Saints set to splash £50million on two new stars

Show/hide article…

Mauricio Pellegrino believes it could be a good week for Saints as they try and tie up a £50m double swoop for Quincy Promes and Guido Carrillo.

The club have already been boosted by a spirited draw at Tottenham, and could get a significant lift if Les Reed can deliver two new faces in the coming days.

Pacy Dutch winger Promes could obliterate the club’s transfer record if he arrives from Spartak Moscow for a fee of around £30m, while big Argentinian striker Carrillo is a potential £20m transfer from Monaco.

“Hopefully next week will be a good week for us,” said Pellegrino.

“In the market anything can change in one second. It’s like football.

“Negotiation is about two sides and you have limitations to arrive at a point and then you need the other part to do the job.”

The result against Spurs has eased the pressure on Pellegrino, who had joked being a manager is like sitting in an electric chair.

“We use it as a joke,” he smiled.

“They ask if I am worried about my job but the manager is the easier employee to lose, because we depend on results. We use this as a joke.

“It’s really difficult to be seated in the same chair a lot of time.”

As if to prove it, Watford sacked Marco Silva, who had been a potential for the Saints job before going to Vicarage Road.

“I have to respect the decision because I don’t know what happened in this club,” said Pellegrino.

“The biggest risk in football is to work in football.

“If the sense of everything that this is a game but the problem is we hear budgets, and money, and you will buy players, and we think it’s a match.

“The sense of everything this is a game. If you don’t want to lose don’t play the game.

“I am not afraid to lose my job to be honest because it’s part of our life.

“I play football from ten-years-old and when you win you have to win again, when you draw you have to win, when you lose you have to win. The question is always the same.

“I play for teams and was very lucky because I was champion a lot of years, but even when you are the best on Monday you have to train to be the best again. It’s never finished.

“It’s part of our life and I have got this feeling for a lot of years.

“I have fears for the health of my family, not for my job.

“I enjoy doing my job in a difficult moment.”

Saints were without Shane Long with flu and Maya Yoshida with a hamstring injury but Pellegrino said: “Friday and Saturday (Yoshida) has been training high intensity.

“It would have been a risk to put him on the bench but this week I think he will be ready.”

Targett joins Fulham on loan

Show/hide article…

The 22-year-old left-back today made the switch to Craven Cottage, linking up with Slaviša Jokanović’s side for the final months of the campaign.

With Ryan Bertrand and Sam McQueen also in the first-team squad, the deal will allow Targett, who has made two appearances for Southampton this season, to gain additional playing time.

Fulham are currently seventh in the Championship table, one point shy of the play-off spots and eight behind the automatic positions, ahead of their final 18 games of the season.

The club wishes Matt good luck during his loan spell, and will remain in regular contact with him throughout.

Matt Targett: Fulham sign Southampton left-back on loan

Show/hide article…

Championship side Fulham have signed left-back Matt Targett on loan from Southampton for the rest of the season.

The 22-year-old has made only two Premier League appearances for the Saints this season.

Fulham are seventh in the table, one point behind the play-off places.

“One of the main reasons I joined is that the club is in a great place at the moment and results have been fantastic. I can’t wait to be a part of that,” he told the club website.

Early results of a study involving the rodents on Brownsea Island in Dorset and the Isle of Arran in Scotland have been published.

Leprosy was first identified in red squirrels in Scotland in 2014.

Post-mortem examinations have since revealed it is also affecting the mammals on Brownsea Island in Poole Harbour and on the Isle of Wight.

Researchers from the University of Edinburgh are working with the National Trust, which manages Brownsea Island, where about 200 red squirrels are found, and Dorset Wildlife Trust, which manages a nature reserve on the island.

Leprosy has not previously been found in grey squirrels so samples have also been taken from 63 grey squirrels and the university is currently preparing its findings for publication.

One pattern that seems to be showing is that even on Brownsea Island not every single squirrel carries leprosy. As it is known that many people are genetically resistant to leprosy, this is a very interesting lead which we are hoping to follow up in the future. Southampton still playing for Pellegrino - Graeme le Saux

Show/hide article…

There were lots of positives for Southampton to take from Sunday’s draw with Tottenham but it does not change the fact manager Mauricio Pellegrino remains under serious pressure.

Marco Silva’s departure from Watford means eight of the 20 Premier League clubs have sacked their manager this season, and there is a reason for the speculation Pellegrino will be next.

Southampton have not won any of their past 11 league games, and have managed only one victory in 15 - a run that goes back to the end of October. On Saturday they dropped into the relegation zone for the first time this season, and they remain 18th.

Excluding the three promoted clubs, Bournemouth are the only other side in the bottom 12 not to have rolled the dice and decided to change their manager.

If you are down there and you are sticking with your man, then you are showing a lot of loyalty, but that will only stretch so far.

Southampton play Watford in the FA Cup fourth round at the weekend, but their next two league games - against Brighton at home and West Brom away are going to be massive for what happens next at St Mary’s.

They are not must-win games for Saints in terms of staying up, but they will play a huge part in deciding whether Pellegrino keeps his job.

Some Southampton fans were unhappy with their style of play under Claude Puel, who was sacked in the summer after finishing eighth and reaching the final of the EFL Cup.

Pellegrino has also been criticised by some supporters for his tactics and apparent lack of attacking ambition, especially at home, but I did not see a problem with that against Spurs.

I thought there was a good balance to the team in the way they approached the game, from all areas of their side.

Left-back Ryan Bertrand, who set up their goal with the cross that Davinson Sanchez put into his own net, gave us some insight into that when he came on Match of the Day 2 to talk about the result.

We were talking about where they tried to exploit Spurs and cause them problems and how, with their full-backs pushing high up the pitch, it became a game of cat and mouse.

Ryan had to pick his moments to make his runs, and time them right too, but you cannot do that if your team does not have enough possession in the right areas to allow you to get forward.

Southampton managed that against Spurs, and it is vital they keep doing it.

As a former full-back, and one who liked to go on the attack, I know what an important role they can play in creating chances if they have the right qualities.

In Ryan, who I have known since he was a young player at Chelsea, they have got someone who can do that.

He has got a fantastic left foot, always likes to get forward, and has the physical ability to get up and down the pitch for 90 minutes.

He linked up well with Dusan Tadic, and that is one of the partnerships Saints must look to build to get themselves out of trouble.

As well as showing plenty of attacking ambition, Southampton did not look like a side that has stopped playing for their manager.

What impressed me most was their attitude, work-rate and togetherness.

They created chances at both ends of the game - the first 15 minutes and the last 15 minutes - and they were strong and held firm under pressure when they had to.

They have not done that enough this season, though, and the key to their survival will be whether they can do it again in the future.

Looking at Sunday’s game in isolation, you would think they were in good shape, and certainly not fighting relegation, but there were still some signs of why they are in trouble.

They wasted some good chances, especially in the first half, and they will have to become more clinical.

Pellegrino has already found out the hard way that one goal is not enough to secure a win in a division like the Premier League, where games are high pressure for 90 minutes. It almost cost them another point on Sunday.

There was also some anxiety around some of their defensive play and a bit of vulnerability when they lost possession.

I can understand why they are scared of conceding because there have been times when they have struggled to score this season.

But they should have gained some confidence from the way they held on against Tottenham for what was a decent point for them, and another big plus was the backing they got from their fans.

Their supporters showed they are absolutely behind them and I think most people in St Mary’s enjoyed that performance. If they can repeat it against weaker teams, they will pick up points and climb the table.

I do have some sympathy for Pellegrino, because whoever took over last summer was always going to have a difficult job.

They had to put up with a huge amount of distraction all season over Virgil van Dijk’s future before he joined Liverpool earlier this month.

Before that, they have become a club that has repeatedly sold their best players. When you do that over a period of time it is going to have an impact on the people who are left behind.

When I look at their team, I see some quality in there, but it must be disheartening for players to see talent come through but then be sold so quickly.

It has been going on so long that invariably it will affect players on the pitch, and morale.

In those circumstances, your manager is your leader. As a player you want to feel that he is in control of what is happening on the pitch, but also have an important role in the decisions that are made off it.

If you lose that belief, you are in trouble.

That is the backdrop to the situation Pellegrino and Southampton find themselves in.

He is a talented manager but what is happening shows how difficult it can be for anyone in his circumstances, at a selling club.

There are only so many times you can dip into any team and sell players without it having an impact, and that is the biggest reason Saints are having a difficult time at the moment.

Loan Watch: Gallagher scores in Preston draw

Show/hide article…

Sam Gallagher was on target again for loan club Birmingham City, as they drew 1-1 away at Preston North End in the Championship.

Blues dominated proceedings after responding to Ben Davies’ goal, with Gallagher netting his sixth of the season in the 63rd minute.

Jacques Maghoma intense pressing saw him challenge Paul Huntington, and the ball fell loose with keeper Chris Maxwell out of goal leaving the Saints forward to calmly sidefoot home from 18 yards.

Elsewhere in the Championship, there was disappointment for Harrison Reed as Norwich City fell to their first league defeat in five games.

Reed played 59 minutes of the contest before being replaced by Wes Hoolahan. An early goal from James Wilson and a second-half strike from Clayton Donaldson secured all three points, despite Ivan Pinto’s header giving the hosts hope.

In Scotland, Harry Lewis kept a clean sheet to help Dundee United progress past Alloa Athletic and reach the fifth round of the Scottish Cup.

Goals either side of half-time from Mark Durnan and Emil Lyng earned a 2-0 win for the visitors.

Jordy Clasie helped Club Brugge to a 2-2 draw with Royal Antwerp, assisting Ruud Vormer in stoppage time to level things up after Ivan Tomečak had given them hope just one minute earlier.

Marcus Barnes was not involved for Yeovil Town after suffering an ankle injury which will rule him out for up to six weeks.
