Can’t be bothered to create a new thread and quite frankly it isn’t worth one. Here are some bullet points.
Experience vs youth - plenty of contradictions thrown around. They ask whether a player is better, not if they are experienced. But simultaneously point out that these young players (Broja was mentioned and I think Salisu was alluded to although not named) also get carried away with their own hype and get distracted. To my mind, a players mentality and maturity is a major part of their overall talent, not just how many keep ups or step overs he can do. Mario Lemina has great talent but is a massive bellend so he will amount to nothing. So the club want youth but then bemoan aspects that come hand in hand with having young players.
Broja was discussed in the above context and anyone still harbouring hope he may return should forget it. He was criticised by Ralph, reading between the lines.
Every club in the world wanted Mario Lavia apparently.
3-5-2: we are playing it because we concede too many goals and would be higher in the league if we conceded fewer Also, 4-2-2-2 is too complicated for new players to grasp quickly and 3-5-2 is more simpleton proof.
No problem with Theo and McCarthy. They’re just not very good. (My words not theirs).
Che Adams - Semmens says Everton links above are bollox and it categorically won’t happen.
When asked why he left him on the bench for two midfielders, Ralph just talked about Adam Armstrong deserving a chance because he scored in preseason. Provided no answer on leaving Adams on the bench but did say he ‘loves this player’. Clearly all is not rosy there but in terms of him leaving, it’s 50/50 I reckon.
Games where players look like they don’t give a toss - we’ve been told that absolutely is not the case. Which is probably more worrying that they can perform so abysmally when actually trying.
“Ambition” - Semmens talked at length about pride of staying in the league for 10 years. Then later, when questioned, denied the goal is to simply stay in the league. Either poor choice of words or an actual contradiction. Listen back and decide for yourselves.
But in order to ‘drive’ the club forward the stars need to align, Ralph will need to pull an absolute blinder and there’ll also be some flying pigs around too.
There was talk of the stadium/ seating arrangements and anti social behaviour but the club claim these measures are being imposed on them due to a rise in naughty boys.
That’ll do ya.
This was the most insightful and honest comment of the night though.
Saints interested in Lirola
Southampton are interested in Marseille right-back Pol Lirola .
The 24-year-old former Spain U21 international is among the options they are looking into as they search for cover to the injured Tino Livramento.
Kyle Walker-Peters remains the Saints’ first-choice right wing-back and they are keen for a loan option to come in as backup.
Lirola made 34 appearances in Ligue 1 last season and 17 more in cup competitions, including the UEFA Europa League and Conference League.
If they bring in another option then the south-coast club will allow Yann Valery to leave if he finds a suitor.
Valery played in the season-opening defeat at Tottenham in a right centre-back role and he is in line to feature again against Leeds this weekend.
Southampton are also open to bringing in another option at right centre-back before the deadline.
What about buying players who can put the ball in the net (not our own)?!
Eh? You’ve lost me, I don’t get that at all.
Defensive players who don’t score own goal (e.g. Salisu)
Y’all, I don’t know where to put this so this will do.
After going over to the dark side to have a read (first mistake I know!) and to a much lesser extent on here, the depression levels over the club are at fever pitch. I get being frustrated at all things Saints but talk about eating your young, figuratively speaking!
From what I can gather no player anywhere in the world is either a) in the Goldie locks experience zone of age/pl experience/ability or b) a “model professional” that would a) give a shit about the club or b) be actually good enough!
If you want the club to sign someone or literally anyone, maybe our expectations need to be tempered a wee bit as supporters. Again, get we all get invested and basically don’t want to be relegated without a whimper but far out, the way we all voice our feelings, for better or worse, need some reeling in!
Either that or we fulfil the outside perception held by many that we are cannon fodder for relegation every year! That y’all, is a bore! We are as deserving to prosper as the next club and I love Saints and want us to be the best we can be. Humans are hard sometimes.
Apologies if this comes across to anyone as a ranty dig, it’s not meant to be personal! Though a rant it probably is!
…aah, I get it. For one ridiculous moment I thought you were suggesting the idiotic notion that we might flirt with the idea of signing a centre forward that could score goals.
It sounds stupid now and I feel such a fool, but just for a second there…
Heaven forfend, why would we want a striker that scores goals (at the right end), are JW-P’s goals not enough on their own
I’m a bit of an atheist but see 1 Corinthians 13–11
I’m old enough to remember when they were in The Premier League. Centre Forward Roy Battersby was a bit of a bruiser donchknow.
Too many wrist-slitters over there.
Has always been the case!!
Obafemi mark 2?
And he’s missed some sitters already this month.
Wowsers! That’s an update and a half! At least from the club perspective
Have they appointed Bazza as head of player retention???
