The European Union

I can only agree with you there, Bletch.

I’m intolerant of intolerance. Forgive me. I’ve also said I shan’t be discussing racism or immigration anymore. The point is, I want expecting to do that here. I thought this was place was different. If I’m being asked to ignore racist posts then I see no different to swf, which begs the question, what is the purpose of this place?

Interesting point, but I can’t help thinking that is a bit naive.

If you feel that this place must be racist-free, then I disagree.

I’d absolutely love for that to be the case, but this site will always reflect society - and unfortunately we have racists in society.

I’m happy to be told differently by pap, or by you the membership. Use the down-vote to tell the mods what you - the membership want to see on here.

Also, that type of racism (where a poster openly declares himself as a racist) is not the type that bothers me. I can ignore unionhotel, engage him and beat him with arguments, or perhaps if he gets sufficient down-votes then he’ll find himself encouraged to change his posting style.

The type of racism that I find frustrating to read, is where someone posts racist views whilst denying being a racist.

Allowing a racist to post unchallenged would be irresponsible. I have, and plan to challenge unionhotel.

Agree. I once expressed my appreciation to Verbal for sharing his wealth of first-hand knowledge and experience of various things on TSW. Therefore, I was very pleased when he joined Papsweb, where - I suppose because he was not limited to 3 posts a day - he also exhibited a cracking good sense of humour.

The European Union.

The issue of immigration is split into two parts and needs different threads.

Part 1 is the Little Englander “Damned Eastern Europeans taking our jobs” which is EU legislation

Part 2 is Immigration from outside the EU. Which these days ithe general opinion is primarily being formed due to the floods of Illegal Immigrants trying to escape the carnage created in the first place by the EU & US blowing their countries up then shipping loonies in to throw them off roof tops.

The EU debate for me is VERY different and either we rename this thread or try and start another one.

The simple concept that every single nation would be equal and have equal aspirations was a touch socialist. It was the siezed upon by avaricious Capitalists who saw how this nirvana could be exploited by moving their factories first to Czech Republic and the likes and now to Romania et al.

When asking questions about the EU we should start at the banks. An average commission on a loan for a broker is around 1%. So Greece owes 280 billion. That is an awful lot of people who made an awful ot of money out of doing deals that they would have known were stupid and against whom there was no recourse IF the money was never repaid. (See RBS etc etc)

Still the concerns about the EU expressed are “Business” based. It’s almost as if the Capitalists encouraged idiots like the French Government to make it impossible to employ anyone in France so they had justification to move their factories to E Europe & then to China.

Through all this, the most the Brits saw was some inspector closing down their Pub for storing Stilton the wrong way or banning pornographic Vegetables from sale. Now they want to charge you for Selfies at the Effel Tower ffs.

The Greeks have been screwed. I understand their fear at everything they built (on loans that NEVER should have been given to them - where was the ECB THEN? Oh yes they were earning commissions on it all)

They should do a total default, go back to the Drachma. It will take 2 or 3 years but those Captialists will be falling over themselves to use their cheaper labour, you’ll be able to pay less for your plumbing and can get fresh Vine Leaves instead of Vodka at the deli and then in 4 or 5 years they’ll all be back to take over France

The only thing that concerns me about this whole thing is whether or not Sarb will work out who furbal really is before he commits forum Harakiri?

Pap’s Pap is a bit Alf Garnet? So what? Diane Abbott is massive racist and they still let her argue her point. You can think ‘what a twat’, argue your point and highlight why they are wrong or walk away. You pay your fiver, the choice is yours.

If I’ve got any criticism of Furball that would apply to both his incarnations, it’d be that he is far too quick to draw detailed conclusions from limited information. It was equally amusing and frustrating when we were sparring on SaintsWeb. It’s something of a shame applied here, and as I said before, doesn’t make any sense.

If me da’s comments were followed by a series of yeehahs, pitchforks and white-sheeted mobs, we’d have a problem. bletch is also correct in that if it’s left unchallenged, we have a problem. That isn’t what’s happened here, and if this thread alone were held up as representative of everything Sotonians is about, I would not be embarrassed by it. I’d actually be proud. Proud because we’ve got a site where such views can be aired, discussed and debated.

No-one is going to come away from this thread thinking “Sotonians, eh? What a bunch of racist cunts. They’ll be worse than Stormfront within a year”, so I don’t understand the drama.

I think trust is a bit thing in reactions like this. There are folks on here I implicitly trust, and those are in the main the people I’ve met. If the people I trust, said something a bit bonkers, I’d still be on their side (just be wondering what’s up).

There are people on here I like loads and am intrigued by, but also a little nervous of! When they say something a bit bonkers, I sometimes react.

Of those I’ve not met, Bletch is in the former category. Bearsy in the latter, because I’m never sure if it’s all just one big piss take and he’s gonna make a fool of me any time soon! Highlighted by when he says something very smart, out of character!

I hope Furball gives us another chance, but I also feel sad CB Fry doesn’t have a friend at the moment, so that would solve that.

I have just read unionhotel’s and it just reminds on the likes of CB Fry. Argue you corner by all means but the insults I can live without. The final comment was particulalry childish and unpleasant.

I really seem to have started an unfortunate shitstorm on here. I apologise unreservedly to anyone that has been offended by my views.
First and foremost, they are my views. I would hate to inflict my vision of a world order onto anybody. Just to clarify, I have no desire whatsoever to exterminate Jews, muslims or any other racial creed. My values were instilled in me in a period just after the II world war when we still had an empire. We were taught (indoctrinated) with the notion that we ruled the planet and that pride in Queen and country was paramount.

Perhaps this is a generational issue and I would assume that most of the members on here are considerably younger than me and therefore have more modern ideals. My rulebook, however,is different.

I don’t hate foreigners really and irrespective of race or religion I would rather do a good turn than a bad turn. I have the utmost respect for most people and really am quite tolerant of reasoned arguments and genuinely believe that everybody has a right to be heard, even when those very views are abhorrent. Some of the points made, in retrospect, are not very well thought out and have, I know, caused great offence. They were never meant to be malicious but I accept that they could have been perceived in that way.

I sincerely hope that nobody leaves this forum because of my actions. They will not be repeated.

This is my grovelling apology. Please accept it as such.

Lots of love, unionhotel.

Well said.

Hi unionhotel, no harm done. Hope you stay around and get to know the place better.

I’d like to discuss the issues around generational views, but right now I’ve got to dash! I might pick that up tomorrow as I think an interesting one.

Lou.

It is bad though isn’t it? Foreigners coming over here, working harder than us, showing up on time and making us look bad. Someone should do something about it.

Must go and do some chores and enjoy the sunshine but before I go - fair play for the apology unionhotel. If only people at The Other Place could be so magnaminous. Also it is a shame that the word liberal gets used in a pergorative sense (as does Guardian readers). If there were more liberal minded people in the world it would be a much safer, nicer place to live in!

I didn’t agree with your views, but I defend your right to air them. Nobby Plumbs made a point about tolerance earlier. It’s not really tolerance if the only thing that you can tolerate is stuff agreeable to yourself, and from bitter personal experience, I know very well the phenomenon of people getting irate about thoughts others hold in their heads. I’ve never understood it; it’s counter-productive.

Still, much respect for this post. I just hope you haven’t passed this humility shit down to me

And that’s another thing. What impact will a potential Grexit have on the availability of Crocodile Handbags?

Meanwhile back in the random world of “causing offence” I read today of a kid’s painting being taken down at his school as it was of a Breastfeeding Mother and it may cause offence to Muslims.

I’ll say it will cause offence alright. Governments down here are spending MILLIONS on Breastfeeding AWARENESS campaigns in order to decrease the number of Muslim women pouring cheap chemicals from Asia into their newborns.

MEANWHILE in an EQUALLY OFFENSIVE MOVE.

Dubai has given permission for our Booze Shops to OPEN during NORMAL HOURS INCLUDING FRIDAYS during Ramadan. In fact some pubs have actually been given permission to SERVE ALCOHOL DURING THE DAY.

Obviously, only people worried about these things are the PC classes in the UK.

Kick Greece out the EU, C’mon Angela I dare you. They’ll get their own back by refusing to pay back the loans. The smug German & French investors will FINALLY have to tale some pain and THEN Greece can just make things easier and safer for the Migrants by opening their land borders with Turkey & save them that nasty trip across the Med

Not on the golf course today then Phil?

He;s in the booze shops that have just opened!!

We heard rumours that Old Krupnik (Polish Honey Vodka) was available in Dubai at a special promotion price of about 12 quid a bottle so went in searchof that. Ended up with a case of OSH cans instead.
