We did try that but after switching on it switched itself off in an insolent act of arrogance.

Suddenly coming across signs that say “diversion ends”. Have I been on a diversion or been diverted?
Driving along and seeing an arrow pointing “diversion”. Is that me? Where to and where from?
If you have been on a diversion from it’s beginning it may be clear, but not to those joining the route after its start.
Having worked on major road works for some years before my adventures in sewage, it is so easy to do it completely right, but it just costs a few pounds more.
Proper signage on a £5M road scheme is peanuts.
