He doesn’t like Corbyn.

90% of this forum, love Corbun.

Great shame that Furball has left.

Apart from everything else, he and Bear made great, if unlikely, bedfellows.

That’s a bit blinkered that he’d rather hang around with dulldays, and assorted daily express types than the Corbyn crew. I still dip in and out of both. Variety is the spice of life…

The lack of debate on political issues on here sometimes makes me feel a little queasy.

Yeah, but you’re part of that problem. I’ve already lost count of the number of times that you’ve pushed on a point, or told someone that they were incorrect, were asked for clarification, before claiming that you don’t want to get into it.

That’s your right of course, just as it’s my right to point out that you’re

  1. Calling for more political debate (for others to engage in, presumably)…

  2. Not clarifying your own points.

At least The Other Place has that. Debate…heated debate sometimes…is good. It’s what democracy is made of.

  1. Favourably comparing the insult and one-liner zoo of the the Lounge with the mostly considered stuff people write here.

I realise that this post may come across as heated. Fear not, I’ve been patronisingly informed that heated debate is what democracy is made of.*

That’s conjecture. We don’t know that he would, because we’ve not asked him.

No I didn’t - I just said it was a low blow. Which it was given the debate was between a Labour voter and, er, a Labour voter. It was also quite ironic given how much the ā€˜nice squad’ were disapproving of Furbs.

That’s the second time you’ve called me patronising! But OK, fine. Your post doesn’t come across in the slightest as heated - your style doesn’t wind me up, though your PoV does sometimes, And you’re right - I am part of the problem. But at the moment, I’m in ā€˜don’t go there Lou’ mode whenever I see a debate I feel strongly about. For example, Russia bombing Syria. Doesn’t matter how much I want to react to some of the commentary, I stop myself in time. The way the Corbyn debate panned out is good evidence why to not go there. I’m definitely uncomfortable about how far left leaning this site is turning out to be (I’m just unsure at the moment if that’s just a consequence of Corbyn) so whenever a Barry or a Chertsey throw in another POV, I’m relieved even if I don’t necessarily agree with what they’re saying.

Look - you can call me patronising as much as you like, whatever. But so long as I’m on here, and as long as people make digs at Furball, I’m gonna respond (and as I’ve said before, I’m not defending Furball who I’ve never met, it’s the debate I’m defending). You can take it or leave it - you can listen and disagree, or you can take the piss out of what I’m saying, whatever. But I’m going to be really damned singleminded in my viewpoint on this one. Note, I didn’t start this, this time round.

Oh, and PS. I’m also aware that me saying this is pissing a few people off, and I’m sorry about that because I hate pissing people off, especially people I like. But…

It is, Halo - but at the same time, what would we do to accommodate him that we haven’t already? The chap is largely spoken of in reverent tones, got recognised and feted as the site intellectual as soon as he joined.

The only real criticism he got was when his posts failed to meet the billing, and even then, he managed to come through each exchange without attracting abuse.

Like you say, it’s a shame - but as I’ve remarked before, we don’t get a chance to deal with it. The first we hear is when someone reads about it somewhere else. Meanwhile, I get to feel like one half of a messy fucking divorce explaining to the fucking kids why Daddy has done the offs.

He hasn’t been banned, and he can re-log at any time. It’s a self-enforced absence aimed at proving a point, that you can’t debate on Sotonians, which has already been disproved several times over.

Lou, I’m confused about what you want. Is this site better than swf? Were they too right wing? You’re saying that this site is too left leaning but admit to pulling out of debates where your opinion could provide some balance. That doesn’t make sense to me. Chertsey will provide an opinion. I nearly always disagree with his opinion but at least its there. I think paps post did come across as aggressive, but I agree with him in so much as its difficult for you to complain about a lack of debate when you’re part of the reason it’s not happening.

Ps stating that 90% of the forum is pro Corbyn is conjecture.

If it was a low blow, then as referee, you’d already missed a ton of times when my opponent had hit me below the belt. IIRC, all that the ā€œnice squadā€ did was pull him up on his tactics. He didn’t have an answer for them, much like he never has an answer for any reasonable and detached set of questions about the stuff he has written.

I suspect the realisation that the shit wouldn’t fly over here is probably the main reason he’s left, especially when he can float the same arguments over at TSW and have the support of more than one cheerleader.

You’re doing exactly the same here. You’re citing the Corbyn debate as the evidence of why you don’t want to debate, but you’d reached that conclusion way before it ended.

I’m uncomfortable with a lot of the right wing points people make, but the solution is not to sit silently seething, making vague pronouncements that the site is unfit for debate. I generally put forward a competing opinion which hails from my bag of political convictions.

Look - you can call me patronising as much as you like, whatever. But so long as I’m on here, and as long as people make digs at Furball, I’m gonna respond (and as I’ve said before, I’m not defending Furball who I’ve never met, it’s the debate I’m defending).

I don’t agree. I simply cannot see how someone unable to defend his or her own position can simultaneously claim to be defending the principle of debate in general, especially when you’re laying a guilt trip on the ā€œnice squadā€ that stifled him off the site.

Also, your statement is not helped by the fact that I’ve never seen you disagree with him, even when he has been taking a disagreeable line. Specifically, I fail to understand the huge double standard whereby he is allowed to smear all Corbyn supporters as certain things, and people that call him up on those tactics are stifling debate.

You can take it or leave it - you can listen and disagree, or you can take the piss out of what I’m saying, whatever. But I’m going to be really damned singleminded in my viewpoint on this one. Note, I didn’t start this, this time round.

For all the reasons enumerated above, I disagree.

woah Lou he’s done a sexism on you! Fight!

For my money, tho I see frbl & pap arguing bout beard man and stuff, and couldn’t follow most of it, I always imagined they were quite enjoying themselves! Maybe frbl don’t like that he was having to argue with the landlord tho, i can understand that, i will often feign tolerance with pub landlord on his i.e. racist views etc, cos if I don’t he could at any moment call time on my after hours drinking & barmaid harrassment practices. RIP.

Lou should be pro beard-man tho like me tho, I’m surprised that she ain’t. Beard-man stands for taking money from the mouths of corporate scum-lords, and spoon-feeding it into the hungry gobs of subjugated pikeys, crack-whores & work-shy layouts, like myself, which are Values that I always imagined I shared with nice, liberal, Louise from Coxford RIP

I will explain what I want this evening as am on a deadline today. Can I just talk about life in general? It might get a bit navel gazing. There are lots of things I want!

My daughter is in a cheerleading team. There are lads on it. Who is being the sexist now, eh Bear? Stamping on male cheerleader dreams!

Totally, I was enjoying it too! It was an awesome debate and effort from both sides!

Papster, will reply later, your posts take a bit more thought!

Bollocks to RIP! I’m still nice liberal Louise, it’s whether Corbyn is Mr nice liberal that concerns me, and FYI, I’m still undecided. But there’s plenty out there to worry me.

Actions speak louder than words. I’m asking him here and now. I await the response. I fear he maybe sometime…
