Weāll, now weāre talking Americana, my specialist subject, Iāve really woken up to this thread!
Anyone come across Robbie Fulks before? Heās very country, tried to make it in Nashville, then wrote this song. Bearsy might like it coz itās got swear wordsā¦
Well, if weāre talking Nashville, Iāve always liked this one by Waylon Jennings:
And this, along with the great Willie Nelson, is just lovely:
To my shame, I have to say that before today Iād only ever heard one Neko Case song - a live version of Train from Kansas City which resides on one of those CDs you get from music magazines such as Uncut. Itās a brilliant song, as are the others posted here. Seems to me that Neko Case is a singer Iād love to hear more of, so if anyone would like to recommend their favourites among her LPs, Iām all ears. Not literally of course, that would be horrible.
When it comes right down to it, though, you just canāt beat a bit of Gramā¦
After the untimely passing of Chris Squire of Yes I have been listening to an album that he made with ex Genesis guitarist Steve Hackett under he banner of Squakett. For those with a taste for 70s Prog Rock there is some good music on here and the playing, as you would expect from two virtuosos, is excellent. For those who dont know anything about Prog Rock and want to dip their toes in, I would recomend The Yes Album as a starting point. Prog got a bad name during the punk era but since then even Johnny Rotten has come out and said he like a lot of that music, it just wasnt cool to admit it. There is some wonderful stuff out there from the likes of Yes, King Crimson, ELP, Peter Gabrial era Genesis etc. It is not all 20 mins guitar solos. In fact it is mostly ensemble playing of the highest quality.
ā¦as are you, 'slowlane.
I honestly didnāt know she was associated with Calexico. Iāll have to dig into that a little more.
Isnāt it great when artists you like, validate your approval by working with other artists you also like.
I remember Billy Bragg and REM collaborating in the early 90s - you canāt beat a good Bingo Handjob.
Currently pretty obsessed with Kate Tempestās album. She was, without doubt, one of the highlights from Glastonbury last weekend. The girl is so incredibly talented. I think live, her Spoken Word stuff just really shines through.
Sounds daft I know, but I just canāt comprehend how many words she would have to remember!

Theyāre a great live band. John C sent me a picture of himself, Joey and Amparo when they were recording for āEdge of The Sunā in Mexico Cityā¦they have a lot of collaborations on their latest album.

Nice. I drove down from Tucson to Mexico City a few years ago. Went through plenty of the places namechecked in that song.
Reading that Mark E Smith pissed his pants at Glastonbury made me reminisce about a The Fall-loving boss (and landlord) I once had.
He was/is properly mental.
In hommage The Frenz Experiment is In Remembery of Nostalgiant tonight.
Just realised I havenāt give you anything from one of my all-time musical heroesā¦so hereās a short soliloquyā¦

From the I Want to see the Bright Lights Tonight album, If youāve got a half-decent hi-fi then this sounds stunning.
Love it.
Iām not an expert, Toke, but Iād say that was a return to form.
Reminiscent of The Clash in places.
Bit deep here but⦠Pete is the soldier -sent to Thailand to give up drugs. Thatās difficult of course, easier if you give him drinks to replace one habbit with another. Gunga Din is no doubt what he would have called the Thais that kept bringing him and the others beers. Paid to crack on and write songs to prove heās doing something with his life.
Givinā drink to poor damned souls,
Anā Iāll get a swig in hell from Gunga Din!
