Senegal are working their way through the familiar series of recriminations that accompany any disappointing tournament exit. They were knocked out, somewhat unfortunately, by Belgium despite being many peopleâs (OK, mine) idea of a dark horse.
It has now emerged that their team doctor, Abderahmane Fediore, was unfit for purpose, according to an allegation from the president of the countryâs federation earlier this week. The team doctor âtrained as a gynaecologistâ, said Abdoulaye Fall. Not a very helpful background for a menâs World Cup.
âBased on the feedback I received, the players were not sufficiently reassured about being supported by him,â Fall said. The Senegalese âAssociation of Sports Medicine rejected the allegations as âunfounded and defamatoryâ. All too late for head coach Pape Thiaw, who was sacked last weekend. He is now receiving recruitment advice from a milkman and counselling from a butcher.
