LISTEN: Super Sunday podcast featuring Jermain Defoe and Graeme Souness

Show/hide article…

Jermain Defoe and Graeme Souness give their thoughts on Southampton’s 1-1 draw with Tottenham at St Mary’s.

The Nissan Super Sunday game saw struggling Saints take a deserved lead through Davinson Sanchez’s own goal, only for Harry Kane to equalise for the visitors just three minutes later with a close-range header.

That goal took Kane to 99 in the Premier League, but neither he nor anyone else could find the winner in difficult conditions on the south coast as both sides settled for a point.

Following the game, our two pundits discussed the performance of both sides, with an eye on man-of-the-match James Ward-Prowse while pondering on whether Spurs missed Christian Eriksen, who did not play because of illness.

Premier League fans’ verdict

Show/hide article…

Another fascinating weekend of action saw Chelsea put four goals past Brighton as Eden Hazard shone.

Meanwhile, Arsenal showed that their is life after Alexis Sanchez as Alexandre Lacazette produced a fine display against Crystal Palace.

Here, Sportsmail gets the fans’ verdicts following the latest weekend of action…

We were all at sea for 20 minutes and got mugged. But then we found our feet and our hearts and came back superbly, only to be cheated by a clown with a whistle. Twice.

We still kept creating chances but our finishing was poor and when their third went in our spirit broke. On any other day, Mat Ryan’s saves would have earned him man of the match but Ezequiel Schelotto epitomized everything we need to stay up.

Chelsea put all their issues with scoring goals to one side as Antonio Conte had little choice but to revert back to the 3-4-3 formation that had served us so well last year.

The team move that led to Willian’s goal was a contender for goal of the season. Willy Caballero, in for the injured Courtois, was forced into two excellent saves from close range to keep Brighton at bay. The only downside was a head injury to Andreas Christensen.

Let’s hope we don’t have too many more of these between now and the end of the season.

A real off day for Palace — or more to the point a mad 20 odd minutes — against a team who clearly had a point to prove. That is two defeats in 13 games and both have been against a Gunners side who have decided to turn up!

We have been pushing our luck with a threadbare squad which needs reinforcements this month which Roy will know only too well.

This was an excellent performance from our team that deserved at least a point.

We gave them a really tough last half-hour. They were hanging on, wasting time, even saw their manager pushing injured players on to get the game held up.

This was, despite the result, a performance that showed just what a decent team we are becoming in the Premier League.

Anthony Martial once again proved himself as a matchwinner.

With Alexis Sanchez on his way to United, it was the perfect way for Martial to make sure he stays in the team and show Jose Mourinho he can trust him.

Despite Everton starting with a £100million front line, West Brom played better football and produced more attempts on goal.

Allardyce has shown how laughable his appointment is. Zero attacking intent, sitting just in front of our own penalty area for 90 minutes, no link-up play. I feel sorry for both Tosun and Walcott, coming into this team with no idea what it’s doing. We’re the laughing stock of the Premier League and I don’t see times changing soon.

All in all a solid away point for the Baggies. If Pogba had picked a similar pass to the one Krychowiak played to set up Rodriguez, he would have a statue built outside Old Trafford! Disappointing to concede but the change since the dark days of Pulis is unreal.

We look confident going forward and assured at the back. Southampton at home next is a real six-pointer. Also, I wish a speedy recovery to James McCarthy, and I hope it doesn’t affect Salomon Rondon too much.

Great to see Leicester riding high in seventh after seeing off a resilient Watford.

Jamie Vardy and Riyad Mahrez are the difference between a draw and a win. It is an absolute must that we keep hold of these two this month.

Harry Maguire was rock solid at the back yet again.

Marco Silva sealed his own fate with that performance.

We didn’t expect to win at Leicester, but we should at least be putting up a fight.

Silva showed great potential early this season but things have never been the same since he flirted with Everton.

Our head coach had clearly lost the respect of the playters and in the end, sadly, it was clear that he had to go.

Paul Lambert’s impact was tangible. The ragged Stoke side which had been dragging it’s sorry-looking backsides around the pitch for so long this season was gone, and replaced by a pumped-up side looking determined and organised.

No Stoke player had a bad game but Kurt Zouma, Joe Allen, Erik Pieters and new signing Moritz Bauer were genuinely outstanding. A word too for the fans who got the bet365 absolutely rocking at times.

This is one big step for Stoke City and if they are to save themselves this season then the standard they have to reach has been established with this victory.

Things are looking bleak for Town. Two away wins all season and no wins in six is simply not good enough.

There is a lack of quality throughout the team, and although Stoke were buoyed by a new manager, the lack of attacking threat is disappointing.

With the attacking players at our disposal, 19 goals scored is not good enough. Although Wagner is happy with the squad, there are obvious frailties that need addressing in the window. The upcoming games against Bournemouth and West Brom now become massive.

While West Ham’s unbeaten run in the Premier League continued, they’ll come away from the draw against Bournemouth perhaps a little disappointed.

The first half hour was undoubtedly the best football of the David Moyes era and they would’ve been rewarded had it not been for some wayward finishing.

Chicharito came off the bench to grab a viral equaliser but the Hammers will be sweating over the fitness of Manuel Lanzini who injured his hamstring in the second half. As he went off, he took any semblance of a creative spark with him.

If West Ham are to continue their rise up the table, they’re going to need Lanzini pulling the strings, or recruit someone who can ease the load.

The Cherries remain slow starters, but it was ridiculous to concede an equaliser only seconds after going ahead.

Still, West Ham had the better chances. Asmir Begovic proved again that he was wasted on the bench at Chelsea. In the end, it was just good to take a point and to see Junior Stanislas and Josh King back in action.

Many outsiders were hoping that last week’s defeat by Liverpool was going to be the start of a collapse.

Saturday’s performance suggested it looks like a blip and nothing more. This was a return to the confident, dominant, oppressive City that we have seen all season.

The finishing didn’t quite match the build-up play, but this was routinely comfortable.

David Silva, as ever, dictated our game. Oleksandr Zinchenko was excellent on his first Premier League start and Sergio Aguero showed once again that, despite not being a typical Pep Guardiola player, he guarantees goals.

Losing 3-1 to one of the best sides the Premier League has seen is hardly embarrassing.

The major thing to take away from this game is that after a slow start to his Newcastle career, Jacob Murphy is beginning to make a significant impact on Tyneside.

Let’s hope a few new fresh faces have arrived by the time we play our next league game.

Looking at Sunday’s performance away from the context of our season, we deserve serious credit for not allowing Tottenham to find their full-flow and working a number of golden chances against an incredibly resilient defence.

The decision to play a midfield trio of Romeu, Lemina and Ward-Prowse worked perfectly, and It’s also incredibly encouraging to have Bertrand and Cedric back to full fitness. The duo are arguably our most important players in the transition from defence to attack.

But ultimately, we’ve still gone 11 Premier League games without a win and find ourselves a point away from safety. There are no excuses anymore; three points simply have to be picked up against Brighton.

Disappointing. Eriksen and Lloris out with the Flu and it wouldn’t surprise me if a few of the others were suffering a bit too.

Not to mention Sissoko Who seems to have had some sort of disease that affects his ability to play even average level football for the past 18 months now.

Southampton deserved at least a point and it would have been daylight robbery had Kane scored with his chance in the last minute. With tough games ahead it’s going to be the time to really see what this side are made of.

Grateful Obafemi keen to kick on after Southampton debut

Show/hide article…

(Reuters) - Southampton forward Michael Obafemi is eager to kick on after becoming the first player born after the year 2000 to feature for the club in a Premier League match.

The 17-year-old made his league debut in Sunday’s 1-1 home draw with Tottenham Hotspur. He came off the bench in the 82nd minute and missed a glorious opportunity to grab the winner shortly after.

“I am very thankful to all the staff and club for helping to make this happen,” Obafemi told the club’s website. (southamptonfc.com)

”I can’t stop here, this is just the start of what I hope is my career. When the chance came, I should have used my left foot but I hope I will get another opportunity to prove I can make it at this level.

“I was nervous but the welcome from the supporters was brilliant and the senior guys told me to just relax and prove myself. I want to move on from here and keep working hard.”

Southampton are winless in 11 consecutive league games and sit 18th in the table.

THE VERDICT: Saints start the fightback?

Show/hide article…

How quickly things can change in football.

After Saturday’s games there was a sense of dread and doom about St Mary’s.

Results had dumped Saints into the bottom three, on a run of ten Premier League matches without a win, and having to face a Tottenham side on great form, and who had thumped them 5-2 just a few weeks earlier.

Come Sunday evening Saints were still in the bottom three, but how different the mood felt.

Gone were the storm clouds, replaced by rays of light.

Saints finally gave their fans what they needed, a performance, a full 90 minutes, of great play, energy and fight, as they more than matched Tottenham and got a very creditable point.

So often the final whistle at St Mary’s this season has brought with it boos, jeers and recriminations.

This time it was applause, chanting, and, most importantly, pride.

The players showed it and it was replicated by the fans.

If Saints are to get out of this it’s exactly what is required.

Mauricio Pellegrino needs above all support, both from the club, in terms of finally delivering new signings that ideally would have arrived already, and supporters.

At least he seems have to have got into his players that they are in a fight now.

Perhaps the reality dawned on everybody when the league table panned out as it did on Saturday.

You can just about stay blinkered while you have your head above water, but once you start to take it on board the reality becomes very stark.

It is still not too late in the season to do something about it, but the time for action had arrived, and Saints stepped up.

Saints came out at the start of the game with intensity and determination.

They weren’t afraid to press Tottenham high up the pitch, somewhat playing them at their own game, and went toe-to-toe with their in-form opponents.

Manolo Gabbiadini set the tone after only 13 seconds with a shot that required a save from Michel Vorm, while had Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg been more ruthless then he might have got on the scoresheet.

Dusan Tadic put in two good balls, the first of which Hojbjerg had not anticipated might come to the far post and his run was too late, while later he got in at the near post but failed to make contact when he might have turned home.

Saints got the goal their pressure deserved on 15 minutes.

Ryan Bertrand’s sprint down the left and low cross was met by Davinson Sanchez sliding in at the near post to try and cut it out, but he made a mess of it and the ball went into his own net via the inside of the woodwork.

Saints needed to try and consolidate and were given a warning shot as an outswinging Ben Davies corner was half volleyed onto the post by Eric Dier just two minutes after they had taken the lead.

Just moments later the game was level.

This time it was an inswinging corner from Davies, Harry Kane shoved off the attentions of Jack Stephens and outjumped Gabbiadini in the middle of the six yard box for a simple header home just 197 seconds after Saints had netted.

Both teams had a decent chance before the break but Moussa Sissoko volleyed wide from a drilled Davies shot, while Stephens headed off target when he had the chance to pick his spot from a James Ward-Prowse free kick.

Both keepers also had to make saves, Alex McCarthy blocking from Dier and Mario Lemina’s effort stopped by Vorm.

While it perhaps shouldn’t have been a huge surprise that Saints produced a good first half given their recent performances, the trend over the last few weeks in particular has been for the second period to be a more deflating affair.

Saints have been accused of sitting back, of not remaining positive, though that has surely been as much to do with confidence as it has tactics.

So it was encouraging then to see them making a conscious effort to continue to press.

In truth there wasn’t too much in it for a long period of the half as both sides were restricted to efforts from distance as Vorm saved from Ward-Prowse and Gabbiadini, while Dele Alli’s low drive whistled wide.

The game did have a pulsating finish, and really could have gone either way.

Erik Lamela couldn’t convert at the near post for Spurs, thanks largely to great defending from Jack Stephens, while Saints almost had a fairy-tale moment.

With Shane Long out with flu, there was an unexpected chance for 17-year-old academy product Michael Obafemi.

He was introduced with eight minutes remaining and got a dream opening as Tadic crossed low from the right and Obafemi found himself unmarked six yards out.

However, he could not make anything like a clean contact and the ball went well wide.

Up the other end Kane had the chance to shoot in the area, but just when you expected yet another goal, he fired wide.

The reaction from the Saints supporters as the team walked off told you all you needed to know. The fightback may just have started.

Oba ‘overwhelmed’ by Saints debut

Show/hide article…

A BEAMING Michael ‘Oba’ Obafemi admitted he was “overwhelmed” to make his Saints debut in the 1-1 draw with Tottenham at St Mary’s yesterday.

The 17-year-old striker was a surprise inclusion in the squad with Shane Long out due to illness.

The academy man, who has scored 12 goals for the under-18s this season, came on as a late substitute for Manolo Gabbiadini.

“It’s been a dream to make my debut in the Premier League since I was a small kid, but it’s a stepping stone and hopefully I can move on from here,” he said.

The Ireland Under-19 international, who joined Saints from Leyton Orient having been brought up in London, was preparing for Saints Under-18s game against Fulham yesterday when he got the nod to be in the first-team.

The youngster came on in the 82nd minute and was gifted a golden chance to cap off his debut with a goal but he was unable to finish from Dusan Tadic’s cross.

“I came in on Saturday thinking I was going to be playing the under-18s match against Fulham but then I got told I was training with the first team and I’d be potentially in the squad for today,” he said.

“I was and I’m thankful for making my debut.”

He added: “I was overwhelmed because it’s a big stage to be put on but I’m just thankful for the opportunity.

“It was overwhelming but I think I dealt with it alright and I should have put that chance away but I’ve just got to move on.”

Talking about his missed chance, he said: “I don’t really know what happened to be fair, I just got caught in the moment and didn’t take the chance.”

Obafemi was drafted in straight from the under-18s and has scarcely yet played for the under-23 academy team.

“You watch it yourself and it’s the best league in the world. I’m just thankful I’ve played in it,” he said about his debut.

“Hopefully I’m able to start in the Premier League but now I’ve got to move on and use this as a starting point.

“I’ve been doing well for the under-18s. I’ve got 12 goals this season for them and now I’m looking to get more goals in this half of the season.

“Hopefully I can play more games for the under-23s and go from there.

“I’ve not really played under-23s very much.”

Obafemi, who bases his game on former Brazilian striker Ronaldo and was scouted by Saints while playing for Orient in April 2016, was thankful for the support the Mauricio Pellegrino gave to him on his big day. “Pellegrino was just telling to me to show them what I can do and get behind and cause trouble, which I think I did,” he said.

Saints hope for “good week” with £50m double swoop

Show/hide article…

Mauricio Pellegrino believes it could be a good week for Saints as they try and tie up a £50m double swoop for Quincy Promes and Guido Carrillo.

The club have already been boosted by a spirited draw at Tottenham, and could get a significant lift if Les Reed can deliver two new faces in the coming days.

Pacy Dutch winger Promes could obliterate the club’s transfer record if he arrives from Spartak Moscow for a fee of around £30m, while big Argentinian striker Carrillo is a potential £20m transfer from Monaco.

“Hopefully next week will be a good week for us,” said Pellegrino.

“In the market anything can change in one second. It’s like football.

“Negotiation is about two sides and you have limitations to arrive at a point and then you need the other part to do the job.”

The result against Spurs has eased the pressure on Pellegrino, who had joked being a manager is like sitting in an electric chair.

“We use it as a joke,” he smiled.

“They ask if I am worried about my job but the manager is the easier employee to lose, because we depend on results. We use this as a joke.

“It’s really difficult to be seated in the same chair a lot of time.”

As if to prove it, Watford sacked Marco Silva, who had been a potential for the Saints job before going to Vicarage Road.

“I have to respect the decision because I don’t know what happened in this club,” said Pellegrino.

“The biggest risk in football is to work in football.

“If the sense of everything that this is a game but the problem is we hear budgets, and money, and you will buy players, and we think it’s a match.

“The sense of everything this is a game. If you don’t want to lose don’t play the game.

“I am not afraid to lose my job to be honest because it’s part of our life.

“I play football from ten-years-old and when you win you have to win again, when you draw you have to win, when you lose you have to win. The question is always the same.

“I play for teams and was very lucky because I was champion a lot of years, but even when you are the best on Monday you have to train to be the best again. It’s never finished.

“It’s part of our life and I have got this feeling for a lot of years.

“I have fears for the health of my family, not for my job.

“I enjoy doing my job in a difficult moment.”

Saints were without Shane Long with flu and Maya Yoshida with a hamstring injury but Pellegrino said: “Friday and Saturday (Yoshida) has been training high intensity.

“It would have been a risk to put him on the bench but this week I think he will be ready.”
