We live in a crazy fucked up world!
Pah !.
At least you aren’t getting flying taxis any time soon
I like John Oliver, @fatso . Good scouse stock, even if by birth, he’s a West Midlands lad. He has pretty much the best gig going on the late night TV talk show circuit - he can say what the fuck he likes on HBO due to the way it is funded.
I don’t know how realistic it is to expect him to be able to change hearts and minds, but after a year of lampooning Trump, he hasn’t managed to do much about it. I can remember when Drumpf was a thing. And this is from a guy that has arguably got the US to change policy direction in the past.
Perhaps the John Oliver Effect (actually a thing itself) only goes so far.
@pap , I don’t know why you’d expect Oliver to change anything. He’s a comedian presenting an entertainment show. It’s not really his job to change things. There isn’t anything anyone can do to change things except assassinate the fucker.
It’s similar to thinking Russell Brand could have any sort of effect on voting in the last election.
Except I’m saying he’s had no effect on Trump.
None.
All he exists for right now is to make people like @fatso feel a bit better.
Better off doing an @intiniki and going to a demo or something.
That’s a completely different situation where something could be changed and a discussion was willing to be had. What are you thinking he could change with trump? To stop him lying to the media? How would he do that? I genuinely don’t know what you think he could achieve (or why he should be achieving anything…just because he encouraged a change once about something very different). Can’t he just produce a funny show that continues to highlight what a prick trump is? Maybe people won’t vote for trump next time?
He, along with a host of other “progressive” voices, thought they _could _stop Trump.
He doesn’t make me feel better, he makes me laugh. He’s a comedian, that’s what he is meant to do. I know you have previously struggled with the notion of comedy. Who are you telling to go on a demo? Me or Oliver? And why are you telling me or Oliver what to do?
I was watching a programme on the BBC news channel the other day (“Dateline”?). An interesting point was made there about trump, saying that he uses his press conferences to speak directly to his supporters. The collected panel were saying how there was now talk of not broadcasting these conferences live as they contained so many inaccuracies or lies. Imagine that, if the media decide they couldn’t broadcast the Presidents press conferences without fact checking them first. Can’t see it ever happening but is quite astonishing that it’s even been mentioned.
Surely all he is doing is pointing out the absurdity of Trumps statements, not trying to have a direct affect on Trump, but keeping the people aware of what’s happening, in a way that will inform a lot of people that wouldn’t otherwise be aware of it.
The effect will happen when him or someone else highlights one of Trumps fictional tales, in such a way that it makes enough people stop and really consider what’s going on in Trumps mind. In the same simple way that @pap has linked his previous effect on net neutrality.
We used to have comedians doing shows like that here. Do we any more, or was it deemed to dangerous to inform the masses that don’t follow politics?
Now there’s a thought! Trouble is those most likely to take down a President probably support Trump. John Oliver does his job very well and rips the shit out of Trump. Thing is he is probably preaching to the convereted. Same as used to happen with Spitting Image and Thatcher. Those of us who “get it” tune and and say right on. Those who support these people tune out or call “fake news.” Everything has its place, Lampooning tv shows, demos etc. You need to build momentum and hope that you bring enough floating voters along with you to make a change at the next poll. Trump supporters will not stop supporting him because of people talking the piss out of him on TV. If anything, their support hardens. What we have to hope for is the penny dropping with people who voted for him as a protest vote, and that is where the likes of Oliver can make a difference.
