So that’s someone deterred by the fact that we say fuck or cunt without a swear filter, and yes, I realise that deters people. Should I introduce a swear filter or constrain freedom of speech to accommodate this lady?
It’s quite clear some threads are hijacked for mischief or bullying, which amuses the one, two or three involved, but turns off everyone else, doing nothing for the success or reputation of the forum.
At that point I would suggest you have to step in and be Mr Bastard and wield a big shitty stick - not very often, but often enough for people to know that there is a line not to cross - a line which was clarified when two stroppy bitches recently signed a suicide pact and wrestled themselves into a corner.
That has been the traditional approach, and one that has served us well in many respects. The problem is that not everyone takes that sort of interaction well, people overpersonalise and it becomes about the moderator decision rather than whatever offence caused it. People end up leaving the site over it.
Don’t become the new age parent who allows little Tarquin to express himself through abusing people - if the sensitive little chap won’t behave, give the fucker a good kicking once in a while.
I’m not. The vocal minority don’t get any more votes than anyone else, we’re still running a relatively tight ship when it comes to signups, and I’m not worried about co-ordinated action. We can look into voting irregularities in cases of suspected bullying, and we can detect “packs” if they ever appear.
I trust the majority of this community to do the right thing and have the power to detect people that aren’t. We’ll still PM people with concerns _before _anyone is sent off. 9/10, that’ll be enough.
When it isn’t, people get an automatic say and a vote in the final outcome.

A few things:

Pap and Bletch have always given me the opportunity to return. I was in self-imposed exile, and in regular correspondence with both of them, as well as a number of other members.

I never realised that my mate Barry was such a delicate flower, and that what I said (even though the post after I said I admitted it wasn’t true) would still sting and shock him to the core. I think we should all take it upon ourselves to be kinder to Barry, and that when he calls us “rape-apologists”, “sexists” or just plain threatening to beat us up, we should take it on the chin, as we don’t want to be the reason he spends his evenings crying.
So Barry, I apologise for calling you a nonce. I hope you can take this olive branch, wipe your tears with it, and stop being such an over-sensitive little pussy.
