I don’t think that racism in a party should be something to make political capital from, BUT at the very least if one side does it then the other side should be used as balance. Here’s some balance.
Not only does Boris get kicked out of Micharl Evis’s spiritual home, openingvthe door for comparisons with Jezza’s appearance on the Pyramid Stage, he gets filmed NOT KNOWING the words to Wheels on the Bus at the primary school.
It’s almost as if someone is sending him out to fail on purpose.
Nationalising part of BT (which was not on the list in July) will be hugely expensive for sure. Giving away broadband for free will then remove the major revenue stream that might just justify the nationalisation cost. Asked what this would mean for other broadband providers, John McDonnell said they would have to “get on board” (whatever that means) or else they would be taken into public ownership too.
I heard a 30 billion figure. So scrap paying to look after the yanks nuclear missiles and we could pay for it three times over and still have 10 billion spare.
It might be a shit idea, but if nothing else it shows up the madness of what we pay to store someone else’s WMDs.
Potential mass murder, or free internet at a third of the cost. Seems quite sensible when you look at it that way.
Is that the only choice though? I heard £40 billion initial cost, plus at least that to keep funding the business if its being given away for free. That’s more than the amount spent on social services, or housing, or a host of other things more important than free broadband in every home
Costs will have to be shown, but it’s another utility nowadays, so i’m all for nationalising it, which would at least bring down costs to the end user and make it easier to give for free to those that need it.
As an election announcement, it’s definitely dangerous ground, unless they’ve looked into it from all angles. Just reading the thread @Saintbletch posted shows the amount of people coming out with the old lie about where money comes from, which is a bit sad(like the internet version of a dunces cap), but shows how deep the lies are embedded in people’s minds.
So although a potentially good idea, unless they have some great insight and industry experts to back up any figures, it might just end up as another bad headline.
Has it been announced by the party, or just some bloke?
Cheers Bob.
Interesting that there lots of screams of “can’t be done, to expensive”, but not a murmur about Sasha claiming he can do it 5 years earlier for the change in his pocket.
“Prime Minister Boris Johnson has promised £5bn to bring full-fibre to every home by 2025”
It would seem the tories and their media are going for the old lie about money again. Maybe they should read this.
Mate I don’t think Boris is saying he will nationalise part of BT, or fund the cost of giving broadband away to everyone for nothing. I think this is the estimate (which may well be similarly understated) of the infrastructure costs to allow broadband to be supplied to rural areas etc. Very different
Full fibre broadband for everyone for £5b?
I’ve had a quick read up and according to the governments own study Corbyn is correct to the tune of £12b in savings.
I had a look at the paper and it does say there are benefits(potential problems as well). There is a limited amount of countries to compare but the Australian and Singapore models seem to be the closest, at least from the little i have read. It’s a bit weird that it mentions density of population and land mass as a reason for Singapore’s success, but fails to mention the opposite for Australia’s troubles. Almost like they don’t want to admit the possibility of it being workable (7.2 if you’re bored).
Sorry mate. You’ve just inadvertently used Boris and Promise in the same sentence.
Remember in Discourse you can edit your posts.
Whatever you think of Labour’s announcement, it’s no more fanciful than the current (and previous) Prime Ministers standing up and promising high-speed broadband for the whole country when the Broadband infrastructure providers are currently private companies.
It’s mental to promise to deliver something when you can only ever hope to influence a private company.
I mean, would it be responsible to give a private company (and its shareholders) £5Bn to roll out high-speed broadband and for them to then enjoy the revenue from that public-funded broadband forever.
“He was just promising you the option”
How can anyone take seriously anything “Boris” promises? On his radio interview this morning he told four bare faced lies in as many minutes. Corbyn wants to abolish the army. Corbyn wants to do away with home ownership. Corbyn would hold another referendum on Scottish independence next year. The Conservatives have not offered inducements to Brexit party candidates to step down. Plus a few other questionable claims. No policy announcements, just slagging off and lying about Labour. He is the liar’s liar. he has now described Labour’s Broadband announcement as a “crazed communist scheme”. The same nonsensical language as when the Tories described Ed Milliband’s plan for a cap on energy bills as "Marxist’, before adopting it two years later as party policy. When “Boris” gets caught out with his lying he just grins, and then blusters and waffles. Sadly, Conservative voters just lap it up.
Great idea that, the lies would take up both sides though. Perhaps they could have one of "Boris’ " catchy slogans emblazoned across the nose.
FUCK BUSINESS.
That would be a good one.
