:brexit: Brexit - Deal or no deal

Understandable. Perhaps that’s just where they want you.

The simple fact is that the EU has never allowed a democratic expression against it to occur. France and the Netherlands both voted the EU Constitution down. They ended up getting it anyway via the backdoor of Lisbon. Ireland rejected Lisbon, and had to vote again until they did not.

Same thing is happening here. The EU took a posture long ago that it wasn’t going to create favourable conditions for us to get out. The backstop is the embodiment of that position.

Now, realising that I might have been a bit thick in my responses to @Goatboy, I checked over what Merkel said in her speech. I’d concede that 30 days to find a solution isn’t really going to work, but theoretically, that is a shift away from the backstop being an indelible feature of this arrangement.

There is no easy way out for us, but then there is no easy way out for the Germans either. Johnson is not going to agree to the backstop. The French won’t agree to its removal. If we do leave on no deal, the EU are going to lose the equivalent of the smallest 19 countries in the EU, and imo, are going to lose a tremendous amount of face because they’ve spent three years over-egging the catastrophe pudding.

Perhaps instead we’ll just have to ratify our new constitution…strangely a lot like the US Constitution including the much loved second amendment. :lou_wink_2:

We don’t really have one, though. It’s basically the cumulative effect of all legislation, init.

Taking back control eh!

Confused.

Did the EU ban this sort of thing or something? Do you know who owns our football club?

Mark Steel sums up pretty accurately the state of play at the moment. Life imitating satire!

Shamlessly stolen from the daily mash and the only one of five reasons you need to know Brexit is good

After Brexit, we’ll only really need a border to keep out bad foreigners, such as Eastern European gangsters, Islamic terrorists and the French. These rascals can be easily caught by sharp-eyed patriotic police officers and sniffer dogs trained to recognise garlic.

Boris going to suspend parliament so that they can do the Queens speech (perfectly legit and happens all the time) and as a added bonus knackers the remainders chances of passing legislation

This is going to be one of the most vicious fights in British political history

BBC News - Government to ask Queen to suspend Parliament

Fairs fair. Remainers have tried every trick in the book to thwart Brexit - they can hardly complain when the Brexit faction do likewise

I get the impression that this govt are one step ahead of the remain camp

The opposition finally came up with a “strategy” yesterday and it’s been immediately put into disarray by this move.

No confidence vote next with JC as PM
If BJ wins - game over
If BJ loses - general election and I reckon yhe Tories will be back with a majority and no more Greive / Soubry

Corbyn has utterly fucked this up, and I mean utterly.

I will not doorstep the next GE. Not because I don’t support many of the Labour aims. It’s just that there is no fucking point. A complete and total waste of effort.

So Queenie rubber stamped it (not that she had a choice). The internet is melting down with politicians trying to find more and more doom related adjectives to describe today’s events. I fully expect to see hair tearing, clothes rending and self flagellation before the days out.

The internet is absolutely brilliant for generating mass hysteria

If nothing else at least this is finally coming to a head one way or another and it needed to because kicking the can down the road would solve nothing.

In or Out - get it done

It’s amazing, isn’t it?

Parliament will be shut down for an extra four or five days. They don’t generally sit during conference season anyway. They’ll be back on October 14th.

If BJ had prorogued Parliament until 31st October, there might have been a point to be made.

I know the Twitterati are creaming themselves at the turnout in London.
But we’ve been there before, the moneymen running this shitstorm dont give a shit.
It is pointless unfortunately.

There is only one way the public can regain control and that is to hurt these people in their pockets. That requires real brains not emotions.

So want to make an impact? Find ways to hit back financially, otherwise plan for No Deal fast.
