How does the TUC arrive at £2.85 bn for nationalising the energy companies?
That seems remarkably cheap and less than the market cap of even one of them
This smells like the John McDonnell - tough shiit method - ie we are just taking it and giving the shareholders pence in the pound
I am sure the shareholders will buy into this scheme and not tie the govt up in knots for years in the courts
Could well be an under estimate.
Lets times it by 10.
So that’s 28.5 billion. As a one off payment. Still cheaper than Starmers plan and it will only have to be paid once.
They’d be all over it like a rash especially pension schemes that invest heavily in the firms that give best returns for their members (us).
Nationalising power doesn’t buy you cheap wholesale gas - starmer would still have to subsidise it so it’s more like 60bn
Nationalising it is not a short term fix to solve the current crisis
It might be the right long term solution. I think I would want to see the power companies taken into ownership by a govt investment company to fund pensions - let them compete but let the dividends go to the taxpayer that way
Nationalize gas production, storage and sale?
We seem to be exporting plenty which arguably could be better used at home
( yes, I know that’s simplistic view)
The gas production bit of British Gas, BG group is owned by shell who bought it 6 years ago for £35bn
We are not buying that anytime soon
Devil’s advocate- Just take it over. What would they physically be able to do?

I reckon we could 'ave 'em.
I think all inward investment into the UK would run for the hills

Nope, but it does give the government and public a fucking big residual income that can be used to invest on a national basis.

Your boy has pulled out a 33pt lead - he might be boring, he might not be left enough but he is looking like the next PM
I am beginning to think the Tories could do with a spell on the subs bench. They are still fighting like rats in a sack
It’s all as if people cannot accept that there side lost in politics these days, be it Brexit, US presidential election, Tory leadership
So much for respecting democracy

I just wish we had some substance rather than the “stay silent while they fvck up” strategy

His predecessors have not found that a successful strategy

Starmer saw what happened when Kinnock opened his big mouth. He’s not going to make the same mistake
