_ Claude Puel says Southampton will continue to consider the possibility of signing a new defender following the departure of José Fonte. _
The centre-back departed St Mary’s for West Ham United last week, and Puel says the club are keeping abreast of possible replacements.
He reiterated, however, that they would only bring someone in who would improve the squad and that he retains full faith in the players he already has.
“We will study possibilities to replace him,” Puel told reporters at a press conference ahead of the EFL Cup semi-final with Liverpool. "That’s normal. There is a possibility until the end of the market.
"For the moment at centre back we have Maya Yoshida, van Dijk, Gardos and Jack Stephens, and we will see if we have an opportunity, or if we will stay with our confidence in these players. We will see at the end of the market.
“For me, I am happy with all the squad and I respect my players. I am happy with these players and if one or two come into the squad then I think it will be important they can bring something more than the players for the moment in the squad.”

Southampton have made a fresh approach to Napoli for striker Manolo Gabbiadini.
The 25-year-old is available in this window with Napoli demanding at least £18million.
Southampton have offered £13million and made further contact on Monday about an improved offer.
West Bromwich Albion and Everton have also asked about Gabbiadini in this window but have been reluctant to match Napoli’s asking price.
Gabbiadini was a target for Stoke and Everton in the summer while Wolfsburg have also made offers in the past month but wanted an initial loan.
He has made 19 appearances this season and scored five goals, including three in his last three games.

I heard* that the Napoli chairman was coming over this week to try to finalise the deal.

Southampton have told Napoli that if they are not prepared to accept the offer on the table for striker Manolo Gabbiadini then they will walk away.
The Saints are one of a host of Premier League clubs interested in the Italian hitman, though they have gone a step further than most by making an official bid.
The offer stands at €16m plus a further €2m to €3m in bonus payments; Napoli have been claimed to be looking for a minimum of €20m.
According to Italian radio station Radio Crc, the Premier League side have now made clear to Napoli that if they are not willing to accept the offer a new one will not be forthcoming.
Indeed, Southampton would quickly switch their attention to Real Madrid youngster Mariano.
The 23-year-old is viewed as an alternative to Gabbiadini by the Saints, who will move on to trying to land him if no deal can be done for the Napoli man.
Mariano has made three appearances in La Liga for Real Madrid so far this season, scoring once.
The 23-year-old has risen through the youth ranks at the Bernabeu, turning out for Real Madrid’s C and Castilla teams.

Been worried about that for a while. He’s so important, reads the game like Virgil does and is getting better and better.
The most improved player this season? I believe so.

Have they? I wonder if they’re following my Prem Club business plan:
Step 1: Secure Season Ticket money
Step 2: Sell all ur high earning players
Step 3: Just play youth team or whatever
Step 4: Get relegated probably
Step 5: Soldier on playing youth team for couple of seasons, till you’ve got all the parachute money
Step 6: Either sell club to some other mug, or liquidate club and sell land for housing.
Step 7: Count all the millions you have made
