šŸ“½ Films I have seen

To be honest I didn’t get to the end of it. Just didn’t grab me. The book probably ruined me watching the film. Good effort though imho

Absolutely remarkable. Works better if you can understand the German as a fair amount of the nuances are lost in the subtitles - As Polski said, you cant enjoy it in the literal sense, but its an incredible piece of film making. It was always going o be different from a a film made in 1930, but I think it delivers its anti-war harrowing message with conviction and honesty. Watch, think and thank fuck it was not you.

The tank scene is just…

Re subtitles versus understanding German… there is one scene which is made all the more poignant because of its association with a nursery song every German child will know, which is then adapted a little to fit, after they have stolen the goose and eaten the goose… which causes the ā€˜jaeger’ (hunter) to come after you with his gun…

Not sure I could watch it, my grandpappy was never found.

You might think, how can you relate to someone you never knew. I thought that too but contributed to a small memorial exhibition at Abridge Village Hall in the way of Photographs and documents for the 100th anniversary of Armistice Day.

I visited with Lady Slowlane and was choked at the little tableau they had put together for the five men of the village who had died.

It was an emotion that had taken me totally by surprise.

Very moving - interestingly, I listened to Mark Kermode’s review of AQOTWF, and he mentioned that after seeing the original 1930s film the then League of Nations suggested it should be shown in every school, in every land, until the word ā€˜war’ was lost from all dictionaries…

Why on earth would you do that!!

Indeed :smile::smile:

Distant memory of Kermode and Mayo, didn’t Kermode constantly bang on about ā€œthe two best films ever madeā€ being Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, and The Exorcist?:unamused:

It appears that others have noticed

Critics and viewers heap praise on All Quiet on the Western Front

Surely must be in contention for some Oscars

It’s the Daily Heil

Love the fact they say ā€œcritics and viewers are calling for it to get an Oscarā€ The hyperbole in the article is amusing. As much as I didn’t watch it all I can see it is cinematically good

But they don’t get how Oscars are voted for and awarded.

But imho it has a chance as foreign language film, but also Cinematography

I think it’s already submitted for the foreign language category

Yep hence…

In other significantly less highbrow news

The Playbirds - Netflix

1978 very very very soft porn by today’s standards.

Terrible acting & some relatively well known faces - but ignoring the script itself, a snapshot of the late ā€˜70’s

Sort of a cinematic version of the hedge porn we used to find as nippers, but sadly now disappeared with the modern media

Old times.

Its a real shame foreign language films never get nominated for the top acting and directing awards… because I would say it is certainly deserving of some of them.

It’s very US English-language centric tbf - Everyone else is starting from behind shite English language films

I’ve never minded a foreign language film. If movies are about escapism then getting to see a glimpse of something incredibly unfamiliar is one of the best ways to achieve it.

If I had to pick favourites it’d have to be Jean de Florette and Manon de Source. You’ve got to watch them both, in order.
