Just to add a bit more colour
So Cox has earnt ÂŁ6m in 16 years of being an MP
He is charging approximately ÂŁ1000 per hour so last year aside he is averaging 300 hours a year
Wonder how that compares to others ( the ones keeping quiet no doubt)
The question here is not how much he is paid but how much time is acceptable to spend on other work outside of being an MP
It should be like UC. Any extra monies earned are deducted from their tax payer funded salary. If other monies exceed salary they must resign.
May be there is something in that - at least refunding the proportion of salary that was spent on other things
It has to be on a time basis though ie a backbencher can spend x hours a year on outside stuff, be that charity work, working on the wards or advise a tax haven
They should also not be allowed to âworkâ for other Governments.
I would allow it to the extent that it does not impact the UK or itâs interests in any way - may be have a system where if it did you can fine the MP 5x the money earnt
Also, if the cunt is earning ÂŁ1000 per hour why is he claiming 49p off of the tax payer for a carton of milk?
If MPs didnât have second jobs, I would assume many of them wouldnât be MPs. Not sure if thatâs a good or a bad thing?
You would either get very rich people like Goldsmith etc as they donât need any money, or none redbrick University types.
This smacks of deflection tactics/ desperation by the Conservatives
Dead Cat time
I see the Labour MP has already leapt for the mental health defence
I think that consulting roles for firms isnât necessarily a bad thing (assuming that they donât use their influence for their clientsâs gain). In the same way as several MPs still practise as doctors - it helps keep them grounded and in touch with what is happening in the real world.
Iâm not sure that 30 year veteran MP without any outside interests, who has done nothing but follow the PPE Spad MP career is able to appreciate what teaching a class, managing a ward or running a business is really like.
Health service, education, charities, legal aid work. All these would be acceptable.
This is so simple itâs staring us in the face.
No second jobs. 80k with London expenses is more than enough for a job that many people would be privileged to have.
Fuck the fuck off, everything else.
ÂŁ80k pa doesnât get you the best people, therefore who can hardly complain when you get narcissists or the inept in power
Personally I would rather pay them a lot more, ban the second jobs and attract the brightest
Also set a 25 year limit on careers as MP so we can weasel out some of the old duffers
If the govt really doesnât want to lose a particular talent then they can shove them in the Lords
I agree. ÂŁ80K is around what a mid-level manager gets in many professions/organisations. If you want good truly competent people you have to pay for them. It also leaves them open to financial inducements from âsponsors or donorsâ, who then have unhealthy levels of influence.
Who wants a mid-level manager as an MP?
There are plenty of truly good competent people volunteering so money doesnât come into the competence equation for me.
You need two things to do any job well, care and competence. You can find plenty of people with those attributes for ÂŁ80K + every conceivable expense.
This isnât a mid-level position. Itâs a position that comes with tremendous honour and responsibility. If an MP canât get out of bed for that and 80K plus expenses, they should not be an MP.
100% agree.
But you wonât get the best people in role - itâs the issue we have now. Make it ÂŁ150k per year then youâll get some decent people, but ÂŁ80k is not much to attract sufficient talent.
A lot of those people volunteering have a) other jobs that support them at which they are paid highly b) are retired from high levels jobs.
If you want competent (or better) ministers then the pool they drawn from has to be of higher quality
Itâs 80K plus every conceivable expense.
