Matt Targett joins Fulham on loan from Southampton

Show/hide article…

Fulham have signed Southampton full-back Matt Targett on loan for the remainder of the season.

The temporary switch to Craven Cottage sees the 22-year-old reunited with Fulham academy director Huw Jennings, who performed a similar role at Southampton when Targett first joined the club as an eight-year-old.

Targett, who has played 42 games in all competitions since making his Southampton debut in 2014, is desperate to help seventh-placed Fulham’s push for promotion from the Sky Bet Championship.

“I’m really happy to be here,” Targett told Fulham’s official website. "I am looking forward to helping the side push on to the play-offs.

"One of the main reasons I joined is that the club is in a great place at the moment and the results have been fantastic. I can’t wait to be a part of that.

“I am very excited to make my Fulham debut and the most important thing is that we pick up the three points when I do.”

Fulham vice-chairman and director of operations, Tony Khan, added: "Matt is a talented young player, and he will be an exciting addition to our squad.

“He brings Premier League experience with him, and we feel that he can be a valuable contributor to our team as we continue to push for promotion.”

Pellegrino hails Saints’ latest graduate Obafemi

Show/hide article…

Obafemi, a free-scoring striker at youth level, was introduced in the 82nd minute with Saints and Spurs locked at 1-1 at St Mary’s.

The teenager had the chance to write his own fairy-tale finish, but was unable to connect sweetly with a low cross from Dušan Tadić in a lively cameo.

“He’s a really fast player and his speed is his most important quality,” said Pellegrino of the young prospect.

“He is also a good finisher, and I observed that their back four was really high and he could have some chances.

“He was there and he was really close, but it’s still the beginning of his career and he has to grow a lot.

“To us, we have had a good history with our home-grown players and Michael is one more.”

Pellegrino was quick to praise the Saints supporters for sticking with his team in a nail-biting end-to-end finale.

“When the people see that everybody is committed and that you want to do your best, and even when you are in trouble you want to win the game, I think the people are grateful.

“We have to be proud that our fans, even in a difficult situation, are behind us.”

Bertrand pleased by battling Spurs display

Show/hide article…

A spirited display saw captain Bertrand’s left-wing cross converted by Davinson Sánchez to give the hosts a lead, before Harry Kane’s 99th Premier League goal levelled.

And despite both sides having chances to win it late in the second-half, the full-back was happy with a point.

“In the grand scheme of things, it’s a good point. It’s a shame as we could of and should of took three points but in the position we’re in we’ve got to be realistic,” Bertrand reflected.

“We’re fighting for points. If you analyse the fixtures we’ve got ten or so games that are definitely must wins and others we can win but they’re not necessarily the points we’re expected to take.

“We are more than capable of stringing two results together back to back and we’re four points off the top ten at the minute so if you do that it’s a completely different outlook.”

He added: “I can understand the fans frustrations. They’ve been short-tempered at times but they have every right to be.

“We have high expectations at this club but even in these times they have to stick with us. They showed that, they were fantastic and more than helped us get the point.”

Ref Watch: Brighton should have had a penalty against Chelsea, says Dermot Gallagher

Show/hide article…

Should Brighton have been awarded at least one penalty against Chelsea? Was Everton’s equaliser against West Brom onside? Dermot Gallagher has his say in this week’s Ref Watch.

As always, there were a number of hotly disputed decisions over the weekend in the Premier League, however, not to worry as we have Dermot here to run his eye over those big calls.

So whether it is penalties not awarded, tight offside calls and possible red cards not handed out, the former top-flight referee gives us his verdict…

Incident: Brighton manager Chris Hughton felt his side should have had two penalties at the Amex, the first when Willy Caballero tripped Ezequiel Schelotto.

Dermot says: It was reported on Sky Sports on the weekend that referee John Moss told Chris Hughton at half-time that he could not see it. And when you see the pictures, he obviously can’t because he is on the left side of the picture. Caballero’s body then shields him as he goes in. It is a foul on review, there is no doubt about it. And if it had gone to the VAR, it is a clear and obvious error and so would have been a penalty.

Incident: The same Brighton player was involved with the next penalty call with Tiemoue Bakayoko the Chelsea player in question this time.

Dermot says: I think not and I also think if this went to the VAR, they would stick with the referee’s decision because some people think it is a penalty, I do not, I think it is a coming together. What I would say is if anybody does say it is a penalty, it is certainly not a clear and obvious error, so it would not be referred.

Incident: Was Raheem Sterling offside for his goal that was disallowed?

Dermot says: Just. Another really, really tight call. But when you see it sideways on, as the assistant sees it as speed, I am astonished… that is a really tough call, but a correct call.

Dermot says: I think it is a foul because he decides to try and pull him, he can’t pull him, and then he decides to push him. And I think he does enough to bundle him over and it is a foul.

Incident: Burnley boss Sean Dyche was unhappy Paul Pogba wasn’t sent off. The France international was booked later on, but there were two earlier incidents, starting with the midfielder holding back Jack Cork. And then the player kicks the ball away.

Dermot’s verdict: Correct decision, no red card as the first incident was not worth a booking

Dermot says: I do not think that is as clear cut as you see as when you see it the Burnley player is also going to kick the ball. So when the whistle has gone, both of them go to kick the ball and Pogba gets there first and kicks it away. So it was not one that was blatantly kicked away with intent or dissent.

The second one, I think that is where the referee [Mike Dean] has been really good. It is a foul, but what he has done is said, ‘I have spoken to you there and have already given you a warning.’ So that is proactive and really good refereeing.

Incident: Everton’s equaliser - there was no offside against striker Oumar Niasse?

Dermot says: The minute that ball got played in, I would have flagged Niasse offside honestly. But he is not offside - he is in an offside position, the ball goes over his head to [Theo] Walcott, who heads it back, and he is then in an onside position and scores. Top draw that from the assistant.

Targett heads to Fulham on loan

Show/hide article…

SAINTS defender Matt Targett has moved to Fulham on loan until the end of the season.

The left-back has played just two games for Saints this season and the club knew it was important for the 22-year-old’s development to play regular football.

With Sam McQueen providing cover for Ryan Bertrand at left-back at St Mary’s, Targett has been allowed to move to Craven Cottage to get some games under his belt.

He’ll link up with the Championship side as they look to secure a play-off spot.

“I’m really happy to be here,” Targett told Fulham’s website. “I am looking forward to helping the side push on to the play-offs.

“One of the main reasons I joined is that club is in a great place at the moment and the results have been fantastic. I can’t wait to be a part of that.

“I am very excited to make my Fulham debut and the most important thing is that we pick up the three points when I do.”
