I agree there are plenty who pass the test but aren’t fit to be on the road, particular motorways.and many awful older drivers. But I have to say my stepson is one of the best drivers I know. Advanced driver. I happily lend him my motorhome.
There’s an art to driving, it’s not just a useful tool, you have to enjoy it.
I agree about dangerous older drivers but that’s probably because they were dangerous younger drivers. Like a lot of kids I thought I was indestructible but luckily I escaped without injury when I had accidents, not all my fault. Haven’t had an accident for forty years.
It helps to drive old “classic” cars, you’re all too aware that you’re part of the crumple zone, you drive defensively out of necessity. My classic has just lap belts and you know what they say about those, in an accident they keep the body with the car.
Can sort of see that.
That being said we used to have an old dear in the village when we lived down the road in Oxshott who was a widow and although she had passed her test years ago only started driving when her husband died. Hadn’t driven in years & couldn’t drive for toffees. If you saw her coming you got out of the way. Think she had her licence taken away.
My next door neighbour has had his car sold by his wife recently. He’s got early onset dementia and after a career in Motorsport thinks he’s back in his old career (but driving at about 10mph around the local roads) All a bit sad really.
You peaked with the spiderman one Phil, know when you’re ahead
I agree with that. I know far too many older drivers who are really terrified of driving but don’t want to give it up. And a lot of it is experience and keeping alert and in practice. In a non-Covid year I still do over 15000 miles, in three different vehicles, including a 7.5m motorhome and a souped- up sports car. I still occasionally drive minibuses and still enjoy a track day if I get a chance.
I haven’t had an accident since I rammed the High Commissioner for Mauritius’s armour-plated car with a mini, in Park Lane, in 1970.
So yes, it’s about enjoying driving and keeping your skills active. Good drivers have a natural awareness of everything going on around them and anticipation to go with it.
Yeah I was coming out of a restaurant to get in my car and an old geezer was manoeuvring his delivery van. He was backing towards me and kept coming. I banged on the side of his van and shouted but he kept coming and ran into the back of my car. I ran around to confront him, he was taking off his headphones. I said if I could get hold of those you’d never see them again you fuckin’ idiot.
He look shocked and came around to look at the damage, luckily the impact absorbing bumper looked OK. He said I’ll pay for any damage, yeah I know you will but tell you what…JUST GO before I break your neck.
Euphemism?
Rear ended?
He mis-spelt the second word!!
No euphemism. I was trying to impress girlfriend driving down Park Lane, pointing out the sights. The HC stopped. I didn’t. Rear-ended is correct. Chauffeur got out, laughed at my somewhat rearranged front and his unmarked tank, shrugged and went.
Rear-ended is correct.
Ha!
