:covid_19: 😷 šŸ„ Corona Virus the thread for all your fears ā“

I’ve been self-trimming the beard. I’m glad it has been appreciated.

That’s not actually me or @scotty, though.

It’s the queue for a Jim Davidson gig.

I’ve seen the queue for Roy Chubby gigs.

Couldn’t get entirely offended by him because from the off, he presented himself as a grotesque and someone not to be taken seriously.

I wouldn’t sit down and watch any of this shows, like, but it did always intrigue me that he was the mayor of Royston Vasey.

I’m not sure if the League of Gentlemen were paying homage or simply putting him in his right place

Apparently the EU are asking the US for some AZ jabs

I hope the US say fuck off, we are sending them to Australia

Knowing that lot, doubt it was homage, but they liked his name for the town and just felt it would be funny to have him there as well.

I had close friends who loved him back in the day and followed him on the club circuit. They got divorced and one of them is still a fan. Haven’t spoken to her for a few years.

problem with this ā€˜humour’ is not from the PC angle, but from his audience feeling their POV was being validated…

It’s a comedy performance, not a lecture.

Tell that to the audience

Doesn’t make it right tbf.

Me & Mrs C_S used to squirm when the inevitable Video/DVD got brought out after an evening in the boozer. The odd chuckles aside, it was always WTF on the car journey home the next day.

It’s there to confront or reaffirm - just not my cup of tea. Not a great fan of tea either tbh…

Unless Roy Chubby Brown was advertising his gigs as ā€œA Lecture on the Truth of Thingsā€, I think they’ll probably have an inkling that they’ve bought tickets to a comedy show.

The man is infamous for being what he is, but as I’ve said before, marketed himself as a grotesque from the start.

I think people can watch horror movies without becoming killers and that someone can go to a Roy Chubby Brown gig without goose-stepping out of it.

Far more damage is done by the British media every time they put that plank Tommy Robinson on telly and pretend his pitiful band of followers is representative of anything.

Maybe we should get Jim Davidson ba k doing his ā€˜Chalky’ impressions? the point is we ALL know the shite grotesque comedy of Roy Brown advertised or not, but if uou dont agree with his POV (comedy obviously), why would you go see it?

Having unfortunately seem one of his videos, there is plenty of ā€˜agreement’ amongst his audience on his ā€˜views’

So, you’re a fan then?

Well, let’s see. My all time comedy heroes are:-

  • Bill Hicks
  • The Pythons
  • Alexei Sayle
  • Stewart Lee
  • Rik Mayall
  • Chris Morris
  • Armando Ianucci
  • Steve Coogan
  • George Carlin
  • Ricky Gervais
  • Christopher Guest

What do you reckon? Resume of a Chubby Chaser?

A simple ā€œnoā€ would have sufficed. No need for a list to justify.

Not looking for beef - I wouldn’t have had you down as a chubby chaser anyway tbf

I’m more interested in keeping things free. Besides, the problem, as posited, is that attending a Roy Chubby Brown will validate their opinions.

It’s a slippery slope. Under today’s no-context moral compass, even something like Harry Enfield’s Mandela skit is going to end up getting banned.

You give up Roy Chubby Brown and you’ve changed nothing, except create conditions where comedians can be taken off the board for what seems to be an ever shifting definition of what constitutes offence.

Furthermore, I don’t think people are as easily moved or sated as my pal @Map-Of-Tasmania. People may well get caught up in the moment, as any football fan that has gone from relative rationality to mindless tribalism will attest.

The act is literally based on a series of foul mouthed taboos. The man made his career on saying the unsayable and those that say ā€œyou can’t say thatā€ have been his best publicists.

To answer your question directly, no, I am not a fan. If I were I would have sat down and watched his videos, or gone to see him. I have not done these things.

I would not want to stop other people from doing these things though, not because I like what is being said, but because I believe in a free society, people should be able to say and hear whatever they want.

I am a slightly bigger fan of the idea that we can tolerate his ilk without losing our shit.

No, he’s a cunt. I am not demanding folks are stopped from watching his shit (You do tend to draw extreme conclusions to try and enhance you POV), I am questioning the desire and motives of those that want to. Big difference

so should we put old Jim back on Tea time TV?

And that’s all you needed to have said @pap

We get it.

One of our mates had RCBs videos when we were teenagers it was appalling then and it is still appalling.
I worked 2 of his gigs. Thankfully could do the cloakroom but never did another one after that.
It wasn’t funny or amusing just racist, misogynistic bile which his audience love. His very small audience numbers wise. They were not sell outs at all.

I ask honestly, what does this questioning peoples’ motives business gain you, and what are the essential differences between that and generalising?
