Higgins was tried and acquitted in a court of law in 1991. Was Bates supposed to realise that was just corruption or incompetence, and that whatever evidence or allegations he’d been presented with trumped that verdict?

From my perspective, yes they would.
My eldest brother abused my youngest sister for years, and even I was not strong enough to do something about it years later (I was very young at the time of the abuse, and from age 9 was at boarding school).
I would not want to castigate any other members of the family years, even decades, later, for allowing this to have happened.

I am gutted to hear that but you were a kid and none of that was your fault.

Kids don’t know what the fuck is going on, so are not the best judges of right and wrong, which is how the abuse happens in the first place.

I do think it’s different when grown adults in positions of responsibility turn a blind eye.
