After inspiration from the “Midlife Crisis” thread, I thought it’d be good to have a separate thread for discussions around Classic Cars, what we want, what we’ve owned etc.
So, for me I want one of these, and plan to look to pick one up after I have built my double garage:
Over the years, I’ve owned three Citroen DS (two 1973 DS23s and a 1967 DS19 - by far the best of the three), three 2CVs and a GSA. I like old Citroens. I’ve also had a 1972 Lotus Elan Plus 2 S/130 - that was a lovely thing, went round corners like you wouldn’t believe.
If I had the money and garage space now, I’d love to get a Citroen SM, or a Traction Avant (preferably a 15/6) or maybe an Ami 6 saloon. Or perhaps an Amphicar. That would be cool.
Sadly UK ones are usually rust-buckets unless they’ve been properly restored…but that the same for all marques that have spent more than 30 years here.
As an aside I’ve started reading a magazine recently called “Modern Classics”, which as you can imagine looks at classics from the 80’s, 90’s and 00’s. As a child of the 90’s it speaks to me, and there are a lot of cars that are going under the radar at good prices which will end up being good investments.
People are always asking me, Alan, as a leading light in the British and North Norfolk media circles, do you lead a ‘crazy’ life? Is it all drug parties, barbeques, and sex dwarves? I usually just wink at them, knowingly. But in truth there is nothing I like better on a Sunday afternoon, than to put my feet up, put my slippers on (my feet), and roast the soles (of my feet) on the hearth, while I lean back and peruse the latest edition of “Modern Classics” magazine. Always a stonking read. As you can imagine, it looks at classics from the 80s, 90s and 00’s, which in most peoples opinion, are the years that style really got driving. I can spend hours, comparing the Ford Granada 2.0 Diesel, with the Austin Montego. Great memories, and there are a lot of cars going under the radar at good prices which will end up being good investments.
'76 I assume, as it’s an N-plate. I’ve seen it around the port before, at different terminals, but always in the sunshine and with the hood down. Good to see him using it on a morning like today.
…just checked, it’s August '74. Must be an aftermarket plate.
Having brought the MG up to London today in order to swerve the ULEZ tax under the 40 year rule, I fully expected it to be the oldest car at the hotel. However…
The dear lady who owned my '58 Karmann Ghia passed away last year. Her niece who was dealing with her estate found a lot of car documents in a couple of folders with my name on the front. She collected everything up and a couple of days ago, a large envelope landed on my door mat.
This now completes the history of my Ghia from day one…the original order form for the purchase of the car on the US Tourist Scheme, where she ordered her new car and collected it from a VW dealership in Stuttgart. They then drove their new car around Europe for the next 5 months, taking it back to the same dealership before it was shipped to their home in Berkeley CA.
This was their itinerary taking in 13 countries, 9000 miles in her new Karmann Ghia…
