Sparta remain in command of Saints’ Europa League group with third straight win

Show/hide article…

SPARTA Prague remained top of Saints’ Europa League group and took major step towards the knockout phase with their third straight win in the competition.

The Czech side defeated Israeli outfit Hapoel Be’er Sheva 2-0 at the Generali Arena in Prague to take full command of Group K with two games remaining. They now only need two points to get to the next round.

Sparta, who lost to Saints 3-0 in their opening game of the group stages, were ahead on 23 minutes when a Borek Dockal’s free-kick was redirected into the goal by Hapoel defender Ben Bitton.

David Lafata made it six goals in as many games for Sparta, doubling the home side’s lead from Dockal’s cross on 38 minutes.

Sparta continued to dominate proceedings and could have extended their lead, but Vaclav Dudl couldn’t quite direct his second half shot on target.

Sparta have all but consigned Hapoel to elimination after defeating the Israelis in back-to-back game.

Saint and Sparta meet in Prague on November 24 with both sides gunning to be at the summit of the group.

Southampton 2-1 Inter Milan PLAYER RATINGS

Show/hide article…

Southampton produced a thrilling second-half comeback to beat Inter Milan and keep alive their hopes of reaching the last 32 of the Europa League.

A strike from Virgil van Dijk and an own goal from Yuto Nagatomo handed Claude Puel’s side victory after Mauro Icardi had given the Serie A side a first-half lead.

Sportsmail’s KIERAN GILL ran the rule over both sets of players at St Mary’s on Thursday night…

Could do little about Inter’s goal as Icardi hit it hard and low into the bottom corner. Rarely troubled in truth.

Wanted to get forward down the right wing. Inter rarely pushed forward in the first or second halves.

Banega went looking for a penalty and rightly didn’t get it as Yoshida only stood strong. A decent partner to Van Dijk here.

Handed the captain’s armband. Strong. Felt he was fouled in build-up to Inter’s opener and was in the right place at the right time for the equaliser. Led by example.

Pushed forward when possible and was the player elbowed by Candreva, who somehow wasn’t shown a red card.

Didn’t let Inter’s midfield win the battle too often. Saw Southampton win their soft penalty.

Held midfield together well and hit the crossbar in the build-up to Southampton’s equaliser.

Interchangeable with Romeu. Tested Handanovic repeatedly as Southampton tried to get back into the tie. Passed the ball expertly. Did his job in a historic win.

Was lively in Southampton’s front three but saw his penalty saved before half time. Put in the cross that led to the own goal and winner, however.

Central in Southampton’s attack and created chances, particularly in the first half. Worked hard throughout.

Played on the left of the attack. Didn’t do enough to worry Inter and was substituted after 59 minutes with Southampton 1-0 down.

Made five changes to his starting line-up. Just as at the San Siro, his side were sucker-punched by Inter’s goal. His team dominated and turned it around, though.

Got a strong hand to deny Tadic from the penalty spot. Then made several smart saves in second half but helpless for the two conceded goals.

Had Rodriguez to look after and wasn’t too troubled in the first half. Man marked. His deflection led to own goal by Nagatomo.

Lucky to get away with his shirt tugging, as were all of Inter’s defenders. Crunching tackles galore.

Only defender who retained his place from Inter’s last game. Looked uneasy in possession in first half but stayed strong. A hothead, however.

Another who enjoyed tugging a shirt or two and got away with it. Redmond and Tadic kept him busy. Clumsy own goal gave Southampton the win.

His run and cross from the right wing created Inter’s opening goal but somehow wasn’t sent off for smacking McQueen. Still wondering how.

An unhappy return for the former Cardiff midfielder. Often dropped deep to help defence as Southampton piled on pressure.

Did he rugby-tackle Van Dijk before the away team’s opener? Referee said no and it worked in Inter’s favour for the first goal.

Poor attempt at first for Inter’s goal but his rebound was picked up by Icardi. Penalised for handball inside the box, though a soft decision.

Wanted a penalty after clever footwork in a tight area but went down too easy early on. Little happened for him after that.

Took his goal well when the ball fell to him as he turned and shot. Isolated in Inter’s attack.

There’s being thrown in at the deep end, then there’s this. Inter’s youth team coach made six changes to their last XI. They couldn’t hold on.

Where to begin? Didn’t fall for Banega’s attempt at getting a penalty but was Van Dijk fouled in the build-up to Inter’s goal? Southampton say yes. Let a lot of shirt tugging go on. Awarded a soft Southampton penalty and bottled it by not sending Candreva off for his clear elbow on McQueen.

Southampton 2 Inter Milan 1: Saints enjoy greatest European night with unforgettable comeback

Show/hide article…

When the time comes to write the tale of this sparkling era in Southampton’s history, and this night in particular, the chroniclers will not recall that the opposition were languishing in the bottom half of Serie A at the time. They will not recall that the visitors were a club in disarray, whose manager had been in the job for 48 hours. No, all they will recall is that Inter Milan – yes, that Inter Milan – came to St Mary’s, and left empty-handed.

In fact, it was even more impressive than that. The three-time European champions came to St Mary’s and spent most of the game with 10 men planted behind the ball. Yet despite going behind and missing a penalty, Southampton dominated: taking just five second-half minutes to secure a win that will live long in their collected memories.

Southampton fight back to slay Italian giants in historic victory

Show/hide article…

Southampton edged closer to the Europa League knockout stages with an historic victory against Italian giants Inter Milan despite going behind and missing a penalty in the first half.

Mauro Icardi had put caretaker manager Stefano Vecchi’s side in front but the 805 away supporters who had made the 620 mile trip North from Lombardy went home disappointed after Claude Puel’s side deservedly reversed their fortunes with a goal from man of the match Virgil Van Dijk and an own goal from Yuto Nagatomo.

Before this game, James Ward-Prowse had said that this was an occasion the fans deserved after seeing their team drop to the third tier and enter administration seven years ago.

It is almost six years ago to the day that Dagenham and Redbridge were the visitors to St Mary’s for a League One fixture. Inter had won the Champions League six months earlier.

But whilst Southampton have been upwardly mobile, the Nerazzurri have lost some of their lustre and sacked Ronald de Boer at the beginning of the week after dropping to 12th in Serie A.

Just as they did in the San Siro early on, Southampton made the early running, once they had survived a third minute scare when Ever Banega tumbled under Maya Yoshida’s challenge. His fall failed to convince the Polish official.

Again Claude Puel rotated his squad and one of the six changes, Jay Rodriguez, came close as he curled just over the bar in the tenth minute. Soon afterwards, some slick interplay between Dusan Tadic and Nathan Redmond ended with the latter smashing narrowly wide from a tight angle.

Inter, unfamiliar in their lime green and blue shirts were happy to sit back and counter. That strategy brought the opening goal for the Italians against the run of play.

Breaking down the right flank, Danilo D’Ambrosio wriggled free of Virgil Van Dijk and found Ivan Perisic at the back post. His shot was blocked by Cuco Martina but Inter captain Icardi fired the rebound crisply past Fraser Forster in to the bottom corner.

Southampton were not cowed and should have been level as the half ended shrouded in controversy.

Firstly, Puel’s side were awarded a fortuitous penalty when the ball bounced up off Pierre Højbjerg and struck Perisic’s arm at point-blank range. Saints had to wait several minutes to take the spot-kick as Inter protested and Antonio Candreva appeared to elbow Sam McQueen.

The Italian international was only booked and then Tadic finally stepped up only to see his effort saved by the legs of Samir Handanovic before under-fire referee Pawel Gil blew for half-time. Handanovic has saved all three penalties he has faced in the competition for Inter but it was a tame effort from the Saints midfielder.

Fuelled by their perceived injustice, Southampton made a ferocious start to the second half with Ward-Prowse twice forcing saves from Handanovic with efforts from distance.

The pre-match fighting talk from Inter’s Andrea Ranocchia was that Southampton would “have to come away sweating blood” if they wanted to win this game.

Certainly there was no shortage of effort but just as in the corresponding fixture, Inter were dogged and resilient. Icardi, much maligned by the Inter ‘tifosi’ for comments made about them in his recent book, was alone in attack as the other nine outfield players defended their lead.

After the imperious Van Dijk had forced another outstanding save from Handanovic as he headed Tadic’s corner at goal, finally the breakthrough came.

As another Tadic corner was cleared, Oriol Romeu looped the ball against the crossbar before Van Dijk stabbed home the rebound and St Mary’s exploded.

“There’s only one Marcus Liebherr” rang out from around the ground in tribute to the club’s late owner. His daughter, Katharina, is rumoured to be in talks to sell the club to Chinese company Lander Sports Development Co. for £200m.

How the late Mr Liebherr would have loved to have been present when Southampton went in front.

This time, luck was on their side as Tadic’s low cross evaded everyone but struck the knee of the luckless Nagatomo at the back post and trickled into the net.

The Europa League trophy visited the South Coast city on Monday. Saints fans will be dreaming it makes a return visit next May.

Virgil van Dijk says “dominant” Southampton deserved Europa League win over Inter Milan

Show/hide article…

Virgil van Dijk insisted Southampton were good value for their win over Inter Milan after they came from behind to claim a 2-1 victory at St Mary’s.

A Van Dijk strike coupled with a Yuto Nagatomo own-goal within six second-half minutes turned the Europa League tie on its head following Mauro Icardi’s 33rd-minute opener.

And the Dutchman, who was harshly denied a penalty shortly before his equaliser when he was held in the box by Andrea Ranocchia, said Saints fully deserved all three points.

“The most important thing is that it was well deserved,” Van Dijk told BT Sport. “I think we played some good football. We were the dominant side.”

Claude Puel’s acquitted themselves well in the reverse fixture at the San Siro two weeks ago but were beaten 1-0 and Van Dijk was pleased to avenge that defeat.

The 25-year-old central defender added: “It was the same story in Milan when we didn’t reward ourselves with a win but today we did.”

van Dijk: A night to be proud of

Show/hide article…

After Mauro Icardi’s opener against the run of play on 33 minutes, Dušan Tadić was denied from the penalty spot with the last kick of the half.

But Saints showed their spirit and resilience with a stirring second-half display to turn the game on its head, with van Dijk’s leveller followed up by Yuto Nagatomo’s own goal to seal a famous night.

“The most important thing is that it’s well deserved. I think we played some good football and were the dominant side,” said van Dijk.

“It was the same story in the last game but we didn’t reward ourselves with the win, but today we did.

“It’s been a great night and a spectacular game for the fans especially and I felt we deserved that win.”

Southampton are now on seven points, just two behind leaders Sparta Praha who secured a 2-0 victory over Hapoel Beer-Sheva in the other Group K fixture.

And the stand-in skipper van Dijk feels they can take confidence from a special night that everyone should be proud of.

He added: “I think we need to enjoy it and the club does to because we have come so far.

“Everyone around the club can be very proud and I’m very proud of my team as well.

“We have two big games coming up and hopefully we can make it another special night here, with a big performance away as well.”

Southampton 2-1 Inter Milan: Saints fight back to beat Inter

Show/hide article…

Saints beat Inter Milan 2-1 to secure a famous victory that takes them to the brink of the Europa League’s knockout stages.

A fortnight after a defeat at the San Siro had threatened to undermine their chances, Saints recovered from going a goal behind and missing a first-half penalty to climb to second in Group K and establish a three-point lead over Hapoel Be’er Sheva in third.

Yuto Nagatomo’s 69th-minute own goal decided the game, after Southampton defender Virgil van Dijk had cancelled out Mauro Icardi’s first-half opener for the Italian visitors. Dusan Tadic missed from the spot on the stroke of half-time, but it did not prove decisive.

Respective home and away fixtures with Hapoel and group leaders Sparta Prague are now to come for Southampton. Draws in each would suffice, but first place is yet possible for Claude Puel’s team, and would provide significant satisfaction for the manager after he again gambled with his team selection.

Two weeks ago in Milan, Southampton had lost 1-0 on an evening when his weakened XI rarely looked like scoring.

It therefore surprised when he again selected a near-identical side at St Mary’s, particularly after that defeat in Italy had threatened their hopes of progressing and with struggling Hull next in the Premier League.

Two days after Inter had sacked manager Frank de Boer their visitors appeared in a vulnerable position, but even then, starting without Charlie Austin, Sofiane Boufal, Ryan Bertrand and Steven Davis represented a risk. Upon the final whistle, however, Puel had been vindicated, and had ensured faith remained in the rotation system which otherwise may have come under threat.

As in the first half in Milan, Southampton enjoyed the majority of possession without ever threatening or with a goal looking likely.

Jay Rodriguez and Nathan Redmond had come closest with reasonable attempts on goal, but a passage of unconvincing defending led to Inter taking the lead.

Attempts to clear Ever Banega’s low 33rd-minute cross came to little when the ball was cut-back to Inter’s under-fire captain Icardi, and from close range the striker classily turned and finished into the bottom left corner beyond Fraser Forster.

A handball from Ivan Perisic on the stroke of half-time gifted Southampton a penalty and the chance to equalise. In the build-up to Tadic’s attempt, Antonio Candreva was booked for appearing to strike Sam McQueen with his forearm, while Inter were also appearing to tamper with the penalty spot. Tadic then saw his poor strike close to the centre of the goal saved by Samir Handanovic.

Puel responded in the second half by introducing Austin for Rodriguez, and amid the striker’s focal point and greater intensity an equalising goal was secured.

James Ward-Prowse had already seen a powerful volley well saved when in the 65th minute, from the rebound to Oriol Romeu’s strike hitting the crossbar, Van Dijk finished from close range.

Seizing the momentum that had been built amid Inter’s lack of confidence, Southampton’s winning goal came just four minutes later.

After a run down the left wing, Tadic sent a cross into the penalty area that deflected off Danilo D’Ambrosio to his team-mate Nagatomo, who then clumsily sent the ball looping into the back of the net.

Puel: I’m proud of my players

Show/hide article…

Saints staged a superb second-half rally at St Mary’s to stun the Italian giants and put themselves within touching distance of qualification for the knockout stages of the UEFA Europa League.

"I think it was a fantastic game for my players, because all the scenarios were against us tonight,” said Puel

“We dominated the first half, but we went 1-0 down and just before half-time we missed a penalty.

“There were also many saves from the opponent’s goalkeeper, but we persisted and all the players kept their calm and quality on the pitch, and we came back to score this first goal with Virgil and then after with the second. All the team were rewarded tonight.”

Puel, who two weeks ago oversaw a cruel 1-0 defeat in the San Siro, added: "We lost the first game against Inter, which was a shame, because we played a very good game, but it was important at home to make the difference.

“It was very interesting, because I think we played a very good team, with a good spirit. It was not the same team that we saw in the last game and it was very hard to play a great team like Inter Milan, but we saw a very good game from my team.

“I’m proud of my players. All the squad have kept the good spirit and the good attitude and now it’s important to continue this work.

"The reaction and the strong character of my team was fantastic.”

Watch Southampton players react to Europa League win over Inter Milan

Show/hide article…

In the above video Southampton goal-scorer Virgil van Dijk and Sam McQueen react to their side’s win over Inter Milan in the Europa League.

The Saints duo spoke to BT Sport immediately after the fixture, with the Dutchman saying the result was well deserved.

Southampton went behind at St Mary’s after Inter captain Mauro Icardi pounced on a loose ball to put his team ahead in 33 minutes.

Claude Puel’s men were given a lifeline just before the break when they were awarded a controversial penalty, but Dusan Tadic was unable to bring his side level.

Southampton started the second half brightly and Virgil van Dijk eventually equalised in the 64th minute, scoring from close range.

And then five minutes later the Saints took the lead after Yuto Nagatomo failed to clear a Tadic cross and put the ball into his own net.

Southampton, who lost to Inter a fortnight ago, remain second in Group K and are now on course to reach the knockout stages of the competition.

Southampton 2-1 Inter Milan: Puel insists it isn’t job done yet

Show/hide article…

Claude Puel warned Saints cannot begin to dream of the Europa League knockout stages despite their historic 2-1 win over Inter Milan at St Mary’s.

The comeback victory has left Saints and Sparta Prague as heavy favourites to advance from Group K with two games remaining.

Victory against the Italian giants at St Mary’s was a landmark result for the club, but Puel urged calm and focus with Saints set to head to Prague for their next European fixture with the knockout stages seemingly beckoning.

Though Puel believes Saints now need just one win to ensure progress from the group stages, he is taking nothing for granted just yet.

“Yes of course (one more win should qualify Saints), said Puel.

“The next game will be very difficult of course because it’s a good team Sparta.

“We know that it was important to win tonight because after just two possibilities - a game away and at home to take six points.

“It was important to get this result and it’s a good result but it’s not finished of course.

“We want to know the qualification in this competition and it was a fantastic game for my players but the work is not finished.”

The match was another incredible chapter in Saints’ recent journey from administration and a League One points deduction all the way through to beating three time Champions League winners Inter.

Saints’ fans played a huge part in the victory as they roared their side to three points in a fantastic second half display.

“It was important for our fans to win also because they came for the first game against Inter (in Milan) with 8,000 supporters and it was fantastic,” admitted Puel.

“It was important to win this game because all the support is very very important.

“It was fantastic and for my players the second half to give all the possibilites to come back in this game.

“Of course the scenario is very interesting because all tonight at the beginning of the game we kept a good character and we persist with our play and continue this good play and in the final we have been rewarded. This is fantastic for my players and the fans.”

Hunter expecting ‘hard encounter’ against Swansea

Show/hide article…

Saints will be determined to pick up victory in Wales, having suffered a 2-1 defeat in their first match of the tournament against Bristol City.

However, Martin Hunter is well aware of the threat that the Swans, who currently sit top of Division Two, will pose.

“Swansea are a very robust side,” he said.

“They also have some very good technical players, so we are expecting another hard encounter.

“Obviously it’s an away game at their training ground so our players will have to deal with that experience.

“And this is a competition that we won a few seasons ago, so we will be wanting to go as far as we can again this year.”

Saints head into the encounter having suffered two defeats against Manchester City and Derby County in their previous league outings.

But Hunter maintains that his men are in buoyant mood ahead of the cup tie.

“The mood is always good,” he continued.

“We had a debrief in the week and said our piece in terms of the performance at Derby.

“The team Derby put out had over 1000 league games between them, so playing against senior players like that is always going to throw up different challenges.

“But that’s all part of the development and the players have been proactive in learning and making the necessary changes in the week.”

Willard: We need to start winning again

Show/hide article…

Martin Hunter’s men travel to Swansea City in their second Premier League Cup fixture – a competition that Willard believes Saints could go all the way in.

“It’s going to be a tough game in the cup,” he said.

“We lost against Bristol City in the last game, so we need to get a win. We won the cup a couple of years ago, so we want to try and win it again.

“Everyone is confident, really. We need to go and put a good performance in, prove people wrong and show that we can start winning again.

“If we start getting our performances right and performing well collectively and individually then we can go all the way in this competition.”

Since earning a starting berth in the previous cup game against Bristol City, Willard has enjoyed a good run of minutes for the Under-23s.

Something the London-born midfielder is now keen to maintain and use to help further aid his development.

“The start of the season was frustrating,”

“I wasn’t getting a lot of minutes, but in the last four or five games I have been playing and really enjoying it.

“That’s all I want to do. I want to show the coaches how good I am and that I can start every week.”
