Bank holidays … they’re a hoot
I’ve said loads of time before that polls are shit. Well according to this shit poll from this shit paper, May has lost half her lead.
A Survation poll for The Mail on Sunday put the Conservatives on 40 per cent, followed by Labour on 29 per cent and the Lib Dems and Ukip level on 11 per cent.
It means Mrs May’s lead over Jeremy Corbyn has nearly halved in four days: a poll immediately after she called the Election gave the Tories a 21-point advantage.
The Conservative slump follows the threat to drop existing pledges not to increase tax and to guarantee a minimum 2.5 per cent annual rise in pensions.
The backlash was further fuelled by Mrs May’s surprise announcement that she will not abandon the Party’s controversial promise to spend 0.7 per cent of national income on overseas aid. The Mail on Sunday poll is the only one to have been conducted after all three stories broke, and shows voters are less likely to vote Tory as a result.
The Prime Minister spurned three opportunities yesterday to contradict claims that she will drop David Cameron’s 2015 Election pledge not to raise income tax, national insurance or VAT until 2020.
Spoken like a true contractor.
You do realise that’s almost an entire week off. Anyone on a salary will love that.
I know, hence why I called it a vote winner?
As an aside though, I can see businesses refusing to pay for them - that’s a lot of money lost for businesses.
I think you’re being a little naive here Pap. There’s a couple of funny things going on in this election.
The Conservatives are going to be going along the lines that ‘our lead is being cut’ to ensure that people vote and make sure Corbyn doesn’t get votes.
Add to that the Labour party will be doing the same as a ‘Look at the lead May has got, we cannot let her have a bigger mandate’ to ensure everyone goes out and votes.
This is why we’ve seen such contrasting polls in the Mirror and the Mail this morning.
I didn’t know if you being sarcastic.
(I read the post immediately afterward)
As it goes, the campaigning went pretty well. Glorious day. Lots of people out enjoying the sunshine. Got to hang around with my MP Stephen Twigg, the chappie who ended Portillo’s Parliamentary existence way back in 1997. He sits on the other side of the party ideologically, but I think he realises which constituency he represents. He’s voted with Corbyn on pretty much every issue.
Fantastic politician, just in terms of how he carries himself.
My favourite call was to a nice house which had a sign on the door saying “Welcome to our house. Now piss off”. The door was opened by a nice young blonde lady. I just looked at her, chuckled and said “I like your sign”.
I asked pretty much everyone I canvassed how they voted in the referendum, with spiel ready for either answer. The Leavers got “I voted Leave too. A third of Labour voters did, and Corbyn’s committed to Brexit”. The Remainers got “I voted Leave, but I didn’t vote for this Leave”
Can we put a poll up to see where we are going?
We have 363 members
put a poll up with all the possible parties and lets see where we go .
Apparently, Tory MPs have a nickname for Theresa May.
They call her “mummy”.
Bloody hell. someone got out of bed on the wrong side. I dont need a website to tell me how to vote but I do need more information as to how to vote tactically as I had no idea how the voting went here in the last couple of elections other than who one. If I hadnt used this site I would have had to Google the last election results, so one way or another I needed more info. This saved me time. I really dont see why you are getting so upset. This is a cast iron Tory seat so it makes little difference anyway, but, for the first time I have been thinking of voting tactically rather than for my usual Party. It is not helpful if you decide it isnt any good for you. It was helpful for me because I thought the Lib Dems were well out of the picture and apparently they are not. For an old hippy you really need to relearn how to chill mate.
That is all very well Pap but it isnt going to cut the waiting lines in the NHS (if anything it will increase them) or do anything to help the economy. He needs to go for the jugular and do something about those on huge incomes. Its no good having more time off if you cant afford to do anything with those days off.
Labour have pledged to end private involvement in the NHS. It’s a separate issue which they’ve addressed at length in opposition. If the NHS is important to people, they’ll know Labour is the party to vote for.
Onto Bank Holidays. I don’t even know if you’re right on its effect on the NHS. I’ve not looked at statistics. However, in and of itself, it is excellent policy. Most workers will be able to fenagle another week out of the year with careful annual leave.
In a time when the Union has increasingly been under threat from separatist elements, this recognises our diversity and it’ll be nice for us all to get three days off because of other countries.
It’s also a non-creepy way to celebrate a bit of national pride, and might turn the heads of people who’ve been claiming England needed to celebrate St George’s Day. From that unpatriotic Corbyn fella, no less
Can only speak from personal experience on this. As bank holidays occur before or after the weekend, it leaves some departments with reduced staff for 3 or 4 days, departments that are essential for discharging patients or getting important scans done or performing minor daycase surgeries to name a few examples. The Easter bank holiday is the worst culprit. To be perfectly honest I’d prefer if bank holiday’s were scrapped all together, and allow people to take those days as annual leave when they choose.
I would prefer my ‘bank’ holidays to be added to my anual leave to take when I want and not when nearly every other person is off too.
I am a dyed in the wool Lib Dem but I am one of those who still feels aggreived at what Clegg did in the coalition and I am yet to be whelmed by Tim Fallon. This time I plan to vote tactically and thanks to niki’s very helful website, despite UKIP coming second in 2015 it appears my choice lies between Labour and the Lib Dems. From what I have heard from Corbyn so far, I cant argue with. I have never voted Labour but perhaps this is the year? I actually warm to Corbyn. Unlike May, he clearly has a political conscience which is what I want in a politician. He is also nothing like Blair, which can only be a good thing. Not too fussed about the Bank Holidays (and if people we so bothered about St George’s Day why not just take a day’s leave and go and get bladdered in the local if it means that much to you) but I am with him on many other issues so far. Looking forward to having a look at what Fallon’s got to say and how he now handles the whole Brexit thing. I guess I am now a “floating voter” (well apart from there being not a snowflake in hell’s chance of me voting either Tory or UKIP) so came and get me guys!!!
Someone highlighted an issue with the website so could be worth checking out last election results to make sure it’s not sending you in the wrong direction.
I think that ten pound an hour minimum living wage is going to sway a lot of voters.
Perhaps not people paying a lot of other people the current minimum wage. As an electoral calculation, it’s pretty good and shouldn’t actually cost too much over the long term. For starters. much of that cost is going to be borne by employers, which they’ll bear anyway when wages go up.
Nice. The BBC are doing a debate, with or without Theresa.
The most powerful organ in the British media. Can she still keep swerving this potential car crash?
I can’t get my head around this pap. She clearly is no stranger to full on debates and by ducking out she makes it look like she is afraid. If she wants to be seen as a strong leader and a safe pair of hands she should be saying “bring it on!” surely?
