Are they going to find ANY consensus?
Or we just going to wake up after the last extension has expired and say no we don’t mean that…
Stop using we. It’s May.
I came across a lovely thread on Twitter where some people are boycotting anything from Europe and buying local fruit and veg only. I don’t have an issue with that as it would probably be better for the planet. But they failed to remember a significant number of EU citizens pick the fruit so they may struggle to have their British fruit and veg soon.
Bloody Johnny Foreigner…coming over here, taking all the job we don’t want.
Good thread , click on the tweet to expand it

How does that work in practice.
If the 27 say no short term extension, is May obliged to cancel article 50?
I don’t think this is complete as he likes to make out… if no deal is as many believe a disaster… we won’t be rejoining simply because I doubt there would ever be a majority who would accept schengen, the Euro and greater integration. Brexit has shown us that as a nation of voters many seem to believe that being British and independent and ‘Great’ and all that (utter worthless bullocks imho) is more important than prosperity and our own welfare…
… we are a nation that is personified by the knight in Monty Python’s Holy Grail… the limbs keep flying off but it’s ‘just a scratch’… the delusion that this what makes us Great and better than those Europeans… the old people will be happy to rip up their gardens and plant spuds and reminisce about the good old days and the war spirit… whilst the food banks queues grow… meanwhile those middle income earners will be on first Eurostar the to Euroland as the right job comes up taking their taxes with them …
… but we have Farage and Boris et al who gave us our country back to help the poor.
The ‘being British’ stuff is all a load of bollocks anyway. It appears to me that being British is about driving in a German car, with Arabic petrol from an American petroleum company, to an Irish pub for a Belgian beer, then travelling home on a Dutch run train or bus, grabbing an Indian curry or a Turkish kebab on the way, to sit on Swedish furniture and watch American shows on a Japanese TV powered by electricity from a French company whilst complaining to your wife about “those nasty controlling foreigners in the EU and how we are taking back control from them”.
All very true.
But take a step back for a moment.
ASEAN is an association of Nations, it sets some joint ideals and trade agreements.
Fast forward 15 or 30 years, would the people of Singapore then be comfortable being in a Federal State with China and Malaysia for their prosperity?
The thing is it all depends on what that means - what Decisions are made, what laws passed and the impact these has on those nations - which IMHO is what such decisions should be based on… what ‘we’ seem obsessed with is WHO and WHERE is making decisions not WHAT they are or impact they have…
The irony that the Disenfranchised North think they will be better off with a London centric government without EU ‘interference, without EU employment protection etc( which to be fair Corbyn has as one of the points he wants secured to support Mays deal) is as obvious as it is sad. People who have already got the toughest lot believing this has to have come from somewhere… and it is illustrative of how human beings are programmed to think on such short timelines… we struggle to see the futility of it all because we can’t think in terms of centuries let alone millennia… people remember what was good about the past, and forget the shit that went with it… so we mistakenly believe it was better back then … and as with many things we are too selfish to think of what the future generations might want/need, thinking only of today.
It makes some very bold assumptions, for instance, if there is a disastrous No Deal brexit then he assumes we would automatically apply to “rejoin” the EU. Bollocks, that.
China doesn’t do federations, you’re either part of it or your not.
Singapore was part of Malaysia briefly, they left for many of the same reasons we seem to be leaving the EU. Worringly they then became an autocratic one party state!
As George Galloway says, the European Union is increasingly looking like Hotel California. You can check out, but you can never leave.
I really can’t see this doing anything else apart from providing tremendous succour for those on the far right, across the continent. The AfD are already riffing on it.
The European election results are decided by proportional representation. If enough people vote for the far right, they’ll get in. I predict a huge protest vote in the UK contest, propelling pro-Brexit parties into the European Parliament in unprecedented numbers.
The EU Parliament will then, more than ever, be a circus of demagogues in training. If you thought it gave Farage a platform, just watch and see what happens next. STV is not a pure expression of democratic will, but compared to FPTP, it’s close enough.
These elections are going to be a Europe wide referendum on Europe, like never before, and I don’t think we’ll like the results.
Did you get an email from Labour asking if you’d consider being a candidate for MEP elections?
This is the real reason the Government and Labour oppose this, the remainers will have no room for complaint as hey its democracy right? When we have fascists and anti abortion christian zealots at the door it’ll all be good, I despair.
We join and them parties can campaign to leave on their manifesto or new parties form, its messy but it’ll be peaceful or an awfully lot more than we’re going to see.
Not sure, but I did get an email asking me if I’d like to be Merseyside’s Police and Crime Commissioner. I had a long hard think about it and came up with two conclusions.
- Yes, I think I’d very much like that
- But I’d spectacularly fail the vetting process
Personally, I don’t like the job title. Police and Crime Commissioner?
Surely a conflict of interests?
I got one for MEP but jlaw didn’t so just wondered who it was targeted at. It would be one way of filling my part time hours.
I got the email. Deadline is noon tomorrow. We should get on that gravy train if we can, Nik.
While it still lasts
We could patrol the corridors of Brussels and Strasbourg like it was 1990-91 Cantell.
And it’d pay a lot fucking more
Well I usually do my applications late but haven’t the time to check my social media to see if it would bring the party into disrepute. Shame as we were good at corridor patrol.
