I guess because he keeps slagging their players off in public so if they can’t afford to go buy better players, they might as well find a manager who can either coach them to improve what they’ve already got or blow smoke up their arses rather than cripple their confidence.

That’s fair enough, but the Ukraine invasion happened 8 months after he was appointed at Bompey. You could imagine them hiring him on the basis “get us promoted and we’ll strengthen the squad for the PL,” then that not happening. Whatever the reasons for it not happening, it’s understandable that he might feel the squad he’s wound up with aren’t good enough to compete in the league.
