US accuses Russia of weaponizing food in Ukraine war

This is a translation of a telegram message sent by Russian Embassy in London a few days ago which gives a bit more detail about the situation Russia are claiming exisits:

Embassy comment on accusations against Russia of creating a food crisis, May 20, 2022

The accusations of the Russian side that it creates a threat of a global food crisis by not releasing ships with grain from Odessa and other Ukrainian ports have nothing to do with reality.
According to the information of the Secretariat of the International Maritime Organization (IMO), at the time of the start of the special military operation, there were 94 ships and about 2,000 crew members in the ports of Ukraine. Now 84 ships are blocked there and about 200 crew members remain to support the ships.
At the end of March, Russia created a humanitarian corridor in the Black Sea for ships to leave the ports of Ukraine. It is 80 miles long and 3 miles wide. This corridor opens daily. Not a single vessel was able to use the corridor, although notifications of the corresponding intentions were received by both the competent authorities of Russia and Ukraine (for example, the Hong Kong vessel Joseph Schulte).
The Ukrainian side has consistently made it clear that it does not plan to take significant actions to secure its section of the corridor. In all ports of Ukraine, the highest “security level 3” announced by Ukraine is in force - a ban on the entry and exit of merchant ships.
This step is “complemented” by the fact that the Ukrainian military mined the ports and adjacent water areas. Mining was carried out so chaotically that there are no maps of the placed sea mines.
For a while, the Ukrainian delegation to the IMO claimed that all the mines in the Black Sea are Russian. Only during the briefing of the IMO Secretary General on April 12, the delegate of Ukraine confirmed the intentional mining of their own ports.
In fact, blocked civilian ships and their crews are hostages of the Kyiv regime and act as a “human shield”.
At any contact, Ukrainians link the exit of foreign ships from their ports with the cessation of hostilities and the complete withdrawal of Russian troops from the territory of Ukraine.
The Russian military could start demining the ports. However, Kyiv in every possible way evades any interaction, including with shipowners, to resolve the issue of the safe exit of ships.
Obviously, in the absence of a solution to this main issue, it is not necessary to talk about the export of Ukrainian grain by sea.

Why is this hard to believe? There is a huge amount of civilian testimony from Mariupol that Ukrainians were using civilians as human shields both in Azovstal and within Mariupol itself. Given that Mariupol like Odessa is full of pro-Russians why do you find it difficult to believe that Ukrainian nationalists would be unwilling to use them as human shields?

I’ve been following a lot of the Russian telegram military oriented channels in the last few weeks and I have to say I was shocked at how critical they have been about Putin, but maybe not in the way that you think. There is quite a bit of criticism that he has been far too restrained, that he should have invaded Ukraine far earlier, that he should be taking back the Baltic’s and Kazakhstan, Western Ukraine etc and moving for full mobilisation. I’m not saying this is anywhere close to a majority opinion in Russia as a whole but these views are definitely out there and in some cases they’re coming from quite influential people, so I would say be careful what you wish for.
