Mauro Icardi admits Inter Milan have zero confidence

Show/hide article…

Mauro Icardi admits Inter Milan are struggling for confidence after watching his team-mates ‘crumble’ against Southampton on Thursday night.

Inter let a first-half lead slip as the Saints fought their way back to claim a deserved 2-1 victory at St Mary’s.

Icardi had put the visitors in front with a smart first-half finish but Claude Puel’s side always looked like turning the match around and, after Dusan Tadic had earlier missed a penalty, Virgil van Dijk levelled the scores midway through the second half.

Inter, who are without a manager following Frank de Boer’s sacking on Tuesday, folded under the pressure as Yuto Nagatomo turned the ball into his own net to seal yet another defeat for the Italian giants.

Icardi admits he is struggling to understand the club’s drastic decline in form.

‘We played well in the first half and took the lead, but I don’t know why every time we concede a goal our whole world seems to come crumbling down around us,’ Icardi told Sky Italia.

'It keeps happening, a goal out of nowhere and we just lose it. We conceded the second goal in a strange way.

‘If we knew what was causing it we would change immediately because all we want is to do well.’

Inter are now firmly rooted to the bottom of Group K and are unlikely to qualify for the knockout stage of the Europa League.

However, Icardi has not yet given up hope of overhauling Southampton’s four-point advantage in the remaining two group games.

‘It is going to be hard for us to qualify from the group now but as long as it is still possible we have to go for it,’ he said. 'There is not much to say. It is an unlucky moment and everything is going wrong.

‘We must do whatever it takes to turn things around.’

Puel: A win for the fans

Show/hide article…

The Saints boss praised the atmosphere created by the home fans at St Mary’s, as they watched their side record a famous result against the Italian giants.

After not being able to give them a win in the San Siro two weeks previously, Puel was delighted that his team were able to reward the supporters in the latest game against Inter.

“It was important also that the fans were rewarded, because they came for the first one against Inter in their thousands and it was important to win this game for them,” said Puel.

“It was a fantastic atmosphere, and it was important for my players to have this great support. It was a fantastic atmosphere and we will want to know this for the future.”

While the win has edged Saints closer to qualifying for the knockout stages, Puel insisted there is still plenty of work to do.

“Now we know the way, because it’s not finished – it’s important to continue this work in this competition, and the next game, away against Sparta, will be very hard,” he said.

Southampton boss Claude Puel calls for Antonio Candreva red card

Show/hide article…

Claude Puel insisted Inter Milan’s Antonio Candreva should have been sent off for appearing to strike Sam McQueen during Southampton’s 2-1 Europa League victory.

The manager did, however, also say he did not see Inter’s apparent attempts to tamper with the penalty spot in the build-up to Dusan Tadic’s saved attempt.

Southampton moved to the brink of the competition’s knockout stages after a famous, comeback victory over one of Europe’s biggest teams.

Virgil van Dijk’s equalising goal and an own goal from Yuto Nagatomo secured three vital points after Mauro Icardi had given Inter the lead. Their total of seven points from four games also ensured a further victory from their trip to Sparta Prague or home fixture with Hapoel Be’er Sheva would guarantee at least a top-two finish.

Regardless, Puel remained adamant Candreva should have been sent off in the first half when he appeared to strike McQueen with his forearm shortly after Southampton were awarded a penalty for handball.

The Italy international was instead only booked and remained on the pitch as the hosts recovered from going a goal down, but asked if he should have been given a red card, the manager responded: "Of course. And perhaps also I thought with the first goal Virgil [was fouled].

"It was important for us to come back with calm and quality.

"It was not the Milan of the first game [when Southampton lost 1-0]; it was a good team with quality on the run and good spirit.

"In a game that was difficult we can show fantastic character.’’

McQueen was selected at left-back in place of the rested Ryan Bertrand, and of the incident told BT Sport: "I saw him [Candreva] do it. Some players try and do it these days, they try and dig up the penalty spot.

"I thought that was a silly thing to do so I went over to try and stop it and I felt he gave me an elbow in the jaw. I’m an honest player, I didn’t want to go down even though I did drop to my knees a bit.

"I’m sure people will laugh at that. I felt there was an elbow so I think we were unlucky they didn’t get a red card.’’

Van Dijk added: "Every corner kick we have attacking I get pulled a lot. These days it happens a lot but I told the ref every time before the corner kick or the free kick that he needs to watch [Andrea Ranocchia]. We were unlucky we didn’t get the penalty. But we won the game so it doesn’t matter anymore.’’

Puel hails Southampton’s ‘spirit’ after historic Europa League win

Show/hide article…

Claude Puel hailed his Southampton stars for their spirit in coming from behind to beat Inter Milan last night in a historic Europa League win.

Inter, who won the Champions League six years ago in the same season that Southampton finished seventh in League One, took the lead through Mauro Icardi in the first half.

But a second-half equaliser from Virgin Van Dijk and an own goal by Yuto Nagatomo saw Southampton stay second top in Group K on a momentous night at St Mary’s Stadium.

‘I am happy,’ Puel said. 'It was a very, very good game. We came back wth very good spirit in the second half.

'It was important for our fans to win also because they came for the first game against Inter with 8,000 supporters and it was fantastic.

‘It was important to win this game because all the support is very, very important.’

Man of the match Van Dijk added: ‘The win is the most important thing but it is well deserved. I think we played some good football – we were the dominant side.’

It looked like it was going to be a frustrating night for Southampton after referee Pawel Gil from Poland did not send Antonio Candreva off after an elbow on Sam McQueen.

Dusan Tadic also saw a penalty saved by Inter goalkeeper Samir Handanovic, who pulled off several smart saves to keep Inter in front. Eventually, though, their pressure paid off.

Next up for Southampton in the Europa League is a trip to Sparta Prague later this month.

Stefano Vecchi was named as Inter’s caretaker manager after the sacking of Frank de Boer, and of his first game in charge - overseen by former England manager Roy Hodgson - he said: 'We played excellently in the first half, but in the second you started to see some of our limitations coming out, particularly physically.

'We dropped deeper, and when you do that it can be lethal and that proved to be the case.

‘In the first half we did well when we came under pressure but were caught out in the second half, with lucky ricochets, the ball coming off the crossbar. I can’t fault them whatsoever in terms of their desire.’

Manchester United have one per cent chance of winning Premier League title, says Premier Predictor

Show/hide article…

Manchester United have one per cent chance of winning Premier League title, says Premier Predictor

Manchester United are more likely to be relegated from the Premier League than win it, Sky Sports’ new Premier Predictor has revealed.

Jose Mourinho’s team have just a one per cent chance of winning the Premier League this season, according to the prediction tool, while they have a two per cent chance of being relegated.

According to the Premier Predictor, United have just a 14 per cent probability of reaching the top four - putting them behind Everton in the predicted standings.

United are currently eighth in the table, following a frustrating start to the 2016/17 season.

Mourinho’s side have the fourth-lowest shot conversion rate in the league, while, at the other end of the pitch, they have allowed more shots at their goal than any of the current top five.

The Premier Predictor uses an algorithm to predict results from a range of factors, including previous success, recent form, home advantage, winning margin and schedule.

It’s based on a system originally used to rank chess players, but Sky Sports have tweaked it for use in football.

Teams compete for ranking points - the number of points they win or lose depends on the margin of victory or defeat in each match, the quality of their opposition, and whether they are playing at home or away.

Predictions for matches - and eventual league positions - are then made based on analysis of the relationship between the Premier Predictor rankings and match results in Premier League matches dating back to 1995.

Arsenal are currently favourites to win the Premier League, according to the Premier Predictor, ahead of Manchester City.

With just three points separating first from fifth in the current Premier League table, it’s also tight at the top of the Predictor standings.

But the Gunners’ stronger form last season gives them an edge in the algorithm - which takes into account Spurs’ struggle to cope with the pressure of last season’s title race, City’s limp to the end of Manuel Pellegrini’s reign, and Liverpool finishing outside the European places in eighth in 2015/16.

At the other end of the spectrum, the Predictor has picked out three fairly clear favourites for relegation in Sunderland, Hull and Swansea.

Check out the Premier Predictor table below…

The Premier Predictor also predicts scores on a game-by-game basis, and the predictions for this weekend’s Premier League games are below, with Arsenal tipped to win the north London derby, and United, Leicester, Liverpool and Chelsea also expected to pick up victories…

McQueen delighted but feeling sore after feeling brunt of Candreva’s elbow

Show/hide article…

SAM McQueen hailed a famous night at St Mary’s that pushed Saints towards qualification to the knockout stages of the Europa League.

Claude Puel’s side defeated Italian giants Inter Milan 2-1 thanks to Virgil van Dijk’s strike and an own goal from Yuto Nagatomo, which cancelled out Mauro Icardi’s opener.

“It’s fantastic that it’s in our hands,” said McQueen. “We can win our next two games and then we’re through.

“It’s fantastic for us, it’s a good position to be in but we’ve got some Premier League games to look forward to. Every game is important for us and we just want to do the best in every single game we play.”

McQueen had the displeasure of taking Antonio Candreva’s elbow to the face after running into the box after Saints had won a penalty to stop the Inter man tampering with the spot.

“I saw him [Candreva] do it,” he said. “Some players try and do it these day, they try and dig up the penalty spot.

“I thought that was a silly thing to do so I went over to try and stop it and I felt he gave me an elbow in the jaw.

“I’m an honest player, I didn’t want to go down even though I did drop to my knees a bit.

Puel: Candreva should have seen red for elbow on McQueen

Show/hide article…

Claude Puel insisted Inter Milan’s Antonio Candreva should have been sent off after Sam McQueen claimed the Italian elbowed him during Southampton’s 2-1 Europa League victory.

Unlike McQueen, the Saints boss was adamant he had not seen Inter’s apparent attempts to tamper with the penalty spot before Dusan Tadic’s saved effort, but like his left-back he remained concerned about Candreva’s conduct.

The result had taken Southampton to the brink of the competition’s knockout stages, as well as ensuring a memorable evening against one of the most recognisable names in European football.

Virgil van Dijk’s equalising goal and an own goal from Yuto Nagatomo secured victory after Mauro Icardi had given Inter the lead.

Victory from their trip to Sparta Prague or home fixture with Hapoel Be’er Sheva would guarantee qualification for the Saints.

Puel was thrilled with the way his side fought back to win but felt they could have received more help from the referee.

Candreva was booked in the first half after he appeared to strike McQueen with his forearm shortly after Southampton were awarded a penalty for handball.

When asked if the Italian midfielder should have been given a red card, Puel said: 'Of course. And perhaps also I thought with the first goal Virgil (was fouled).

'It was important for us to come back with calm and quality.

‘In a game that was difficult we can show fantastic character.’

McQueen, who was selected at left-back in place of the rested Ryan Bertrand, clashed with Candreva after accusing the Inter player of trying to scuff up the penalty spot.

McQueen told BT Sport: 'I saw him do it. Some players try and do it these days, they try and dig up the penalty spot.

'I thought that was a silly thing to do so I went over to try and stop it and I felt he gave me an elbow in the jaw. I’m an honest player, I didn’t want to go down even though I did drop to my knees a bit.

‘I’m sure people will laugh at that. I felt there was an elbow so I think we were unlucky they didn’t get a red card.’

Puel: Candreva should have been sent off

Show/hide article…

Claude Puel believes Antonio Candreva should have been sent off for his elbow on Sam McQueen.

The Inter Milan defender clearly caught McQueen clean in the face as the left back attempted to stop him scuffing up the penalty spot before Dusan Tadic could take the kick in first half stoppage time.

Referee Pawel Gil remarkably produced a yellow card, which indicated he had seen the incident and somehow thought it was not worthy of a red.

Puel, who insisted he had not seen Candreva digging up the penalty spot, disagreed with the decision just to book the defender, which was ultimately followed by Tadic having his penalty saved.

He also pointed out the number of incidents when Saints felt hard done by as players were wrestled to the ground in the Inter box, and that he thought Virgil van Dijk may have been fouled in the build-up to Mauro Icardi’s opening goal.

When asked whether Candreva should have been sent off, Puel replied: “I think of course. And perhaps also I thought with the first goal on Virgil also, the first goal against us.

“It was important to see for us in front and to continue this work and to come back in the second half with calm and quality to continue this work and to persist.

“We played tonight a good Inter Milan. It was not the Milan of the first game, it was a good team with quality on the run and good spirit.

“It was a difficult game with a big result and I think it was a high level game and it is important for my players to know this situation.

“In a game that was difficult we can show fantastic character.”

Puel admitted his side relied on their spirit to get them through in the second half.

Having fallen behind to Icardi’s first half strike, and with all the strife just before the break, it need a big response from Saints in the second period, and that is exactly what they produced.

“I am happy of course for all the fans and all the players because we can see a very very good game with a good result and good intensity and with a fantastic scenario,” said Puel.

“It was difficult at the beginning for us and I think we have dominated all the game, all the pitch, and we lost one goal and then also a penalty just before the half time, but we came back with a very good spirit in the second half.

“We did very good work and it is a fantastic result and game also.”
