Surprised no-one has mentioned Peacemaker yet. Spin-off from The Suicide Squad. Who knew? John Cena can actually carry a show. James Gunn (Guardians of the Galaxy, The Suicide Squad) did the writing and directing duties on the first episode, which Iāve seen and enjoyed a lot.
As good as any of the Marvel series, probably better in my view. I prefer it when shows say fuck. And this one does. A lot.
So after writing the last post I kinda binged on all the Peacemaker that is available and have some further thoughts. In terms of tone, it very much follows The Suicide Squad and also reminds me a bit of The Boys. For something titled after the eponymous āheroā, itās also an excellent ensemble piece. Indeed, the opening credit crawl basically features all of them.
I love Vigilante in particular.
Vigilante: Deep sigh Do you think I feel good, when after some dude does some atrocious act, that I have to kill them?
Peacemaker: Shrugs I donāt know.
Vigilante: When I find out someone murdered an innocent person, or sold somebody heroin, or did some graffiti, and I kill that person with my bare hands their eyeballs⦠POPPING out of their SKULLS. You think THAT gives me pleasure?
Peacemaker: Exasperated sigh Noā¦
Vigilante: Well it does. Laughs
Great show. Two butterfly wings up.
Boba Fett clearly saved everything to the end.
Glad I stayed with it.
Sergio Leone would have been proudā¦
I watched Birds of Prey last night. I like Harley Quinn a lot - but this movie really is mediocrity defined. Didnāt offend me, but itās not going to live long in the memory.
I have finally finished Babylon 5
@pap nailed it in his summary. S1 was slow, 2-4 got better & better S5 left opportunities for spin offs that never happened.
Perhaps one reason why it is so loved is that they took the time to end the show properly. 3+ episodes of Goodbyes (got a bit tedious) but unusual for a show to end properly
It still has some of the greatest episodes of sci-fi ever.
I really like The Inquisitor, when Sheridan and DeāLenn get interviewed by (ahem) Sebastian.
Right, so Iāve finished Peacemaker. This is of course, the supporting character from The Suicide Squad given a HBO Max series, which means many wonāt have seen it yet. James Gunn of Guardians fame wrote all eight episodes and directed five.
John Cenaās Peacemaker, whose tagline is āIād do anything for peace. Iād kill every man, woman and child to get itā, is not an immediately sympathetic character. Heās sexist, homophobic and racist. But heās trying to be better, and is much better than what he has come from. His old man, played by Robert Patrick of Terminator 2 fame, is a proper old racist KKK cunt of the old style.
Itās perfect then, that Peacemaker is corralled, on point of death, into a diverse group of agents working for Amanda Waller, the give-no-fucks orchestrator of the off-book chaos in the Suicide Squad films.
John Cena is a gamble paid off; apparently Gunn saw more potential in the former wrestler after directing him in The Suicide Squad. The ensemble is tight, full of natural and very much not woke conflict.
Iāve enjoyed all of the Marvel TV stuff, but I enjoyed The Boys more than that and Iāve enjoyed Peacemaker more than that. If you havenāt seen The Suicide Squad yet, I envy you because you have both that and a great TV show to encounter.
Space Force Netflix is back.
In a way that is a surprise. S1 was tedious and nearly funny.
Untilā¦
Steve Carroll wore a Spacesuit.
That was the Stargate SG1 suit. Then geeks got on board.
Until then it had been a parody of Trumpian then something happened.
S2 just dropped. Following from an order to attack the Chinese Moonbase with a spanner
Ep 1 starts with the āhearigā into that ādebacleā
It is epically bad.
And funnier
Enjoying, John Malkovich finally coming good
Ep3.
Cliched
Non woke
Chinese delegation visit.
Currently mopping vodka off the laptop.
So perfectly awfully
Tbh it isnt perfect. It just needs Frank Drebin as the General but Steve Carroll does a close impersonation
Oh hello.
Raised by Wolves S2 has landed
Raised by Wolves is a Ridley Scott creation. S1 was incredibly difficult to ābingeā as it was so completely different from anything else that exists in the modern Sci Fi metaverse. Like the haunting theme music, it was just a bit āoffā.
Thing was I stuck with it and S1 ended and I really didnāt expect an S2, the ending was āoffā even disconcerting.
And then S2 landed, so perhaps a gentle spoiler or two of the context of the show.
Earth is at War, laid waste by a Religious conflict between believers in Sol and Atheists. Robots are common place.
A ship is sent to somewhere or other with 2 Androids, 1 a service model, 1 a "War Machine, both reprogrammed to raise human children from Embryos IF they get to the planet and IF it can support life
An Ark of believers also appear in S1. To this point the show is simply āoffā but I stuck with it.
S2 goes a bit further and ā¦
Suddenly I am seeing Ridley Scottās mind. This is āoffā in the way that Prometheus was āoffā for anyone other than an Alien geek. Now I see that this show is the whole Alien Universe - but without Aliens, it is Ridley waking up and seeing another āUniverseā that (a small part of) Alien could address. The Robots occasionally bear resemblances to those in Alien & Prometheus, but you donāt need to be a geek to pick up a ābigger themeā.
This is some proper top level shit. This might even be something special. But fvck me, although it is still a tough watch. I am now totally addicted.
I really recommend it (I think it is on Sky Atlantic in UK as it was my Daughter who put me on to it in S1)
Just watch it
Oh, when I say haunting theme music
The Adam Project - Netflix is enjoyable Time Travel nonsense
7/10
Would have been higher but Ryan Reynolds plays Ryan the lad who rocked up to Karaoke night in the sandpit
Oh.
Raised by Wolves gets deep into serious deep shit
9/10
Nope, 4/10, just because it totally ignores time travel lore
I did say it was nonsense
Right now I like nonsense
On the subject of nonsense.
Iāve been bombarded for a year or so about Moonfall.
Sorry, that is simply THE most stupid concept ever. It will be complete shit.
Anyway, my Provider has it and.
It wasnāt completely shit. That annoys me. I want to hate it so much for being a shit concept let alone an idea.
Bollox.
It wasnāt shit
Nope, it really is that bad, the only saving grace is Samwell Tarley
