šŸ¦‡ The sci-fi, fantasy and capeshit thread

Same story with a lot of films. How many big movies have been killed by re-shoots?

There’s definitely a place for studio interference. Star Wars would not be the phenomenon it is today if George Lucas’ original cut had been the theatrical release.

But DC seem to have a particular lack of self-confidence with their movies which makes me wonder if they even understand their own universe. WW is a complete case in point. One of the big three in DC, it has taken forever to get her on-screen and they don’t seem to have much of a clue to do with her once she’s there.

The really sad thing is that there are fucking brilliant stories already on the small screen that could be adapted easily in this day and age. The run of the Justice League and Justice League Unlimited series would be fucking amaing, even if they only nicked bits of it.

Another episode of The Expanse is in the noggin. The show has always been able to arrest my attention, but this season has been something else.

The book this is based on takes place over a very short period of time, say two weeks, so it is perhaps not surprising that each instalment is just ratcheting up tension from the last.

I wasn’t convinced by Marco Inaros when he was an airlock candidate. Didn’t rate him as an antagonist. How wrong I was. The bloke is a narcissistic cunt that manipulates everyone around him into accepting his warped view of reality.

The Amos plot is a good’un, with him and Peaches trying to escape from ten floors underground. It’s a bit like a mini-disaster movie in one episode. My only complaint is that Amos did not say ā€œsee ya Tiny!ā€ at the end. One more time would have been fun.

When I watched the first couple of seasons I said it was the best sci-fi on TV. It’s still that, but it’s also a grand space epic now.

ā€œWhat do you want to do now Captain?ā€
ā€œFight them until we can’tā€

BSG is the fracking bee’s fracking knees…

A much less controversial Sunday afternoon cape shit movie is Shazam.
Doesn’t have any pretence to keep up & takes the piss out of itself.
Ticks all the diversity boxes and has some daft moments
Much better effort from DC Universe

It really is. Not sure they cared about it that much, because it was lower budget and not one of their big properties.

Since Nolan was involved, it’s their big properties they care about and the big properties they fuck up most.

If you want another example, just check out Aquaman. It’s not a great film, but it’s a much better film than most of their other films.

Aquaman is great
But of all the Superhero movies that last ā€œmomentā€ ā€œI invited a friendā€ had me spraying vodka

This is a very amusing video.

Spoilers for Wonder Woman 1984.

Staying up late to watch The Expanse as soon as it drops at midnight tonight. I’m also a good way through the books, so am seeing some major differences.

I actually think the show has handled the introduction of the latest big bad a lot better than the books do. If you stay on the main novel series, the first you really see of him is book five.

The show introduced him last season, made his life part of a major sub-plot, in which his life or death was voted on. Those characters that voted for him to live are now having an especially hard time and are also particularly motivated.

It’s a smart change.

Is it possible to fall in love with a fictional representation of an alternative, nay, historical record of mankind.

If so I fracking love Battlestar Galactica 200?

And Glen A Larson had input into it so it can’t be all that bad… can it…

And don’t get me started on Lucy Lawless…:heart::heart:

All this has happened before and will happen again.

So say we all.

Bit of a slower one this week on The Expanse, dealing with the aftermath of the attacks on Earth. Amos and Peaches are currently trekking their way out of the asteroid wasteland toward Baltimore. We get to catch up with events on the Pella, and ChrisJen is back this episode, meeting the new Secretary General of the UN.

The system has changed massively this season, so it’s nice to see an episode where people actually reflect on that. Earth will never be the same again. Marco’s actions will probably result in a decade of Belter malnourishment, at least.

Big things are happening, so it’s nice to have at least one episode pondering the consequences.

The weekly Expanse review, now with added ā€œhow faithful was this to the books?ā€.

Great episode, once again focusing on the conflicts on the Pella, Marcos Inaros’ flagship of the Free Navy. I love the guy who plays Marco, who really, is just the ultimate fucking narcissist, getting everyone else to do the dirty and hard work. There have been bigger cunts in sci-fi, but most of those have fucking Death Stars and whatnot.

Those fighting against him realised that he couldn’t possibly have afforded to buy his Martian fleet with any sort of cash, so they speculate that the protomolecule must be the payment.

Thw show has done so much justice to this part of the book. It’s messy, murky and puts our characters, Naomi especially, in some fucking shit situations. The performances are top notch, much of the dialogue is lifted straight off the page and that finale was better than the Princess Leia moment in Last Jedi

Frack the Expanse, get on board with BSG…

Am episodes behind because of Fam Covid etc and not binge-watching.

Any chance you could do that text hidey-thing you do elsewhere when doing updates?

Asking for a friend, like…:+1:

Actually watched it from the start and I think I’ve seen the lot, mini-series, the series, the one-offs and the spin-off.

Thought the second season was a bit ropey. Interesting ideas, but most of them filmed in a forest, unfortunately. After spending several seasons of watching SG-1 mostly use Stargates to dick about in British Columbia, I notice it when others pull the same trick.

Some amazing performances, particularly since the likes of Grace Park and Tricia Helfer were not overburdened with acting chops when it started filming.

It is an excellent re-imagining of what was a pretty family-oriented original. It has explored themes that no other show touched before or since.

But I’ve seen it

No. Catch up. This is on general release. These are not spoilers.

If I do it for you I’ll have to blur out everything past 1997 for @Barry-Sanchez.

Is that a threat or a promise  ?

Tbf- we’ve been lax on catching up with The Expanse - trying to herd the whole Fam C_S in the same room. Easy for Star Trek less so otherwise.

I might even read all the books before that happens

Yeah, I’m starting to see why you’re weeks behind on everything.

I gave up enforced family fun years ago. We actually have more fun and I get to watch shit they don’t like.
