Cute blonde outside a sunny Buck Palace
Going through the Brit Papers
Articles about The Meg & Harold.
And basically pointing out that IF they all care so little about them, why so many pages fullâŚ
But then you all know that
Facebook are have a fight with the Aussie govt essentially over media rights and the prospect that they will have to pay for content
They said they would block all news content on their platform in Australia
So far they have blocked the weather, domestic violence charities, health services / hospitals (great timing) and themselves - not a great look
Interesting to see who is going to win Big Tech or Govt - if facebook lose, its going to embolden the RoW
This seems appropriate:
Is this not good news
Or at least something a bit diverting?
A wow from me
Excuse the source - it popped up on my browser, however this is massive
Hopefully it will be the death of the gig economy.
As an IT contractor, I didnât mind job insecurity because the revenues covered it. At this end of the scale, making your staff do this is fucking scandalous.
Trouble is, what theyâll do is give them contracts for, say, 4 hours a week and then ask them to do more.
Driver goes on holiday all they have to do it pay them 4 hours work.
I get the gig economy because it works both ways, the driver can choose when they want to work etc. etc. and I can see a need for it, especially in the hospitality sector but there does need to be some protection.
There also needs to be some provision for people who do want to go the gig route!!
For example of lot of Nurses do bank work, which is effectively gig work, and use it to suit their needs i.e. when then want some extra incomeâŚ
Itâs more nuanced than simply âzero hours contacts are bad, hmmkayâ
Without wanting to seem agenda driven, if you look at the times when workerâs rights have taken giant leaps it has been during periods where employers have really needed them.
Right now, during the COVID crisis, supply and demand is actually working against those looking to get hired. Rates are on the floor in the IT contract market because supply and demand dictates they can be.
Youâd feel sorry for them, but only until you remember that this is just a temporary COVID thing.
During the height of free movement, this was the ongoing normal situation for any worker at the lower end of the scale and none of them could comfort themselves with the fact theyâd be on 400UKP p.d the next time they found work.
The other interesting point is that the court by effectively stating the drivers are employees and not providing services in their own right, they have opened the way for HMRC to establish that Uber should have been paying VAT on the cost of the rides
Can the do that retrospectively?
I guess that if thereâs going to be claims for retrospective holiday and the such like then, yes, HMRC should be able toâŚ
Question : Are Uber drivers paid by the hour or by ride?
Dunno - Have only ever had 2 round trip Ubers to the pub and back. All organised used by the YoungAdults.
It is interesting
Uber are big in UAE, but their model is illegal.
(Emoyer has to sponsor the employees)
So they created a compromise they supplied the Tech & billing systems (and got the appropriate approvals) then outsourced the actual driving to the Limo division of Dubai Taxis. Worked superbly for all concerned.
And undermined every statement bu Uber that they cannot change their model in other countries.
They can & did.
Oh. And they charged the local version of VAT
As a minimum they can go back four years UNLESS they decide that Uber deliberately avoided Vat - then they can go back as much as 20 years
Currently by the ride - this is where the issues of minimum wage kick in
Time sat waiting for a fare is unpaid so when you look at the time spent on shift, they could well earn less that minimum wage
Uber are in deep deep shit
All of which will be passed on to the customersâŚ
