Southampton pay penalty for Inter’s dark arts as Candreva sparks fury

Show/hide article…

Former Southampton pair Francis Benali and Kevin Davies were angered by Inter Milan’s gamesmanship as their former club squandered a late first half penalty.

Deep into the opening 45 minutes at St Mary’s Ivan Perisic was harshly penalised for a handball but it was the actions of Inter’s players afterwards that angered BT Sport pundits and Benali and Davies.

Inter midfielder Antonio Candreva appeared to scuff up the penalty spot before elbowing Sam McQueen in the face after the Saints’ youngster challenged his actions.

Dusan Tadic went on to miss the kick and Davies was left irate as he picked apart the incident pitch-side.

‘He’s does it on two, three, four, five occasions and that’s when Sam McQueen has spotted it and gone over to try and flatten it and he’s caught him with the elbow,’ said Davies.

'The only thing that saved Candreva there is reaction really. If he [McQueen] goes rolling around the referee would have probably sent him off. We don’t want to see that obviously.

The victim, McQueen thought Candreva should have seen red. He said: 'I saw him [Candreva] do it. Some players try and do it these day, they try and dig up the penalty spot. I thought that was a silly thing to do so I went over to try and stop it and I felt he gave me an elbow in the jaw.

‘I’m an honest player, I didn’t want to go down even though I did drop to my knees a bit. I’m sure people will laugh at that. I felt there was an elbow so I think we were unlucky they didn’t get a red card.’

Benali took issue with Candreva’s pre-penalty behaviour but also the manner in which Dusan Tadic squandered the bit of fortune handed to Saints.

‘The referee is stood a few yards away and has seen Candreva put his elbow into Sam McQueen’s face. He’s booked him so he’s seen enough to book him – surely if you’re putting your hands into an opponent’s face it’s a red card,’ said Benali.

‘That’s a dreadful penalty. We’ve got Charlie Austin sat on the bench. We had that little disagreement a few weeks back between him and Tadic over who took the penalty.’

6 things we learned from Southampton 2-1 Inter Milan

Show/hide article…

Southampton fought back from a goal down to get revenge on Inter Milan and take a huge step towards the Europa League knockout stages.

The Saints were beaten 1-0 in the San Siro two weeks ago and looked to be heading for another defeat when Inter captain Mauro Icardi scored his ninth goal of the season.

Dusan Tadic had the chance to level just before the break but Samir Handanovic expertly saved his spot kick.

Southampton regrouped in the second half, though, and earned the result their performance deserved.

Virgil van Dijk swept home the equaliser before Inter full-back Yuto Nagatomo bundled the ball into his own net.

Here, our man Hamish Mackay takes you through his six talking points from the game…

Manager Claude Puel said before the match Southampton would need two wins from their remaining three games to progress to the knockout stages.

And after fighting back to earn three points on Thursday qualification looks a formality.

A home tie against Hapoel Be’er Sheva and a trip to Sparta Prague - who they beat 3-0 at St Mary’s - should provide little cause for concern in the final group meetings.

Southampton have lost just one of their 16 European home ties - and none since 1981.

Inter beat them when the two sides met in Italy last month, but the Saints overcame a difficult first half at St Mary’s and maintained their remarkable run.

Handanovic has saved 22 penalties in Serie A during his career - and he showed at St Mary’s that record is no coincidence.

Ivan Perišić’s handball gave Southampton a penalty on the stroke of half time, but Handanovic threw his 6ft 3in frame to the ground to thwart Tadic’s effort.

He may not be the most popular man with Inter’s fans - the club’s ultras recently labelled him a “vile piece of s_*_” - but Mauro Icardi demonstrated again on Thursday night just how important he is to this side.

The Argentine fired Inter ahead with a brilliant half-volleyed finish and has now scored nine of the club’s 16 goals this season.

A reconciliation between Inter’s captain and core fans remains unlikely, but performances like this certainly won’t hurt.

Inter lost manager Frank De Boer in the run-up to this game and so seemed prepared to do anything to get the result.

In the absence of form the Italians used their experience to influence the key moments of the game. Van Dijk was hauled down off the ball in the build-up to the opener in what looked a clear foul.

Antonio Candreva was then seen scuffing up the penalty spot before Tadic missed from 12 yards and the Italian also caught Sam McQueen with an elbow to the face and escaped with a booking.

But Southampton held their nerve, maintained their discipline and came away with the result.

Van Dijk has enjoyed a relatively low key rise to prominence in European football. He moved from Willem II’s youth team to Groningen before joining Celtic in 2013.

He excelled in Scotland and subsequently earned a move to the south coast. Remarkably, some questioned his £11.5million price tag at the beginning of last season, but the Dutchman answered his critics and then some.

He was unfortunate to be hauled down off the ball for Inter’s opener and could have easily won a penalty in the second half.

But Van Dijk nonetheless made his mark at both ends of the pitch and capped his performance with a goal.

Southampton finally break down Inter Milan to seal 2-1 victory

Show/hide article…

The winning goal was ugly as they come but the result was a thing of beauty as Southampton pulled off one of the greatest victories in their history by defeating Inter Milan.

Southampton had not even played Italian opposition until they met Inter in the pair’s first Europa League tie a few weeks ago, not least ones who won the Champions League only six years ago.

Inter, without a manager after sacking Frank De Boer, are a side in turmoil but they still had the finances to spend more than £100million in the transfer market during the summer, so take nothing away from Southampton’s result.

The St Mary’s supporters were treated to a proper European night; opposition with a glittering reputation, referee controversy going for and against them, a mass confrontation inside Inter’s penalty box as tempers sparked into the crisp air, a missed penalty and finally a victory that will go down in their history books.

After dominating against these opponents over in Milan and coming away with nothing, it looked like they would endure another frustrating night when Mauro Icardi put Inter ahead in the first half.

But Virgil van Dijk equalised after the break and an own goal in the 69th minute eventually sealed it.

Dusan Tadic crossed from the left, Danilo D’Ambrosio toed the ball on, it missed everyone apart from Yuto Nagatomo who was rooted to the spot as, under no pressure, the ball hit his left knee and bounced in.

Not that anyone on this pleasant stretch of the south coast will care one jot how the match-clinching goal came.

In Southampton’s correlating fixture back in 2010 — six months after Inter lifted the Champions League trophy and won the treble under Jose Mourinho — they were seeing off Dagenham and Redbridge in League One.

A teenage Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain scored twice for them on the way to earning a move to Arsenal. Jose Fonte also scored that evening and he is still here, although he had to watch on as his team-mates came from behind to send Southampton on the way toward reaching the Europa League knockout stage.

Inter sprung a surprise at the San Siro, scoring with their only shot on target of the match, and it was with their first shot on target that they took the lead again on 33 minutes.

Antonio Candreva got to the byline on the right of Southampton’s goal, clipped the ball across with the outside of his right boot and Ivan Perisic mis-kicked at the back post. Cuco Martina failed to clear and Perisic squeezed the ball back for Icardi to finish finely on the turn.

It felt harsh on Southampton, as did the result in Milan, but they were paying the price for Claude Puel persisting with his strict rotation policy.

The Frenchman made five changes from the defeat by Chelsea on Sunday despite the significance the result would bear on either side’s chances of progression.

Only three points separated Inter, at the bottom, and Sparta Prague, at the top, going into the tie.

Puel’s side dictated possession, but the play was disjointed. Tadic blocked Oriol Romeu’s shot on the edge of Inter’s penalty area. Defender Van Dijk smashed a clearance into midfielder James Ward-Prowse’s back.

Jay Rodriguez, one of the changes, is still recovering from a series of long-term injuries and should have scored after only 46 seconds when Tadic dug out a cross and the striker glanced his header narrowly wide. Nathan Redmond cut inside from the left and went for the far corner but missed it.

Inter punished their misses, but Southampton had the chance to make the score reflect their superiority when they won a penalty moments before half-time.

The game erupted as referee Pawel Gil deemed Perisic to have handled in the box when Pierre Hojbjerg bobbled the ball up into the air.

Inter’s players surrounded the referee. Southampton full back Sam McQueen jogged into the penalty area and Candreva threw out an arm and caught him in the side of the head.

Players from both sides piled in. Gil eventually gave a yellow card. After all the anger had subsided, Tadic tamely struck the penalty to the right of goal and Samir Handanovic dived to save.

Inter’s goalkeeper was the best player on the pitch in the two side’s last match and he was proving peerless once again.

Five minutes into the second half and he was practically showing off. He dived to his right, flinging his right arm into the air and reaching a hand to Ward-Prowse’s top-corner bound strike. He sprung up to block again, too, when Rodriguez tried to head in the rebound.

But after 64 minutes of this game — and 90 plus stoppages of the other — Inter’s goalkeeper was beaten.

Van Dijk thundered a header from a corner that Handanovic tipped over, but from the next delivery the centre-back finally had them level.

The ball initially dropped to Oriol Romeu, who flicked it looping on to the cross bar. Handanovic was on the floor and Van Dijk was there to tap in the rebound.

Nagatomo did the rest for them. The rest is history.

Southampton 2-1 Inter Milan: Saints rally to overcome three-time European champions

Show/hide article…

Southampton came from behind to register a famous 2-1 Europa League victory over Inter Milan at St Mary’s on Thursday.

The hosts would have been fearing the worst when, against the run of play, captain Mauro Icardi, who scored the decisive goal when the sides met in the San Siro a fortnight ago, put Inter ahead on 33 minutes.

However, Saints rallied to that setback, and Dusan Tadic saved penalty in first-half stoppage time to deservedly secure the three points.

First, Virgil van Dijk drew Saints level on 64 minutes before Inter defender Yuto Nagatomo turned the ball into his own net five minutes later to seal an historic victory for the hosts.

The result leaves qualification for the knockout stages firmly in Southampton’s hands, with Claude Puel’s men now sat second in Group F, two points behind leaders Sparta Prague and three ahead of third-placed Hapoel Beer-Sheva.

With three points, Inter occupy bottom spot with two games to play.

Despite rarely threatening to score in Milan two weeks ago, Puel named a near-identical side at St Mary’s to the one fielded at the San Siro.

Two days after Inter had sacked manager Frank de Boer, the visitors appeared in a vulnerable position, but even then, starting without Charlie Austin, Sofiane Boufal, Ryan Bertrand and Steven Davis represented a risk.

Upon the final whistle, however, Puel had been vindicated, and had ensured faith remained in the rotation system which otherwise may have come under threat.

As in the first half in Milan, Southampton enjoyed the majority of possession without ever threatening or with a goal looking likely.

Jay Rodriguez and Nathan Redmond had come closest with reasonable attempts on goal, but a passage of unconvincing defending led to Inter taking the lead.

Attempts to clear Ever Banega’s low 33rd-minute cross came to little when the ball was cut-back to Inter’s under-fire captain Icardi, and from close range the striker turned and finished into the bottom left corner beyond Fraser Forster.

A handball from Ivan Perisic on the stroke of half-time gifted Southampton a penalty and the chance to equalise.

In the build-up to Tadic’s attempt, Antonio Candreva was booked for appearing to strike Sam McQueen with his forearm, while Inter were also appearing to tamper with the penalty spot. Tadic then saw his poor strike close to the centre of the goal saved by Handanovic.

Puel responded in the second half by introducing Austin for Rodriguez, and with the striker as a focal point and adding greater intensity an equalising goal was secured.

James Ward-Prowse had already seen a powerful volley well saved when in the 65th minute, from the rebound to Oriol Romeu’s strike, Van Dijk finished from close range.

Seizing the momentum that had been built amid Inter’s lack of confidence, Southampton’s winning goal came just four minutes later.

After a run down the left wing, Tadic sent a cross into the penalty area that deflected off Danilo D’Ambrosio to his team-mate Nagatomo, who then clumsily sent the ball looping into the back of the net.
