So mass testing, which despite throwing billions at it, has proved beyond our Government and their newly loaded mates, is now to be dumped on schools. Luckily they have three whole days to magic up the staff and appropriate space.
Assuming they pull it off, the only outcome is that they will be accused of ruining Xmas for thousands who test positive and then have to isolate for the next 10 days
See comment Christmas thread⊠itâs a sorry state of affairs, but given how the government has tried to make mileage out this crisis and also the whole associated cronyism, I donât have any sympathy. The Only way to really manage this would have been through following the scientific advice from the outset with cross party backing, ensuring procurement was transparent and fair, and with all following the rulesâŠ
All following the rules. Cool! Could you point me in the direction of the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow too please?
Yes they would. As Iâve said before people see that there are not many deaths from Covid and believe the social media spin that âitâs no worse than fluâ so donât care.
Also not many people will know people, who are their direct contact, who have had Covid so, again, donât care.
I would probably say they would - you might get a different bunch of people breaking the rules - but the rules would still get ignored by a significant number
I think we would need a pandemic with a mortality like Ebola or Rabies to get everyoneâs attention
âMoved from Christmas threadâ
Testing to start after christmas. Hence three days to arrange it for start of next term.
Ahh - gotcha
There are some funny comments from teachers on twitter along the lines of oh, we were going to use all our extra space and money to build a bomb shelter.
âFollow FloggerââŠanother one for the kids.
That one Iâve never heard of, but I do know that Jimmy Edwards had a programme called Whacko. So mâlud, thatâs my educated guess.
Italyâs death toll in recent days has surpassed the UKâs as the highest in Europe and puts it in fifth place worldwide. It has recorded 65,857 deaths, according to Johns Hopkins University in the US.
Officials from the national statistics bureau ISTAT said total deaths for the year could top 700,000 - something that the organisationâs head, Gian Carlo Blangiardo, said had not happened since â1944 when we were at the height of the Second World Warâ.
An adviser to the health ministry has now called for a total national lockdown to avoid a ânational tragedyâ. Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte has banned travel between regions but there are calls for stricter measures.
âWe are in a war situation, people donât realise it but the last time we had this many deaths, bombs were dropping on our cities during the war,â public health expert Professor Walter Ricciardi said in a broadcast on Tuesday.
âWe have the highest number of deaths in Europe,â he said. âWhat more does it take to make people understand what needs to be done?â
He has not chance - we had the highest death toll for months but our population are still fuckwits
Its not really fair to look at absolute numbers - the death rate per million is a much better measure of how its been managed
That makes for some really grim reading especially for the Belgians
It is but the true figure is excess deaths, how many of the Belgiumâs deaths were due to age and health conditions?
similar to ours - we record Covid as cause even if they were on deaths door anyway
Its the died from vs died with argument
Here the total death rate is a record.
Only now they are realising the impact of not being able to visit Doctors/have screenings for other illnesses.
Yes Coved deaths are a high % but even taking g them out the numbers are at a record high
Aye, the rules of recording death certification have been relaxed since April. Even if a medical practitioner thinks the recently deceased (for whatever reason) had symptoms of covid but had not tested positive, then they are advised that covid is appropriate to put as a cause of death.
We have to be careful with the this data though. Yes it could be that the total number of excess deaths in 2020 could not be that much worse than in a bad flu year. But by accepting this we are potentially accepting this increase every year from now on, as opposed to a bad flu year which occurs on average every 5-7 years⊠in effect, for UK, suggesting we are happy with an additional 60,000-80,000 additional deaths every year. In addition as mentioned before, we have no way of predicting how this virus might mutate if âleftâ to continue its natural evolution, possibly becoming more deadly, or effecting younger populations.
If someone changed the highway code in such a way so that we had an extra 50,000 road deaths a year, there would be a public outcry to change the rules back⊠yet we seem to happy justifying breaking the rules because its âonly the oldâ⊠how do folks who put their selfish desires ahead of the rules justify this to themselves is what i would ask?
Probably the same ones that use their mobile whilst drivingâŠ
