:covid_19: 😷 šŸ„ Corona Virus the thread for all your fears ā“

Decent bit of reading here:

Madrid is going to be put in lockdown today. Last night 3,000 Athletico supporters were in Liverpool, walking around the city centre, drinking in bars etc. If it had been the home leg they wouldn’t have been allowed to go to the game, yet we allow them to come here with no restrictions, no tests, no precautions taken whatsoever. It is pretty much nailed on that some of those 3,000 would have been carrying the virus, spreading it around in the bars etc. Madness. Soon the government will be announcing measures that will restrict movement, will close schools, a ban on large gatherings etc, which should have been done weeks ago. It is almost as if they wanted the virus to take hold first though. Inaction is a political decision, not a medical one. The de facto Prime Minister Cummings and a few others in the current regime in Downing St have too much of an unhealthy interest in eugenics and the like for my liking.

And the bottom bit is they’ll be raring to go on Saturday as quite frankly collectively as a nation we’re selfish cunts.

Singapore is very authoritarian and Singaporeans are used to doing as they are told

Singapore have amazing ability to track and trace contact - but only because they have a ridiculous level of cctv

Singapore has implemented self isolation procedures backed up with massive fines - north of $10k if you don’t follow the rules. It is also enforced and monitored

I know that several people have had the permanent residency stripped from them and barred entry permanently for breaking these rules. They are unable to return to the country despite owning property and having family there - can you imagine us doing that and the Guardian embracing it?

Timing is everything here - It is about public perception and peoples readiness to accept constraint on their lives

If we had put strict measures in place say last week, there would have been a load of howling in the media about the govt overreacting, breaches of liberty etc etc. However now those measures will be more palatable because the panic has increased to a point where the general population are more accepting of those constraints.

Here is a man missing the whole point.

It is not the fear of the virus alone that is causing carnage in the travel industry at the moment, it is the rapidly changing nature of the responses and the fear of arriving somewhere and getting stuck OR being put into Isolation for 2 weeks.

Travel Insurance Companies are removing Coronavirus cover.

I have a German mate in Florida working at the Players Tournament who will now be stuck there as he cannot afford to buy a new ticket and Lufthansa haven’t yet confirmed they will rebook him on BA OR whether he will actually be able to transit through UK having now found himself in a hot spot.

Anyway World Business Collapse and this is meant to get us flying again

Dear customer,

As a valued customer of KLM, you trust us to not only take you where you need to go, but to do so safely, comfortably and responsibly. Today, as the world comes to terms with an unprecedented health scare in COVID-19 (Corona virus), these values are more important to us than ever. Therefore, I’d like to take this opportunity to share some insight into the different steps that we are taking to guarantee that our flights continue to meet and exceed the highest standards of safety and hygiene.

Safety & hygiene
Before each departure, our planes are always thoroughly cleaned and disinfected. These procedures are designed to the highest standards and include both your personal space - tray tables, seat armrests and headrests, seatbelt buckles etc. – as well as communal areas such as the galleys, carpets and lavatories.

Once in the air, our cabin crew works diligently to keep our planes clean. The air in the cabin is continuously refreshed with outside air and our hospital-grade HEPA filters are 99.99% effective in preventing the spread of airborne bacterial and viral organisms such as COVID-19. And in the event that a passenger does begin to show symptoms, all of our flights are equipped with special Corona-kits and our crew is trained in containment measures.

This strong focus on hygiene extends to our entire organization, including catering services. Ingredients are fresh and sourced locally, and our catering crew is also trained to meet the strictest guidelines for hygiene and safety. This short video provides more information about hygiene at KLM.

I fully understand the hesitation many people feel at the moment when deciding whether to book a flight or not. But you can feel secure in the knowledge that KLM has taken every precaution necessary to protect your health and the health of your loved ones. In this emotional time, you can be assured that we are guided and consistently act by fact-based, circumstance-driven decision making. On a daily basis, we work closely with the top experts at the World Health Organization and Rijksinstituut voor Volksgezondheid en Milieu (RIVM) in the Netherlands.

No change fee
I also understand that your concern may not be about your journey with KLM, but about the many unknowns about the situation on the ground at your destination. That’s why you can book your KLM flight with the confidence of being able to change your booking without a change fee. We are in constant touch with all the relevant authorities to adjust our network as required. This means that we can immediately respond when new travel restrictions are announced. For the latest information on flight status, please visit our travel advisory page or use the KLM app and let us keep you posted 24/7 with push messages.

In 100 years of operations, KLM has faced many challenges and always emerged stronger. We were able to do so because we put you, our customer, at the heart of our operation. With that commitment in mind, I am confident that we will overcome this challenging time as well. As you know 33.000 KLM staff will go further to recognize your concerns and take care of you. Thank you for choosing KLM, and safe travels.

Sincerely,

Pieter Elbers
President & CEO KLM Royal Dutch Airlines

Oh they’ve dropped. You should hear my Doctor Claw impression.

I’ll get you next time, puberty!

And yes Pap, acutely aware I very occassionally notice a slight sore throat, a slight ache in my shoulders and a generally feeling only about 95%.
Either I already have a mild dose OR we are gonna become hypochondriacs…

Aye. Felt a little hot last night and didn’t know whether it was the beer. Been fine today, but just seem amazingly conscious of everything going on.

Worrying. My lifestyle could easily be a substitute for ā€œunderlying health conditionā€. I work fucking hard and I party even harder.

Oh and the cynic in me spotted…

I elbow bumped for the first and only time last Friday night.
