Mauricio Pellegrino fights back over his future and insists ‘I don’t fear the sack’

Mauricio Pellegrino fights back over his future and insists ‘I don’t fear the sack’

Mauricio Pellegrino insists he does not fear losing his job at Southampton despite comparing football management to being in an electric chair.

Saints stretched their winless run in the Premier League to 11 games but put in a spirited performance in a 1-1 draw with Tottenham on Super Sunday.

Pellegrino, speaking to broadcast media, joked that they say in Argentina a manager’s job is like being in an electric chair as it is not easy to stay in the seat for long.

When asked to expand on those comments, he replied: "When they asked me about if I’m worried about my job, I said it as a joke.

“The manager is an easy employment to lose. It’s very difficult to be sitting in the same chair for a long time.”

Southampton stay 18th, but this was a morale-boosting point gained in the battle against relegation and in particular for Pellegrino.

The grumbling at St Mary’s has grown louder in recent weeks regarding his future and with Marco Silva available after being sacked by Watford hours before kick-off, another disappointing result could have proved costly for the Argentinian.

Saints have not won in the league since thrashing Everton 4-1 on November 26, but Pellegrino remains confident he can reverse the south coast club’s fortunes.

“I fear for the health of my family, not my job. I enjoy doing my job - even when you are in difficult moments,” he said.

“The players aren’t fighting just for me, they are fighting for themselves and the club. The club is bigger than me and the players. We need to respect our fans and our board and the people that believe in us. My first commitment is to win myself as it’s my profession - I want to win every game.”

“Dream come true” for Obafemi

Show/hide article…

It was a “special feeling” for the 17-year-old – Saints’ second youngest top-flight debutant behind Luke Shaw – who may have even netted the winner with a greater slice of luck after agonisingly volleying wide from Dušan Tadić’s cross.

That moment did little to tarnish what was “a dream come true” for Obafemi, who was quick to thank the Saints staff for his landmark appearance in Sunday’s 1-1 draw.

“I am very thankful to all the staff and club for helping to make this happen,” he said.

“I came in yesterday thinking that I would be playing for the U18s. The manager stopped me and said that I would be training instead and would maybe be in the first-team squad; it was confirmed later on in the afternoon!”

For Obafemi, this important step marks just the beginning of his Saints journey.

“I can’t stop here, this is just the start of what I hope is my career.” he concluded. “When the chance came, I should have used my left foot but I hope I will get another opportunity to prove I can make it at this level.

“I was nervous but the welcome from the supporters was brilliant and the senior guys told me to just relax and prove myself. I want to move on from here and keep working hard.”

Pellegrino pleased with Saints attitude

Show/hide article…

Saints briefly held a first-half lead when Davinson Sanchez turned Ryan Bertrand’s low cross into his own net, only for Harry Kane to head home a quick-fire leveller.

Not content with a share of the spoils against the Champions League hopefuls, Saints threatened to snatch victory as substitutes Michael Obafemi – a 17-year-old debutant – and Sofiane Boufal both came close in the dying minutes.

“We have to be pleased with the way we competed,” said manager Pellegrino.

“We showed the right attitude and I think we are on the right path, even though looking at the table we know we are in a difficult moment.

“In three or four weeks’ time, everything can change.

“We have to use this attitude to grow and to believe, because confidence and belief in ourselves is the best drug for our dressing room right now.

“I think we were a little bit lucky in some aspects, but unlucky with our chances too.

“We took some risks and we were in the game until the end; we could win and we could lose, but that’s part of football.”

Pellegrino insists he is not afraid to lose his job after Spurs draw

Show/hide article…

Mauricio Pellegrino compared football management to sitting in an electric chair after Southampton’s 1-1 draw with Tottenham Hotspur at St Mary’s, but nevertheless insisted that he was “not afraid to lose my job.”

Southampton, whose run of 11 league games without a win is the worst of any team in England’s top four divisions, took a shock lead against Tottenham through Davinson Sanchez’s own-goal, only for Harry Kane to equalise three-minutes later.

Southampton however deserved their point and had twice as many shots on target as a below-par Tottenham, who came close to losing the game when 17-year-old substitute Michael Obafemi spurned a glorious chance for the hosts late on.

Pellegrino has come under increasing pressure in recent weeks and his future at the club appeared to be thrown into even more doubt when Watford dispensed with the services of their manager Marco Silva, who had previously been linked with the Southampton manager’s job.

But the Spaniard declared he did not fear being sacked — although admitted the perils of football management was somewhat similar to sitting in an electric chair.

“I fear for a lot of things but I do not fear for my job,” he said after the scrappy draw, which sees Southampton remain 18th in the Premier League table.

“I am not afraid to lose my job because football has always been a part of my life, ever since I was 10-years-old, and in football even when you win a game the next Monday you have to train in order to win again. This is football — if you don’t want to lose then don’t play the game.”

About his electric chair comment, he said: “They asked me if i was worried about my job. When they asked me about if I’m worried about my job, I said it as a joke. That’s how I meant it. The manager is an easy employment to lose. It’s very difficult to be sitting in the same chair for a long time.”

Pellegrino praised his team for their vastly improved performance, as they won just their sixth point since beating Everton 4-1 on 26 November.

He also denied his players had been fighting for his future, as the speculation around his job security at St Mary’s continues.

“We played good football with a good attitude,” he said. “We played an amazing side and they don’t need too much action to create problems. But we sustained well in some moments and caused problems until the end. We could have lost, we could have won. So we are heading in the right path. We are in trouble now with our position but in three or four weeks everything can change.

“The players are not just fighting for me but for themselves. And they are fighting for the club. Southampton Football Club is bigger than me and all of the players. We have to respect the fans and the board and all of the people who believe is us.”

The struggling club have been linked with moves for Spartak Moscow winger Quincy Promes and Monaco striker Guido Carrillo, and Pellegrino added that he “hoped next week in the market will be a good week for us”.

LISTEN: The Gary Neville podcast featuring Southampton v Spurs

Show/hide article…

Gary Neville and Martin Tyler discuss Southampton’s 1-1 draw with Tottenham and the big talking points from the weekend’s football.

The Sky Sports commentators debated the game, which saw Southampton take the lead courtesy of Davinson Sanchez’s own goal before Harry Kane equalised three minutes later with his 99th Premier League goal.

Gary and Martin also talked about Kane’s exquisite technique, with Gary insisting Spurs will not allow their star striker or Mauricio Pochettino to leave at such a “crucial point in the club’s history” ahead of the move to the new stadium.

Also on the agenda was Saturday’s action and Chelsea’s “random” search for a new striker before the end of the transfer window.

Marco Silva pushed for too much too soon

Show/hide article…

What ultimately cost Marco Silva his job at Watford is that he has been too ambitious for his own good.

He made a great start at Hull last season, giving them a fighting chance of staying up. Despite suffering relegation, it was inevitable that another top-flight club would want him in charge and he had Watford flying in his first few months in charge.

Yet as soon as Everton came calling, Silva’s head was turned. It was clear the players sensed he did not want to be there and that will have filtered through to the owners.

I do not believe Silva will be out of work for long. He is a promising manager and will be the next cab off the rank when another Premier League team make a change. In his next role, Silva needs to stay there for a season at least and prove that he has what it takes to see the job through.

It is one thing guiding Watford to fourth place after eight games. Had he remained committed and delivered Watford’s highest finish since returning to the Premier League, few would have begrudged him a chance at a bigger club.

Watford’s owners are no strangers to hiring and firing managers. Silva was their ninth manager in less than six years and have already replaced him with former Malaga boss Javi Gracia. Silva has assembled a good squad which should be good enough to stay up.

Although recent form has been poor, the Everton interest is not a good enough reason for the board to justify sacking Silva. If anything, they should be proud that they have such a sought-after manager.

Despite winning just one of their last 11 league games, Watford are still 10th. Having finished 13th and 17th in their two seasons back in the top flight, Watford have been punching above their weight.

It seems that after a fast start to the season, the club’s owners developed unrealistic expectations.

After their surrender at Bournemouth last week, I argued in these pages that it was the worst Arsenal team I had seen.

On Saturday, Arsenal needed just 22 minutes to go 4-0 up against Crystal Palace. The difference? Mesut Ozil.

Without Ozil and Alexis Sanchez last weekend, it was a worrying glimpse of the future for Arsenal. Against Palace, they proved that with Ozil and Jack Wilshere they can blow teams away and it is vital that Arsene Wenger gets them both signed up. Ozil has Arsenal where he wants them.

Now Sanchez has gone, he knows the club cannot risk losing him. It reminds me of when Steve McManaman left Liverpool for Real Madrid. To prevent other players from leaving, the club gave us all a pay rise. Even if it means breaking their wage structure, Arsenal have to give Ozil what he wants.

The next few weeks are huge. Arsenal have a great chance of reaching the Carabao Cup final, and if Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang comes in as well as Henrikh Mkhitaryan, Wenger can rekindle the pair’s superb understanding from their days at Borussia Dortmund. Fail to tie down their stars, though, and the future does not look rosy.

James McCarthy has suffered a horrendous injury after breaking his leg against West Brom and I wish him a speedy recovery.

I also felt for Salomon Rondon, whose accidental challenge caused the injury. I thought Alan Pardew was superb in looking after his player in the aftermath of the incident.

Rondon was understandably inconsolable and I know exactly how he was feeling.

When I was 15 and in the youth team at Bournemouth, I remember making what seemed like an innocuous tackle in training which ended up breaking a team-mate’s leg.

Even though it is not deliberate, you feel completely to blame for what has happened.

It can be incredibly distressing to witness a fellow professional suffer such a graphic injury.

On Saturday, Alan knew how distraught Rondon would be and immediately went over to comfort him. It would have been easy to take off the player but Alan was able to find the right words to reassure him.

What he did was an admirable piece of management in an awful situation.

Riyad Mahrez is in scintillating form. His performances are almost at the level they were when Leicester won the title. The better the players he plays with, the more you get from Mahrez.

I don’t understand why one of the top six hasn’t made an offer. He has been linked with Liverpool, but Mo Salah plays in his position. Given the departures of Alexis Sanchez and Theo Walcott, Arsenal may be a better fit for him.

Last season, I thought Sergio Aguero’s days at Manchester City were numbered. He did not seem like Pep Guardiola’s type of player and there were question marks over his ability to press from the front.

Now, Aguero is doing it as well as anyone and is setting the tempo. He has benefited from sharing striker duties with Gabriel Jesus and looks as fresh and fit as I have seen him. His sublime hat-trick against Newcastle was more evidence of how important he is to Guardiola.

At the start of the season, Jack Wilshere and James Ward-Prowse were two players who would not have been at the front of Gareth Southgate’s mind when it came to picking a World Cup squad.

Wilshere had yet to prove his fitness and Ward-Prowse could not hold down a place in the Southampton team.

Now, both are making strong cases for a place on the plane to Russia. Wilshere has been Arsenal’s star performer in recent weeks and if Ward-Prowse continues to play as he did against Tottenham yesterday, he will do his England credentials no harm.

Given his excellent set-piece delivery, Ward-Prowse could be someone Gareth turns to in the last 15 minutes of games.

Pellegrino happier than compatriot Pochettino with draw

Show/hide article…

LONDON (Reuters) - Southampton’s Mauricio Pellegrino was the happier of the Premier League’s two Argentine managers even though Sunday’s 1-1 draw against Mauricio Pochettino’s Tottenham Hotspur left his team in the relegation places.

Southampton had dropped to 18th position for the first time this season when Stoke City moved above them on Saturday.

Although one point from Sunday’s game was not enough to move them any higher, Pellegrino believes it was another improved performance of the type they have shown since losing 5-2 to Spurs a month ago.

”I think we are on the right path,“ he said. ”In the last four games the response has been good. They (Tottenham) are an amazing team with top players.

”We cannot transform the performance into goals and more points but we need to show again in the next game.

”Every single game for us now is massive.

“Confidence is sometimes not the best when you are in a bad moment and don’t want to take risks. But little by little we improve.”

Pellegrino is well aware that clubs like Crystal Palace, Everton, Leicester City and West Ham United have all improved by changing managers after falling into the bottom three this season.

A fighting draw gave him cause for optimism, however, despite coming under pressure a few months into the job with only one league win since October.

It is his first season at the club where Pochettino made his name and earned a move to Tottenham four years ago.

Since then Spurs have finished fifth, third and second, but they will be five points behind the four Champions League places if fourth-placed Liverpool win at bottom club Swansea City on Monday.

”To win the game we should do better and play better,“ Pochettino said of Sunday’s performance. ”It wasn’t great.

”The game was even, we had more possession but we needed to be more aggressive and create more chances.

”You must give credit to the opponent, but I am not happy with our performance.

”We needed to move the ball quicker and create more, we made a lot of mistakes. It is impossible to win the game when you make these mistakes.

”It is two points we are going to miss at the end of the season because it is so tough between six or seven teams.

He did have encouraging words for his old club.

“It is temporary that Southampton are in the relegation zone, for sure they will push up the table,” Pochettino said.

Exeter City midfielder Lloyd James — One to Eleven

Show/hide article…

Exeter City and former Southampton midfielder Lloyd James has his say on exaggerating his age to get a game, doing battle with Dimitar Berbatov and facing his childhood hero Ryan Giggs.

The first thing I remember was going to training for Keynsham Town under sevens when I was five. The manager asked me if I was available to play in a game and my dad had told me beforehand that I wasn’t allowed as I was two years younger.

As I was walking off I told the manager: ‘I’m all right, I’m old enough.’ That little porkie pie got me in and I played my first ever game.

Adam Lallana at Southampton. Gareth Bale is up there but as an all-round footballer I’d have to say Lallana. He had a few injuries when we were in the youth team but once he got a full year, during his second-year scholarship, he came on in leaps and bounds.

Lallana was a joy to play with. He played off the striker, was always available for a pass and would get me out of a lot of trouble.

Dimitar Berbatov. I played against him for Southampton in the FA Cup in 2009. He has this aura that he looks a bit lazy but once you play against him you see his movement off the ball and how strong he is.

There have been a few. To play in two play-off finals at Wembley (with Leyton Orient and Exeter) has been good.

When I was growing up it was Ryan Giggs. I would always want to be him when I was out playing with my mates… not that I could dribble past players! I played against him in that Cup tie and while he wasn’t in his prime, he was still fantastic.

Mansfield. It’s always a tough place to go and I haven’t got too many fond memories of playing there.

It would have been a Peter Andre album. I used to love him, the Spice Girls and Mark Morrison when I was a kid.

Sweet Caroline. Everybody is singing along with you!

Apart from myself, Ryan Harley is very smartly dressed. But the best-dressed person at the club would be Paul Tisdale, the gaffer.

I’ve always been a Manchester United fan. I’d like to have a chat with David Beckham, and I would definitely invite Sir Alex Ferguson. I’d have to invite my wife, too.

I would love to be a golfer, but I’m no way good enough. I’m playing off 15, but it could be 28 on a bad day!

Southampton 1-1 Tottenham: Saints on the “right path”

Show/hide article…

Mauricio Pellegrino insists Saints are “on the right path” after they produced a stirring display to draw 1-1 with Tottenham at St Mary’s.

Saints have found themselves in the bottom three after results over the weekend, but gave renewed hope with a terrific performance against in-form Spurs.

It was a world away from the 5-2 hammering Saints suffered at Wembley on Boxing Day, and gave further credence to the theory that Saints are showing real signs of improvement.

Pellegrino said: “I think we show football, we show good attitude, even when we were in trouble, to try and win the game.

“We play against an amazing side who don’t need to do too many actions to create problems but I think we sustain well in some moments and we create problems and until the end we could lose or we could win. It is part of the quality of the players.

“I think we are on the right path in this way and I am sure we will improve.

“Obviously we are in trouble in our position in this moment we are there but in three or four weeks everything can change.”

Pellegrino was under ever increasing pressure going into the Spurs game, but the attitude and commitment of the players certainly suggested they are ready to roll up their sleeves and fight for their boss.

The manager, though, played down thoughts the squad are fighting to keep him in his job.

“They don’t fight just for me. They fight for themselves. They fight for the club,” he insisted.

“There is something bigger than me and the players and this is the club and respect our fans, the club, the board and people.

“My first commitment is I love my profession but football is like when you are dancing with the other.

“It is 22 and not just 11.”

Saints are still 11 Premier League games without victory, but at least have a feeling they are improving.

“I think the team in the last four or five weeks from Manchester United game move one step forward in our consistency, but also now we cannot convert this moment in more points for the table,” reckoned Pellegrino.

“Even against Palace the first half we play a good game, against Watford the first half was really good.

“In some aspects we have to move one step forward and today the attitude from the beginning until the end was good.”

It was at least more like Pellegrino wants from his side.

“For sure. Something we have to improve is to keep the ball more because it’s difficult to run behind the ball against this side a lot of time,” said the Saints manager.

“We have to improve the capacity to hold the ball in the opponent half and from this position anything can change.”

Southampton 1-1 Tottenham: Spirited Saints fight for brave draw

Show/hide article…

Saints produced a spirited performance to draw 1-1 with Tottenham at St Mary’s and help under-pressure boss Mauricio Pellegrino.

Harry Kane scored his 99th league goal after Davinson Sanchez had given Southampton a surprise first-half lead by turning the ball into his own net.

Both sides had chances to nick a late winner but Spurs were the more frustrated at the final whistle, with fourth-placed Liverpool now able to pull five points clear with a win over Swansea on Monday.

For Southampton, who stay 18th, this was a morale-boosting point gained in the battle against relegation and in particular for their manager Pellegrino.

The grumbling at St Mary’s has grown louder in recent weeks and with Marco Silva available after being sacked by Watford hours before kick-off here, the atmosphere could quickly have turned sour.

The south-coast side are without a win in 11 games, the longest drought of any team currently in the division, but a gutsy, aggressive display earned the players warm applause as they left the pitch.

It was five years this week that another Argentinian with no Premier League experience faced early scepticism on the south coast but, unlike Pellegrino, Pochettino was able to marry tactical change with short-term results.

Tottenham, however, painfully missed the creativity of Christian Eriksen, who was ill, while Hugo Lloris’ virus gave Michel Vorm his first league start in goal since April last year.

Southampton made two changes as well. Mario Lemina and Manolo Gabbiadini came in - Gabbiadini having scored in only two of his 25 games this season.

Vorm was tested twice early on, first holding a fizzing shot from Gabbiadini and then rushing out to claim after a promising Southampton break.

Saints’ were punishing Serge Aurier down Tottenham’s right and it was from there they took a surprise lead as Ryan Bertrand’s cross was turned into his own net by the sliding Sanchez.

The hosts’ advantage lasted only three minutes, however, and it could have been fewer had Eric Dier’s shot not crashed against the post. Moments later, Kane ghosted past Jack Stephens to nod home Ben Davies’ corner.

Sissoko and Stephens both spurned chances when free in the box while Kane impressed when he pulled the ball out of the air and pushed it through Cedric’s legs.

Tottenham were out early for the start of the second half but failed to shake off the loose touches and misplaced passes that continually stalled their attacks.

Erik Lamela replaced Son Heung-min with 18 minutes left and Kieran Trippier came on for the injured Aurier - but there was little sign of either side breaking through until the final five minutes.

Lamela, teed up by Sissoko, saw a finish blocked by the flailing leg of Stephens before a glorious chance fell to Saints substitute Michael Obafemi. He had only Vorm to beat from eight yards but skewed wide.

Kane almost had the last word in stoppage time but his angled shot fired just wide of the far post and agonisingly out of reach of the leaping Lamela.
