Cypriot flagged vessel, filipino / indian crew and Maltese employer

The Brits / Europeans will be paid minimum wage or more depending on rank

Have they changed the rules again because ferries running between 2 countries on regular routes had to be registered in one of the two countries and I cant see the cross channel ferries going to Cyprus any time soon

They must have done so some time back. I use Irish Ferries quite often and their ships are, IIRC, registered in Limassol and most of their crew are from the Baltic states.

You can bet your last buck that P&O will have had their legal team all over this to make sure they were covered before making the announcement and going ahead with the sackings and rehiring of slave labour. Likewise the government who it now transpires, far from being ā€˜shocked’, were in negotiations with P&O beforehand. Which of course is obviously really, as the Indian/Philippino/S American replacement crew who were on standby in coaches must have had visas to enter the country. Many sources are in no doubt that the government talked them through it.

CB is right, it is just the ratings who are on 2 dollars 80, but as you say, still totally wrong. On your other point regarding cruise ships an investigation in 2014 found that P&O were paying ratings on some of their ships as little as 75p an hour basic. Shocking really.

One the visa point - there are special rules for seafarers joining the vessel - they can go straight through without a visa

Correct this is Why I carry a Seamen’s book to aid getting through immigration when joining a new unit and before my visa is issued.

It’s alright it was all legal, and 40 staff (from the 800) are going to get compensation in excess of Ā£100k

Yeah I saw this - the minimum that anyone will get is £15k

Some are getting 91 weeks salary which is pretty incredible in todays day and age.

Still doesn’t detract from the callousness of how that it was handled, they wouldn’t have known any of this when they broke the news to them

ā€œ Yemen’s Houti rebels claimed responsibility for the attack, according to the Associated Press.ā€

Interesting how exactly they would have managed the attack given Saudi’s Arabia has been trying to bomb them back to the Stone Age
