Spoilers the show mixes genres VERY well. There is time jumping but much easier to follow than Westworld.
There is Redneck backwoods 'Murica.
There is a hint of the original Matrix, of Read Player One.
I really have no idea what is going on, but after 3 episodes I’m getting a few theories.
Completely hooked on it.

She-Hulk doesn’t really question reality. It just breaks the fourth wall and takes the piss out of the MCU in the process. I’m always moaning about having seen it all before. I’ve seen something like this before in Gremlins 2. That was a skit, not a finale. I think it’s kinda genius.

I am planning on having a look at Westworld. Is it done yet?

Westworld is done but may not be.
Not in the usual cliffhanger way.
It starts as a very good remake of the film but there is ā€œsomething moreā€ it meanders a bit esp in S3 but a couple of episodes into S4 it comes together very well. The main issue most had is that it time jumps the story without context. Once you work that out it is easy to follow.
I think The Periperal has a great story and the time jumps are well telegraphed and in context.
Both worth the effort

Oh

But imho s4 ended it ā€œOKā€ - Sure it could have wrapped it up properly but context wise I’m ok with that being the end

And they are right about S2 &3 until you watch s4

We do not recognise the mighty Red Dwarf enough on this site.

It really is. I watched this with my mum last week and she knows very little about Red Dwarf, but loved the epirsode immediately.

When you think about all the time on money spent on complicated CGI these days and can see what was achieved with reverse footage and a bit of purposeful editing, Backwards does look especially forward-looking.

I really love Queeg, but I have to admit I’m a bit torn between that and Backwards. I think I’ll always put Queeg first.

Because we are talking wheeze of the week, jape of the century, etc.

Back To Reality - great episode which introduced Dwayne Dibbley

Plus it was years ahead of Chris Nolan, Tenet seems to have been heavily influenced by that episode.

I liked the episode with the despair squid, there were a couple of good time travel episodes that were cleverly done too.

I do have a soft spot for the whole of S1

For years you could watch every series but that one. A bit like Blackadder.

Red Dwarf made me think of the radio show of Hitchhikers guide to the Galaxy & the wonderful Peter Jones

And, from the book, The Robots invading Earth that created Cricket & the Rain God

Mrs C_S and YoungAdults rave about Hitchhikers

  • never got it myself, but that’s probably because everyone at 6th form back in the day raved about it

Too many other things on the tellybox list now to even be bothered to try. The recent-ish film didn’t float my boat either.

Film was shit.
Read the books.

Been getting into All Tomorrows, which you certainly can’t accuse of lacking scope or imagination. It’s a fake history that covers all of humanity’s future.

It’s a bumpy ride. Eight billion killed in the Mars / Earth / War. No faster than light travel. Humanity first modifies itself to be better adapted to space travel, then seeds itself by sending automated ships out to far flung places and growing new humans when they get there.

We then get twatted by an alien race that keeps us about and genetically modified us into a load of sub species. The rest of the book is about the fate of what remains of humanity.

Not a novel. Totally a fake history, except it focuses on the future. Little bit mind-blowing.

Chloe Grace Mortez may just be the hottest new name on the block

The Peripheral is very very good
