:covid_19: 😷 šŸ„ Corona Virus the thread for all your fears ā“

We had anti-vaxxers protesting in Lightwater on Sunday. I was shocked by how much I wanted to inflict serious physical injury on them.

Some friends of friends are anti vax- their son (19) went and got vaccinated much to their anger -daughter then got Covid, pass it onto the the parents who have both really suffered - son was fine

Now they are apparently fishing for sympathy and finding the well very very dry

Wearing a mask during the pandemic has allowed me to silently mouth ā€œyou fucking cuntā€ at people getting drinks from me, but I’m finding it hard to remember not to do it now the masks have come off.

I can tell you, it’s making Communion fucking embarrassing.

Looking like all arrivals into UK will have to quarantine for 10 days if unvaccinated- included Brits returning from green countries

Traffic light systems to be dropped

Vaccinated to be allowed to travel without restrictions

Pretty much what most of EU has done all summer.

Makes sense.

The ONS reckon half of those claiming long Covid are just suffering from normal day to day maladies

I’ve been wondering if any data has been collected on the number of cases arising (possibly) from fans attending football matches?

I’ve thought about it a fair bit, but even as a statistician I can’t really think of any realistic way of asseiing risk.

Don’t they have an ā€œxGā€ for that sort of thing?

xC?

You can now travel to Pakistan as it is off the red list…

1st good news is fully vaxxed do not need to take a test before flying to UK - so that saves 35 quid. And day 2 PCR will go sometime to be replaced by Lateral Flow test.

Might become affordable to get back for a game before Christmas

Ok. For amusement and discussion, my estimates.

The starting point is the estimated current number of active Covid infections in the UK. 680,000. Out of a population of 68,000,000 which conveniently suggests one in 100 people are infected at any point.

To extrapolate that to the likely number of infected people in a crowd of, say, 25,000 at St Mary’s it’s tempting to say 1% of 25,000 is 250 cases, but that is wrong because the number of active cases is derived from those who are ill and know it’s Covid and those who have tested positive. We know that about 1/3 of cases have no symptoms and unless these are testing regularly, they won’t show up. So that suggests the real number of active cases is probably higher. Allowing for non-sympomatic tested positives, a reasonable estimate is 1 in 70 of the population.

But if you have tested positive for Covid and/or have symptoms, you should be isolating and not going to a football match. Agreed, some will break that rule, but hopefully not too many. So the real figure to consider in estimating the likely number of cases in the crowd is those who have Covid but don’t know it. On the basis of the above, that’s about 1 in 250. Add in the rule-breakers and my guess is 1 in 200 of the crowd could be infected, or 125 cases - not that high.

Then the impossible questions: how likely are you to be near any of those and what’s the chance of transmission? Here’s a rough suggestion. In any seat, I think there could be about 10 other seats theoretically close enough to you to pass it on, but they won’t all be occupied and you’re in the open air, that’s probably an over-estimate. If you get into a scrum in the concourse or the toilets, there’s clearly more risk, but still only a 1 in 100 chance that the gents on the urinals next to you are infected.

And even if you are close to an infected person, if you’re double-jabbed you’ve got no more than 30% of the infection risk. And of course it’s by no means certain that you’d get breathed on enough for transmission - some experts reckon 10 mins of face to face contact is the danger line.

Obviously, far too many variables there for a definitive answer, but I don’t think any calculation comes out to a risk of more than about 0.25%, which doesn’t worry me.

But I’d love to see some actual figures.

And my 2 mates caught it at the Man U game.
You forgot the concourses…
UK Gov. Grant Twatts
Cvnt.
We will remove the need for a PCR test on arrival for double vaxxed later in October.
WHEN? Ffs?
Wtf is the delay in announcing a date for?

I said there’s extra risk there. I avoid completely, walking straight through.

Interestingly a lot of people seem to be swerving games as evidenced by the gaps in the crowd last week.

More tellingly is that I’m being bombarded with emails from Saints saying games for the next 3 home games are all on general sale already.

Desperate times for Saints but not all teams are equal

Definitely true. Massive gaps for the WHU game.

I know several fans who have jacked in their long held ST’s due to general apathy. Not Covid, just pissed off after the last 5 years.

Maybe I’ll go when I’ve got my booster shot…if we’ve won a game by then.

Given the site demographic perhaps we could argue a group senior deal, with @JxgrSaint getting a discretionary Junior ticket?
