I would suggest everyone takes a look at this data again (if already does so). It simply shows the total numbers of deaths over time across both the age groups and the various participating countries vs expected or average numbers.
What this allows us to do is not get confused by ârateâ or decline on rate etc log vs non- log graphs and also removes differences in the way countries have reported deaths from either COVID-19 associated complications or underlying disease. It also removed political spin and bullshit. What is interesting is:
The periodic winter increases (bad flu years) would appear to kill more people overall (area under the curve represents total number of deaths over that time period) than COVID-19 to date (this may change by time this is over)
COVID-19 has a much higher rate of infection and death - indicated by steep curve
Previously, post bad flu years, there has been a period of lower than average deaths, as many of the most vulnerable were taken out sooner than expected, but these would potentially have died within the next 6-12 months
The impact of social distancing and isolation is clear⊠had we not done this, then that first âpeakâ would be higher and still increasingâ - what is not clear is what happens when lockdown is relaxed⊠will we see an escalation again? a second or third wave? There is currently no evidence that those who have had a mild case have any immunity so we simply donât knowâŠ
