We must be of a similar vintage (although obviously different breeding). I passed my test, first time, four months before the 66 win.
I was having lessons during the World Cup and I passed on Friday 30th September…there was bunting in the streets of Lymington and joy was unconfined.

More recently my stepson was so keen I took him for his first lesson at 00:01 on his 17th birthday. He passed his test a week later.
I remember that sort of thing was a badge of honour and newsworthy back in the day -
These days I shudder given the lack of experience and vastly busier roads and motorways- with assorted dickheads giving new drivers no quarter 
Wonder how much the sponsor paid for that
When did he take his theory test, can they do that before 17?
