Southampton want Spartak Moscow’s Quincy Promes with winger keen on move to England

Southampton are interested in signing Spartak Moscow winger Quincy Promes, according to Sky sources.

It is understood the player is keen on a move to England, but Spartak are holding out for a fee in the region of £30m.

Any deal would likely eclipse Southampton’s current £18.1m club-record fee paid for midfielder Mario Lemina from Juventus last summer.

Promes has scored 53 goals in 101 Russian Premier League appearances for Spartak after joining them from FC Twente in August 2014 for a reported £12m.

The 26-year-old, who is under contract in Moscow until June 2021, was key in Spartak’s league title win last season and was named the Russian Premier League footballer of the year for 2017.

Amsterdam-born Promes has been capped 25 times by the Netherlands, scoring four goals with three of those coming in the 2018 World Cup qualifying campaign.

He has been linked with a move to Liverpool and their manager Jurgen Klopp compared him to Sadio Mane when his side played Spartak in the Champions League this season, saying “he can shoot very quickly and is a proper striker”.

David de Gea Premier League’s top-performing goalkeeper, stats reveal

Show/hide article…

David de Gea has earned plenty of plaudits this season and the stats underline just how important he has been for Manchester United.

The Spaniard has been lauded for his excellent shot-stopping, most notably during United’s 3-1 win over Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium in December, helping his side concede the fewest goals in the Premier League (16) and keeping 13 clean sheets in 23 games overall.

But a deeper look at the numbers is even more revealing. According to Opta’s Expected Goals on Target model (xGoT), which shows how many goals a team should have conceded compared to their actual total, De Gea has prevented a whopping total of 13.8 goals.

It puts him well clear of any other Premier League goalkeeper, but he will face his nearest competitor when Manchester United take on Nick Pope’s Burnley at Turf Moor on Saturday.

Pope has impressed since stepping in for the injured Tom Heaton back in August, conceding just 16 goals in 20 appearances for Sean Dyche’s side and, according to xGoT, preventing a further 8.1 goals.

Lukasz Fabianski, who faces Liverpool with Swansea on Monday Night Football, is ranked third of regular Premier League goalkeepers, with xGoT showing he has prevented 2.3 goals - putting him ahead of Chelsea No 1 Thibaut Courtois (0.3 xG prevented).

Everton’s Jordan Pickford is the only other goalkeeper who does not have a negative expected goals prevented figure, while Ben Foster is ranked lowest. According to Opta’s calculations, West Brom have conceded 29 goals from just 20.1 xG with the Englishman between the sticks this season.

Stoke’s Jack Butland (-6.6 xG prevented) and Huddersfield’s Jonas Lossl (-6.4 xG prevented) make up the rest of the bottom three. Read the full goalkeeper rankings below.

Kane sets sights on another record against Saints

Show/hide article…

Saints are gearing up for one of the toughest tests in world football on Sunday as they aim to prevent Harry Kane from snaring yet another record against them.

The prolific Tottenham striker smashed a hat-trick at Wembley on Boxing Day as Spurs thrashed Saints 5-2, in the process passing Alan Shearer’s mark of 36 Premier League goals in a calendar year.

Kane has kept on plundering the goals since, and now stands on 98 Premier League strikes in total, eyeing two more against Mauricio Pellegrino’s men to hit the milestone century.

Only 26 men have achieved the feat since the current incarnation of the top flight started in 1992.

If Kane were to hit the 100 mark it would move him level with Saints legend Matt Le Tissier, who bagged a century during his illustrious career with the club.

Stopping him will be a monumental task for Saints, especially given Tottenham’s current form.

Former Saints manager Mauricio Pochettino has guided Spurs to eight wins in their last ten in all competitions and, remarkably, they have scored at least twice in all those victories.

Even more worryingly they are hungry for more.

“It is important we keep this momentum going,” said Kane.

“February is a really tough month for us. We play Manchester United then we have Liverpool, Arsenal and the Champions League as well.

“So it is important we keep winning and take this form into February and see what happens.”

Kane’s haul of 20 Premier League goals already this season is just three shy of the total Saints have managed combined in their 23 top flight matches.

As if that wasn’t bad enough for Saints, Spurs have two other players in the current top scorers list with Son Heung-min, who also scored on Boxing Day, having scored eight Premier League goals this season while Christian Eriksen has six.

Saints’ top Premier League goalscorer so far is injured striker Charlie Austin, who also has six.

They are aiming to bounce back from the heartbreak of the controversial late equaliser at Watford and end a run that has seen them go ten Premier League games without a win.
