So so good. I’ve been super into all things Expanse recently, even going into some of the novellas.

Most other sci-fi wants you not to think. Great example. Star Trek ships dropping out of warp (inertial dampers, kids!) on a dime versus this, which is what happens when you really come to a sudden stop in space…

Also love that ā€œright way upā€ is basically standing above the source of thrust.

Mrs P_F watched some of 1st series but lost interest.
She tuned in yesterday and I had to go e an overview why we all rave about it.
My best description was that it has become so ā€œBIGā€
There has been so much going on this season even without the Stargate.
And yet that huge Tapestry is held together by such simple yet detailed stuff in each story arc.
Tiny details that come back, like the hypoxia pen or whatever…
Superb

My missus lost interest at some point too and I really don’t understand why. What I really loved about the opening five or six episodes of that show is that the story really doesn’t allow you to get comfy.

Holden and gang are on four different ships in the first six episodes. ChrisJen is initially portrayed as a torturer. Even in that very first episode, seeds were planted for what happened this year. Episode 1, ChrisJen is worried about Martian tech being sold off, and it becomes a pivotal plot point later on.

But you’re right. Every year it gets bigger and usually climaxes with something huge.

  • S2 - Major shit going down on Venus
  • S3 - Ring Gates and Ring Worlds open up
  • S4 - First trip to extra solar planet. Marcos Inaros introduced.

Stayed up late to watch this week’s episode of The Expanse. Character wise, it’s a shift back to Amos, Clarissa - and the folks on Luna. It’s also the biggest Naomi episode yet in terms of Dominique Tipper’s performance.

Much of the episode is her, on her own, trying to suss out how she can stop a bomb-rigged ship from killing anyone that might come to rescue her.

It’s one hell of a performance. Battered and burnt from last week’s space walk, the episode captures the growing tension and frustration of her situation. It also does something that books can’t easily do without boring the shit out of everybody, which is ambient sound.

A book might tell you that someone can hear a hum as they enter a room, but your mind will soon wantder to other things that are happening. That hum is gone from your mind pretty quickly unless the author keeps hammering it home.

Audio does that effortlessly, and you can’t ignore it.

Big episode for Drummer too. No prizes for guessing what her conflict is. Cara Gee, the woman who plays here, couldn’t be more bubbly and sweet. Drummer is a fucking rattlesnake.

Love stuff like this.

I must say, I find this Godzilla vs Kong trailer a bit flimsy.

It’s almost as if they’re contriving a way to get two famous monsters to fight each other.

The slam-dunk is poorly judged, imo.

Been getting back into Lord of the Rings, mostly on audiobook. Unabridged versions, init. The worst thing about the audiobooks is all the fucking Elvish singing. It goes on forever.

That said, wonderful universe of mythology to revisit.

Yeah ā€˜Jailhouse Orc’ goes on for ages.

I just loved the stuff Tolkien decided was important.

There’s a whole fucking intro chapter called ā€œConcerning pipe-weedā€

Indeed - The Road Goes On Forever

I do wonder how that series will be regarded in say a century or two.

Shame I’m a dwarf, and not an elf.

I haven’t done an Expanse review this week, and it has been out for a day. There are a lot of times when adaptation goes badly, but one of the things that consistently impresses me about the Expanse is how much the TV improvisation works.

This season has been full of improvisations, something that has given me great joy when watching the monotone YouTube cunts that make a living out of having read a few books.

Perhaps the character that personifies the quality of the adaptation is Drummer. Book readers first met her this season in the TV show, but she was introduced way back in season two.

She shouldn’t work. She is essentially a composite of around three or four other characters, condensed into one for TV. And yet, she is one of the best characters in the show, and she’s recurring at best.

Amazing performance from Cara Gee, in person seemingly sweet and lovely, on-screen a total badass. Great episode for her tonight, and once again, Dominique Tipper is nailing Naomi’s present arc.

It is nearly 70 yrs old and has held up well so far.

Nowhere in the books does it describe the elves as having pointed ears. This is an invention of Peter Jackson.
