Because…

Mate popped round yesterday for a beer & a chat.

Stuck him in front of the TV & showed him the 1st episode of Lucifer.

Now the mate is American and a big player in the local Gospel Church Community.

He was rolling around on the floor and messaging all his Krew that they had to download it and watch it.

That is all.

We just got the SyFy channel. Showing Stargate SG1 from the very beginning :lou_sunglasses: an episode a day.

Two series on that Killjoys which seemed to be pretty low budget & with CGI that kept being repeated (kind of like Blakes 7) and a storyline of Bounty Hunters. Hot Chick lead but that was about it.

Dark Matter - looked more promising - bunch of peeps wake from Deep Sleep in space in a broken space ship with their memories wiped & a 7 of 9 Clone robot. (Nothing else I can add else it’s spoilers. At least it kept me interested enough to wait for Ep 2 next week.

Rush Hour - I really thought I would hate it. How can you have a TV show Rush Hour without Jackie Chan. Have to say if they had called it anything over than Rush Hour it would have simply been shit, as it was it never stood a chance. The Chinese Cop - wise cracking LA deadbeat Cop does have some moments in it but the acting is very not good and the whole same ā€œGrassā€ every episode was done to death in Starsky & Hutch so why would anyone find it interesting 30 odd years on. Worth watching an episode if only to see how BAD attempts to remake franchise TV/Movies can actually be. (It got pulled before the season ended in the US)

Still very little coming through on HBO or the global Beeb/ITV channels that makes us sit up and notice unfortunately. 5 year old Silent Witness (yawn) is about the best.

For those Arabic speakers amongst you, you may like to check out the Arabic GoT - Sultan al Harem (or Harem al Sultan whatever) it is a massive production and has spawned a touring Costume Exhibition and everything. (and no, unfortunately even with sub titles I couldn’t follow it)

Just finished series (just for you Bletch) 2 of Gomorrah. Fucking seriously good TV. Like a more brutal Wire with subtitles. Shit hot.

Not sure if I have mentioned Vikings before (Tuesday nights on History Channel) but although it is a poor man’s GoT it is well worth a watch. Especially if you like feisty shieldmaidens! Great episode this week when they attacked Paris.

I watched the first episode of Roadies last night, which is the show Cameron Crowe (Amost Famous), has made about, well, Roadies. I don’t know if it is Good Shows, but it is quite watchable. It reminded me of shows like The Newsroom, and Studio 60 on Sunset Strip, which are character pieces about people who take their jobs far too seriously.

Edit: Boobs in this show. One teenage groupie fucked a middle-aged security guard to get a backstage pass, which I found bit Morally Questionable, but the show just like shrugged + lolled, like it was OK, which was strange in this day+age I thought.

This isn’t really a good show recommendation. It involves a TV show, but everyone in the world has seen it, and it needs no introduction. However, it came by way of another. One of the punchlines on this week’s Mock The Week was ā€œAngela Lansburyā€, voiced over a picture of Andrea Leadsom.

Young Adult #2 is in the room, so I start to explain who Angela Lansbury is.

ā€œI know things, Dad!ā€ she exclaims, defensively. That’s my girl.

She told me that she discovered Murder She Wrote is near constantly played on TV channels around the world. When she discovered this, it was actually on the telly on one of the oldie channels.

She didn’t watch it, so I explained the basic premise.

ā€œShe’s a murder mystery writer that travels around America, staying with friends or relatives, and she has shitloads of those. Every time she goes somewhere, there’s a murder which she then solves. Many of these places are small towns or other lowly populated areas. There’s a good chance that in many of them, this would be the first murder for a couple of decades. It’s really statistically unlikelyā€

ā€œMaybe she’s the murderer, Dadā€

That’s my girl :lou_sunglasses:

They might have gotten serious about actually doing comedy.

None of the shit their comedic performers did was any good.

I’m watching Stranger Things, the new Netflix series starring Winona Ryder. I am four episodes in, and very much into it. Set in the 1980s, the chain of events kicks off when a young boy goes missing. The drama focuses on those left behind and their efforts to find him.

This would include his family, a single mother and his elder brother - and in an independent investigation, three of his buddies that defy police advice not to go out looking for him. I won’t spoil too much, but it’s a lot of fun to watch, and it feels like a lot of good 80s movies, particularly Poltergeist and E.T.

I give it two thumbs up on the basis of what I’ve seen.

I’m watching this now, i think it’s brilliant. It’s like if Spielberg had made a tv show in the 80s, and got Stephen King to write the script.

I’m giving it big ticks in particular cos:

a) The child actors aren’t annoying, punchable precocious stage-school brats, they seem like real kids

  1. Weird things are happening, but i feel like we’re gonna get a Good Explanation.

  2. There’s only 8 episodes.

IX) The title credits are worth the ticket price on their own, they are so deliciously retro!

Best show of the year, hands down.

Edit: Tks for recommendation pap. You have partially redeemed urself for foisting shite like Gotham onto the frm

I’ve seen the lot now. Great show which does everything well and doesn’t outstay its welcome. If I had a criticism, it’s that some of the stuff is probably a homage too far. I have no problem with likening it to ET, for example. Once scene plays on a famous ET scene completely, flipping it beautifully.

The title credits are very reminiscent of John Carpenter’s old scores, that old dark synth thing. I would add another big 80s influence, and Bear will know it when he sees it, but it’s neither Poltergeist nor ET.

btw, I have never tried to make Gotham out to be more than it is. I just can’t help apologising for what it is.

This sounds good Bear, you’d better be right.

Try Mr Robot (series 2 on Amazon). Weird but good. Having spent time in NY the bonus is seeing genuine NY location shots.

Another one to watch out for is Lucifer - think it was mentioned earlier.

And another one is The Man In The High Castle. Def worth a view.

Amazon original (and other outlets) are pissing all over Sky, BBC, ITV & seems to be the way forward for TV.

Goddamit - missed Series 3 of Plebs - arrrrggggggghhhhhhh!!!

I’ve only seen half a season of Mr Robot. Didn’t mind it but just stopped watching it.

First time I tried to watch Man in the High Castle, I actually nodded off. The first few episodes are pretty slow. It demands a lot of your attention throughout. However, it slowly builds into something excellent. The way they employ Nazi methods in American society, and crucially in the lives of the characters, is truly chilling.

One of the best parts of the first season is Rufus Sewell dogmatically applying the rules, only to fall foul of their indifference later on.

Finally! Someone else has caught Lucifer

Brilliant by Tom Ellis with the affected Brit thing and the droll one liners. S1 finishes here this week.

Think this last year US TV shows have been much better. Possibly HBO riding the GoT wave & Amazon seem to have been very clever/aggressive in buying the UK rights.

SyFy channel are showing Eureka. An oddball but entertaining piece of fluff about a small town set up to be a home for genius scientists.

2006 vintage so probably got swamped by Fringe. Good filler tv & ran for 6 years so couldn’t have been sh1t. I’d call it quirky but only 1/20th the quirkiness of Lucifer

I like the character of Lucifer. I like how he’s not Evil, he’s just doing his job. I like how he’s more honorouble than normal ppl, i.e. he doesn’t tell lies or try to trick on ppl.

I didn’t like making it a dumb Police Procedural show tho. That was v.dumb, so I Stopped Watching.

Yeah but the joy is finding out he isn’t the geezer that makes peeps do bad things & his Job descriptoin is to punish peeps. Hard to see how they could put that into any other Capeshit format tbh.

So I guess you missed the Pizza Boy & Britneys gag…

Just heard that Penny Dreadful has been cancelled after series 3. Shame as it was turning out to be quite special. :lou_sad:
