He, along with a host of other “progressive” voices, thought they _could _stop Trump.
He doesn’t make me feel better, he makes me laugh. He’s a comedian, that’s what he is meant to do. I know you have previously struggled with the notion of comedy. Who are you telling to go on a demo? Me or Oliver? And why are you telling me or Oliver what to do?
I was watching a programme on the BBC news channel the other day (“Dateline”?). An interesting point was made there about trump, saying that he uses his press conferences to speak directly to his supporters. The collected panel were saying how there was now talk of not broadcasting these conferences live as they contained so many inaccuracies or lies. Imagine that, if the media decide they couldn’t broadcast the Presidents press conferences without fact checking them first. Can’t see it ever happening but is quite astonishing that it’s even been mentioned.
Surely all he is doing is pointing out the absurdity of Trumps statements, not trying to have a direct affect on Trump, but keeping the people aware of what’s happening, in a way that will inform a lot of people that wouldn’t otherwise be aware of it.
The effect will happen when him or someone else highlights one of Trumps fictional tales, in such a way that it makes enough people stop and really consider what’s going on in Trumps mind. In the same simple way that @pap has linked his previous effect on net neutrality.
We used to have comedians doing shows like that here. Do we any more, or was it deemed to dangerous to inform the masses that don’t follow politics?
Now there’s a thought! Trouble is those most likely to take down a President probably support Trump. John Oliver does his job very well and rips the shit out of Trump. Thing is he is probably preaching to the convereted. Same as used to happen with Spitting Image and Thatcher. Those of us who “get it” tune and and say right on. Those who support these people tune out or call “fake news.” Everything has its place, Lampooning tv shows, demos etc. You need to build momentum and hope that you bring enough floating voters along with you to make a change at the next poll. Trump supporters will not stop supporting him because of people talking the piss out of him on TV. If anything, their support hardens. What we have to hope for is the penny dropping with people who voted for him as a protest vote, and that is where the likes of Oliver can make a difference.

So it is an all out Muslim ban then.
Don’t suppose having Muhammad as your first name helps.
More likely he simply posted xxx is a moron on some Social Media Platform. Bish - straight onto a no fly list.
Oh wait, you mean you lot didn’t realise “The Establishment” read every single thing you type?

The Thought Police will be active before the Year End - you watch
“A Muslim teacher denied entry to the United States while on a school trip said he has still not been told why.”
Jesus, does he really need to be told why? It’s been all over the fricking news for the last few weeks.
You’d best make sure you don’t criticise any of Trump’s golf courses then…
xxx? Please name this moron. You must have a moron in mind.
Do people still use fb.
Muhammad Trump?
But there isnt currently a ban on Muslims travelling from the UK Cherts.
I know, but the fact he was stopped was because he was Muslim.
Disagree, quite profoundly. There are different types of comedian, as you well know. As a pure comic, I don’t really rate Oliver. He’s not a pure comic though. He’s part of a double-act, with the establishment, especially Donald Trump, playing the other side.
If he wanted to be a pure comic, he could be Tim Vine. His particular schtick is commenting on the political situation of the day. He’d have very tame material without it. You can’t say he’s not part of the political conversation.
Does that imply political responsibility? I’m not sure. However, comparing him with another psuedo double act, the excellent Jonathan Pie, I personally find Pie a more compelling and braver creation. Sure, Oliver’s going after the god-damn President of the USA, but who isn’t? I get the sense that people watch Oliver and think “job done”, as if the mere act of watching him say fuck in a British accent is enough.
Pie, by contrast, has a much wider range of targets, including his target audiences - and tends to drive debate that wasn’t there before.
Over a billion. It’s the world’s biggest social network.
That’s a lot of morons.
Still, i’ll never be lonely.
There’s always a positive, if you look hard enough(the mirror, for 1 in 6 of us).
I have a degree of sympathy with your point. I fondly remember the days when you needed a beard to go on the Internet. When “normal” people started arriving, you looked like savage hillbillies de-civilisin’ the place.
The situation continues in this state of tension.
While there are a lot of colorful murals along Dickerson Road, none is quite as controversial as a new one that appears to compare President Donald Trump to terrorist Osama bin Laden, who orchestrated the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks in the U.S.
“The Donald Bin Laden” is painted in red, white and blue block letters about 5 feet high on the back of 2245 Dickerson Road. It’s visible from West Fourth Street across the train tracks.
There is no signature on the painting, other than one that was already there for another mural painted just below. The painting has been visible for more than a week, but no one has publicly claimed it as their work.
The sign next to it says
Daisy’s Bin Laying $5.00 a dozen
which sort of takes the edge of I think
