Same story with a lot of films. How many big movies have been killed by re-shoots?
Thereās definitely a place for studio interference. Star Wars would not be the phenomenon it is today if George Lucasā original cut had been the theatrical release.
But DC seem to have a particular lack of self-confidence with their movies which makes me wonder if they even understand their own universe. WW is a complete case in point. One of the big three in DC, it has taken forever to get her on-screen and they donāt seem to have much of a clue to do with her once sheās there.
The really sad thing is that there are fucking brilliant stories already on the small screen that could be adapted easily in this day and age. The run of the Justice League and Justice League Unlimited series would be fucking amaing, even if they only nicked bits of it.
Another episode of The Expanse is in the noggin. The show has always been able to arrest my attention, but this season has been something else.
The book this is based on takes place over a very short period of time, say two weeks, so it is perhaps not surprising that each instalment is just ratcheting up tension from the last.
I wasnāt convinced by Marco Inaros when he was an airlock candidate. Didnāt rate him as an antagonist. How wrong I was. The bloke is a narcissistic cunt that manipulates everyone around him into accepting his warped view of reality.
The Amos plot is a goodāun, with him and Peaches trying to escape from ten floors underground. Itās a bit like a mini-disaster movie in one episode. My only complaint is that Amos did not say āsee ya Tiny!ā at the end. One more time would have been fun.
When I watched the first couple of seasons I said it was the best sci-fi on TV. Itās still that, but itās also a grand space epic now.
A much less controversial Sunday afternoon cape shit movie is Shazam.
Doesnāt have any pretence to keep up & takes the piss out of itself.
Ticks all the diversity boxes and has some daft moments
Much better effort from DC Universe
Staying up late to watch The Expanse as soon as it drops at midnight tonight. Iām also a good way through the books, so am seeing some major differences.
I actually think the show has handled the introduction of the latest big bad a lot better than the books do. If you stay on the main novel series, the first you really see of him is book five.
The show introduced him last season, made his life part of a major sub-plot, in which his life or death was voted on. Those characters that voted for him to live are now having an especially hard time and are also particularly motivated.
Bit of a slower one this week on The Expanse, dealing with the aftermath of the attacks on Earth. Amos and Peaches are currently trekking their way out of the asteroid wasteland toward Baltimore. We get to catch up with events on the Pella, and ChrisJen is back this episode, meeting the new Secretary General of the UN.
The system has changed massively this season, so itās nice to see an episode where people actually reflect on that. Earth will never be the same again. Marcoās actions will probably result in a decade of Belter malnourishment, at least.
Big things are happening, so itās nice to have at least one episode pondering the consequences.
The weekly Expanse review, now with added āhow faithful was this to the books?ā.
Great episode, once again focusing on the conflicts on the Pella, Marcos Inarosā flagship of the Free Navy. I love the guy who plays Marco, who really, is just the ultimate fucking narcissist, getting everyone else to do the dirty and hard work. There have been bigger cunts in sci-fi, but most of those have fucking Death Stars and whatnot.
Those fighting against him realised that he couldnāt possibly have afforded to buy his Martian fleet with any sort of cash, so they speculate that the protomolecule must be the payment.
Thw show has done so much justice to this part of the book. Itās messy, murky and puts our characters, Naomi especially, in some fucking shit situations. The performances are top notch, much of the dialogue is lifted straight off the page and that finale was better than the Princess Leia moment in Last Jedi
Actually watched it from the start and I think Iāve seen the lot, mini-series, the series, the one-offs and the spin-off.
Thought the second season was a bit ropey. Interesting ideas, but most of them filmed in a forest, unfortunately. After spending several seasons of watching SG-1 mostly use Stargates to dick about in British Columbia, I notice it when others pull the same trick.
Some amazing performances, particularly since the likes of Grace Park and Tricia Helfer were not overburdened with acting chops when it started filming.
It is an excellent re-imagining of what was a pretty family-oriented original. It has explored themes that no other show touched before or since.
