đŸ‡ș🇩 The War/Invasion in/of Ukraine

Fancy bombing the shite of a place you want to people in to live? Nice contrarian post though Pap, 8/10.

Don’t blame me. Blame ITV news.

You’re our man on the ground for Russian military advancement, finger on the trigger as they murderously inch their way forward, I hope when they’re retreating you’re also as quick?

It came from a mainstream UK news channel Barry.

This story is from the BBC

Now, are you saying all UK news channels are wrong or shouldn’t be posting or broadcasting this sort of news? Should we even be reading this stuff :scream:

Perhaps it’s an increasingly more frustrated and desperate pop at posters who aren’t following the Sanchez Party Central official view on the conflict?

Comedic.

Fuck me, marooned aboard a ship floating about on the North Sea

A couple of decent storms and they will be casting an envious eye at Rwanda

Didn’t the SNP have a look at the available capacity for housing them before deciding how many to let in?

I would guess their (ahem) logic was “headline first, thinking later”

It’s all gone a bit quiet on this thread. Bazza?

Currently on punishment duty in the Azov Battallion.

He made the mistake of saying “Putin is a fascist cunt” like fascism was a bad thing. Didn’t go down well.

Still true now.

I think I’ll give this thread a total miss until it is properly disinfected. What might have been an interesting exchange of views is just an awful thread. Possibly the worst I have come across since joining Sotonians.

It’s all well and good trying to take the moral high ground on this, but we don’t have it any more, anybody who watched Panorama last night, if they put their hand on their heart knows this is the case. British elite soldiers executing captured prisoners, many of them non combatants, handcuffed, shot through the eye and left like that for their families to find and give them some kind of funeral. Fifty of them in just one six month tour of duty, God knows what the true toll is. The moral high ground is like virginity, you can only lose it once, once it’s gone it’s gone. And we,(the West) have lost it. No amount of ‘my country right or wrong’ which is Barry’s mantra, alters that. This is why Putin, the shower in Myanmar, China, and all the rest of them can carry on doing what they do. And yes, us as well. This is why the rest of the world outside of NATO and their clients, in Asia, The Middle East, India, Pakistan, large parts of the world aren’t buying into the accepted narrative peddled by the US/UK/ NATO, they know that hypocrisy isn’t spelt ‘whataboutery’.

And this is the thing.

We have absolutely no moral basis to pontificate about how evil Putin is for invading somewhere when our own country has been involved in two full-on invasions and loads of other grubby involvements ranging from funding head-choppers to bombing strikes.

And yet, the victims of our largesse are not seen in the same way as the Ukrainians for a couple of reasons. First, there’s the whole racial element. There was a foreign commentator in the early days saying “these are people like us, with blonde hair and blur eyes”. The piece went around the mainstream media without irony.

It is terrible. War is terrible, which is all the more reason why we should try to understand the things that cause it. We all have absolutely no problem assessing conflicts past.

What’s harder is understanding conflicts present, because there’s always some nobber that believes simultaneously that it all started yesterday because our opponents have always been evil, and that there can be absolutely no contributing factors to the contrary.

Which is why it is a shame this thread was polluted

The pause looks to be over. Heavy fighting in a few areas - with Donestk (the city) and Odessa being the likely destinations of the Russians.

It does beg the question how far Russia is going into Ukraine. Most of the self-declated autonomous regions are under Russian control.

You’ve got to figure Odessa is a strategic aim - while it is a more diverse Oblast demographically, Russian speakers are a minority of about 30%. More about blocking the sea and getting better terms in the eventual negotiations.

Threatening or taking Odessa gives Zelensky a problem.
You could argue it becomes something Russia could give back in a negotiated settlement.
Unless they plan to obliterate the entire country

When you say we do you include the millions who were against the invasion, simply saying well we did so thats that is it?
What is your solution to the Ukraine invasion??

You don’t offer any.

Ukraine is yours and others proxy stick to beat the state and Government with, what is your solution to this?

Please. I don’t have to go to Ukraine to be able to criticise the government.

It’s not my problem to solve. At this point, I think it’ll get solved when most wars do. When people get around a negotiating table.

That will happen, it’s just the question of what happens in between that remains unanswered.
