I didnāt, but theyāre not remotely the same thing.
PS Now is a streaming service. Input latency ahoy. Itās a consequence of them choosing particularly wacky architecture for the PS3, and it not being cost effective to do anything else but stream.
GamePass allows you to download games and run them natively. The only PS service that offers that is PS Plus, three games a month, usually at least a year old.
Microsoft is basically doing Netflix for games. Sony might be able to offer up lots of games on a subscription, but they still mandate that you go through Sony hardware.
I thought MS were crazy to put their exclusives on PC when they first announced it. In a Netflix for games context it makes sense.
Stock shortages do not affect their ability to sell GamePass.
ZX80 for screen jolt every time you manage to press a key.
I did mean to build a poll. Iām glad I didnāt.
I ended up going for the Series X first. I know I said I didnāt need one because I already have a PC, but after spending much of weekend rediscovering the One X itās not just a PC replacement. The back compatibility is not just present. Itās brilliant on some stuff.
The other big reason is budget. Iāve just done short of Ā£500 on a console. Nice to stay that side of the psychological divide, which I wouldnāt have done if Iād bought a PS5 and a game. Ongoing costs will be much lower too.
So the Series X arrived on Friday. Havenāt really played it that much because I was in Southampton at the weekend, but have filled it half up with either GamePass stuff or games I have bought in the past.
Itās smaller than I expected it to be. Think posh bottle of boxed whiskey and youāre about there. The thing is also the quietest modern console Iāve ever owned. You just donāt hear it. There is heat coming out of the top, but again, nowhere near as hot as I thought it would be.
Load times are excellent - they make a real difference to OCD gamers like me that end up retrying something a lot. Game-hoppers are well supported with Quick Resume - the system will keep around six of your games in a suspend state allowing you to easily resume a game.
Havenāt yet seen the best of it. Havenāt got a 4K TV with all the bells and whistles yet, so am slumming it on a 1440p monitor. Even so, feels like a big upgrade from the One X.
Looks like the traditional wisdom of first generation machines being the worst might be a bit dumb in the case of the PS5.
Wouldnāt normally happen, but shortages of components have forced the firm to source alternative parts that are making models sold now louder and hotter.
The PS5 can now accept upgraded internal SSD - I do resent having to upgrade the bastard so early - Particularly when it will cost £200 for a future proof drive -
One other thing I saw re the latest firmware update is that they managed to squeeze a couple of % performance upgrade in certain scenarios - interesting that they are able to do this thought software
Yeah, I think theyāve fucked up on the storage from a consumer standpoint. Should never have launched with 825Gb standard (only found out it was that low recently) and even though the XBox storage solution is proprietary, itās also a piece of piss. No fucking about with the backplates, no opening the machine and no heatsinks. Just plug it into the port at the back.
Also, the only improvements youāre going to get now are through software.
Both of these consoles arrived half-baked in terms of their core code. The boys over at Digital Foundry were a bit confused because Control, which initially ran like shite on the Series X, suddenly started performing loads better without being patched. Core update, affecting everything for the better.
Iāve got it in my brain that I want a Series X now but stock seems to be very limited. Series S are availableā¦
Given that I donāt have any X-Box games on disc, donāt intend to play BluRays and donāt have a UHD telly that I can play games on is it really worth going for the Series X.
Should I just get a Series S and spend what I save on a disc expansion pack?
I did think about getting a Series S but ultimately it was the low storage that prevented me from getting one. I figured by the time Iāve paid out for additional storage itās not much more just to get the Series X.
General rule of thumb is that Series S is an excellent machine for HD sets. I may well end up buying another one for the house at some point.
