:hccc: šŸ Hampshire Cricket!

Gatting in for Dawson on the strength of a couple of recent 50s for the 2nd XI.

Quite surprising news imo, particularly as I’d forgotten he was still here.

Wonder if SO5one of the few to see the start.

Yup - wished I hadn’t. Play about to restart

55-4?

Shocking week.

There may be trouble ahead…

Oh hang on, it’s here already!

Hants 176 all out, only bright spark being Gatting 64 not out.

Haven’t been able to listen to commentary today, so does anyone know whether the pitch was tricky?

… or was it just another abject batting display?

Could have written the script from the first over. When Adams walked back at 11.02 I said to my Middlesex supporting friend that we’d be lucky to bat the day. And so it transpired. Don’t know why, but we’re not actually very good at the moment

I was hoping that this thread would be a pleasant jaunt through the highs and lows of Hampshire’s season but after our fourth successive defeat there are far too many lows for my liking and it’s hard not to feel despondent.

What depresses me the most is the news that Dawson is going out on loan. It’s hard to believe it was only a few seasons ago that people had such high hopes for young Hampshire cricketers such as Dawson, Woods, Griffiths, Riazuddin, Briggs, Bates, Vince, yet all of them to a greater or lesser extent have failed to live up to expectations.

Were they overhyped or is there something wrong with Hampshire’s development policy?

Ooookay, anyone for ā€˜cricket’?

Wish I could - weather looks good, and it’s about time we broke the losing run.

I haven’t made a Rose Bowl game yet this year, although have had three days at Lord’s (T20 & first two of CC). Will probably make next Friday’s T20 hopefully

I’m gonna head off in an hour or so down to Hampshire for my first match of the season.

Not holding out any great hopes after recent events, but, I’m really looking forward to it nonetheless!

Someone once asked me: Halo, why the hell do you like cricket?

My answer was simple: I haven’t got a fucking clue

… and nor, it seems, do Hampshire after a fifth successive defeat!

Hate to say it, but I’ve a feeling that our golden era in the one day format is over :slight_frown:

Disallusioned by the Welsh Test and Toby, I’ve just remembered to check on the latest score from Worcester.

Won’t be doing that again in a hurry. I’d sooner listen to Florence.

Yeah, in cricketing terms, the Hampshire season is rapidly descending into the stuff of nightmares.

As SO5 4BW has already mentioned in the Ashes thread, Hampshire gained a very welcome win last night in the T20 - after 3 successive defeats in this format.

I was very pleased to see Wheater post his record score of 78 and, seemingly, perform well behind the stumps with catches and 3 stumpings. I know a lot of Hampshire members are still unhappy about Hants getting rid of Bates - I’m pretty sad about it myself - but, hopefully, Wheater’s performance will go some way towards endearing him to certain sections of the membership; after all, it wasn’t his fault that the management decided to jettison Bates.

A good idea to move Wheater up the order - he can certainly bat. And a teenage spinner took a few wickets apparently, including Sangakarra!

Sad about Bates - I think if he’d averaged upper twenties with the bat instead of barely twenty Hants might have kept him. Wheater’s average is 37 by comparison.

Yes, SO5 4BW, you’re right, there can be no arguing with those stats: Wheater is by far the better batsman, and that’s what counts these days.

Still, whatever the future brings for Bates, I’ll always be grateful for large part he played in providing one my most thrilling cricketing moments, namely, the last ball victory over Warwick’s at Lord’s in 2012.

Definitely Halo - one of the best moments - and the game that turned my daughter into a cricket fan (still can’t get the boy interested, especially now he’s discovered beer and girls!)

Not many keepers would have been as smart as Bates for that final ball

I’m not surprised your daughter was won over to cricket by that match, SO5 4BW; I reckon it will live forever in the memory of anyone lucky enough to be at Lord’s that day.

Well, what a great way for Hampshire to start their 50 over campaign: a resounding victory over Sussex with Vince scoring a century and Dawson 73 not out plus taking a career best 6 for 47 - delighted to see Dawson come back strongly following his short loan period at Essex.

What a topsy-turvy season this is turning out to be: 18 points adrift at the foot of Div 1 but one victory away from a sixth successive appearance in the T20’s final - anyone going to the quarter-final at Worcs?

Mention also for good recent performances by youngsters Mason Crane and Lewis McManus.
